In my experience, it isn't the difficulty of achieving a mechanic that is difficult, it usually the payoff that's subpar. Hence, we need an actual good card using charge counters.

Aetherworks Marvel is a pretty big payoff.

I don't quite know yet, but I feel like I'm going to draft a lot of this set.

Wabbbit Not big enough. One half of a collected company for a lot of work isn't very good when the card you want to hit- Emrakul- would just be easier and probably more effective to try and hardcast. As for modern, no chance, though I will try it out there for funsies.

Turn 4: Fleetwheel Cruiser

Turn 5: Skysovereign, Consul Flagship

Turn 6: Chandra, Flamecaller

+1 on Chandra to create 2x 3/1 tokens, use them to pilot the Cruiser and Flagship

September 3, 2016 2:50 p.m.

Wabbbit says... #7

@DarkLaw: You could get Ulamog, Emrakul, Kozilek, Decimator. And with the new artifact Energy creator, you could potentially do this turn four. I don't see that as "low" impact. In standard as it is, turn eight Emrakul is probably where you want to be at. Getting six Energy will most likely happen quicker. I think the payoff is big enough to give it a shot.

What does it say?! lol

@greyninja

Territorial Devourer

Trample

Whenever you get one or more energy counters, Territorial Devourer gets +2/+2 and haste until the end of turn

September 3, 2016 3:23 p.m.

Eiti3 says... #11

Although, question of my own. Vehicles, yes they have a P/T, but not the subtype creature. So my only question is if I were to run Vehicles in a creatureless themed deck, would that be iffy to anyone else? I already don't run lands and mana rocks that become dorks...

@Eiti3, oh ok XD

"One or both"

Oh my god, did not see that the first time I read it. This will be amazing in EDH. Copy the Gilded Lotus and the biggest creature on the battlefield for 6 mana, legit.

DarkLaw says... #14

Wabbbit So, I'm going to summarise the work required to get this to happen.

Assuming you have it in your opening hand, we're talking about 6 turns (or 5 turns if you are) lucky) to get your charge counters. You'll need to not be dead by then and not be interacted with in any way in that time. Then you'll want to hope that a big Eldrazi is in your top 6 to get any use out of it. Finally, you have to actually win the game. It's pretty easy to lose or have your creature killed in spite of its effects. All this you have to accomplish with big fatties clogging up your deck.

I'll just take the Temurge deck, thanks.

In fact, I'm not impressed with any of these cards for Standard yet. Maybe some will show up in one deck or another, but we haven't seen a Sylvan Advocate or even a Tireless Tracker yet.

Wabbbit says... #15

@DarkLaw: Wait what? The puzzleknot gets you the Energy you need on turn three.

Wabbbit says... #16

I'm not saying that a deck built around this is going be tier one or anything, but I don't think it's completely crazy to consider the idea.

Demon of Shady Schemes

3BBB

Creature - Demon

Flying

When Demon of Shady Schemes enters the battlefield, all other creatures get -2/-2 until the end of turn.

Whenever another creature dies, gain E (one energy counter).

2B, pay EEEE: Put target creature card from a graveyard onto the battlefiend tapped under your control.

5/5

I wouldn't bank on that being the actual name of the card lol.

September 3, 2016 4:18 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #18

Dammit, I was so excited for that name too.

September 3, 2016 4:45 p.m.

DarkLaw says... #19

The kiddy gloves are off. This Demon's schemes aren't just evil, not just nefarious, they're shady.

But yeah, it really needed to be -N/-3. It may still see EDH play.

Wabbbit That's assuming a lot. It's like the weakest version of a hand with no interaction but the Splinter Twin combo possible. It's like having natural tron but worse.

September 3, 2016 5:15 p.m.

Wabbbit says... #20

None of my comments are based off of modern. I know zero about that format. All I'm saying is that it is possible to get the six energy required to put Aethorworks Marvel online with only two cards.

September 3, 2016 5:19 p.m.

Demon of Shady Schemes seems very close to Massacre Wurm. Flickering him could be really fun.

The set looks like it's going to be awesome to draft. These mechanics work really well together. You can play a fabricate guy, and use the servo to pilot your Sky Skiff while still having a body for blocking their stuff. And then of course someone will get the sweet Start your Engines deck!

Energy seems interesting, but it's hard to tell how powerful it will be as a draft strategy. I like that it gives normally weaker cards a bit more incremental value, and rewards smart resource management. For example, should you spend your 4 energy to kill their guy with Die Young? Or try and save up more counters to dump into your big bomb rare? I think what it really comes down to is will there be enough decent energy enablers at the common/uncommon level to make it worth playing the bigger bombs? Or vice-versa, are the bombs worth all the effort?

The commons/uncommons look solid. Aether Tradewinds seems awesome in a set with this much etb value, bouncing their big guy (or even a land!) and your cheap fabricator (or maybe a Fleetwheel Cruiser?) on their endstep seems like a pretty solid tempo play, and it also doubles as protection from their removal. Filigree Familiar slots into basically any deck and is excellent value, this is almost like an uncommon sad robot. Woodweaver's Puzzleknot is an interesting energy enabler for green, it feels like a new kind of ramp spell. Even weaker cards like Glint-sleeve Artisan feel a lot more interesting, with the flexibility of Fabricate and the now-relevant Dwarf subtype.

With all the tokens and flyers that are going to be around I think this might be red's time to shine. But we'll have to wait and see for what kind of removal they let red have.

Also, the art is beautiful...I feel like I have stepped into Tomorrowland. Definitely refreshing compared to the doom and gloom of Zendikar and Innistrad lately. Wizards hit the ball out of the park with this art. I want one of everything in foil...*drools*

All in all, I'm all aboard the hype train! Wait, maybe hype Skiff?

The more I look at Depala, the more I want to build her.

In fact, I'll do it as an incomplete deck, and add as the set gets spoiled.

Dear lord that Orrey is in-sane. Extra land drop, plus card draw if you go hellbent? Wow. That's just a shoo-in for EDH.

September 3, 2016 6:50 p.m.

Phaetion says... #26

Oh, Malfegor EDH players...feel free to catwhistle at the above card.

September 3, 2016 7:57 p.m.

IZZETannoying says... #27

Oh wow. Now I need to build this shit. Hellbent artifact madness EDH? Fun.

September 3, 2016 7:59 p.m.

Geez that Orrey in a Leovold, Emissary of Trest edh deck would be evil.

September 3, 2016 8:05 p.m.

An arguably superior Titanic Growth. :O

ChaosEngineer says... #30

As someone who identities as an Izzet artificer (in personality and trade) I have never been more excited about a set. When Saheeli was spoiled I about peed myself. This block is going to Murder my bank account.

September 3, 2016 8:46 p.m.

Phaetion says... #31

I wish I knew what I identified as. All I know is a possible color combination or two (Those being URG or RG) and someone who focuses on imagination and creativity. :/

That said, Kaladesh does look interesting so far. Depala's tempting to build, the architect will be good in landfall decks, among other things.

September 3, 2016 8:50 p.m. Edited.

I know I identify as a mana symbol u player. But idk if there should be an additional color or not. Nor do I know what type I am. (Artificer, Control, etc)

Eiti3 says... #34

Well if you all want to figure it out, I know there are multiple facebook-esque quizes out there on the interwebs. All I can say is I'm mana symbol umana symbol b Johnny Vorthos Connoisseur of Knowledge and Immortality. To say any further would delve into my fanfiction stories I've wrote about an ideal planeswalker I would be.

Nonetheless, a little off topic. IN OTHER NEWS.

I don't know why I'm adding this to this chat or why it's relevant but I would love to see a planeswalker be printed that has a mana cost of mana symbol xmana symbol umana symbol r (for my colors, but really any would still be cool) that has "Enters the battlefield with X loyalty counters" and then only had minus abilities and maybe a zero ability. Just think that would be cool.

Oh man, my Brago, King Eternal EDH deck is gonna love Panharmonicon. I'm super pumped for Kaladesh so far

September 3, 2016 9:38 p.m.

DiamondFlavor says... #39

I'm actually kind of irritated that Panharmonicon exists. It seems extremely broken in Commander.

September 3, 2016 9:44 p.m.

Zaueski says... #40

I can't wait for Kaladesh! It cannot come fast enough! Grixis Artifact control will probably be my next deck based on what we have so far, Saheeli Rai is wayyy to good to ignore. Vehicles seem promising, I like their premise mechanically although they'd be much better in a set with Inspired.

September 3, 2016 9:50 p.m.

Wizards has been giving some great support for mana bases recently. Almost any player of any format can at least appreciate that.

enter image description here

September 3, 2016 9:56 p.m.

Panharmonicon is gonna go in my Warp World edh deck! And maybe my Damia, Sage of Stone.

September 3, 2016 10:03 p.m.

Holy shit, panharmonicon!!

It's the Brann Bronzebeard of MTG!!

September 3, 2016 10:09 p.m.

iBleedPunk says... #44

That Panharmonicon is a freaking godsend for my Roon EDH. Definitely needs to find a spot in my deck

September 3, 2016 10:10 p.m.

DiamondFlavor says... #45

The thing about Panharmonicon, at least to my apparently grouchy self, is it's not even cool or special or exciting that it fits into a deck. It will fit into 99% of Commander decks. ETBs are already very, very good in the format. This just makes them all at least twice as good, some of them it just breaks right open.

For every interaction you're thinking of with your deck, every other player at the table is thinking the same thing with theirs. That doesn't seem like good design at all. It's just a big dumb power-up.

September 3, 2016 10:13 p.m.

checkmaster says... #46

Crew would probably be more interesting if Languish and dash weren't phasing out - just dash out a creature, swing with your vehicle, then end the turn with no creatures to Languish.

Also, I knew it wouldn't take much for Bant to survive CoCo phasing out, but did they really need to print something like Rashmi? In a way, she is less powerful than CoCo since kill spells get her, but she also hits non-creatures and can generate more value than CoCo if not killed.

September 3, 2016 10:16 p.m.

checkmaster says... #48

lol, just realized: Panharmonicon + Thought-Knot Seer. Probably not worth much, but as a Dimir-style player who loves shutting my opponent down first, this is quite tempting...

September 3, 2016 10:16 p.m.

Eiti3 says... #49

It is my honest opinion that Panharmonicon would probably get banned for the same reason Prophet of Kruphix got banned. Everyone who can run one will run it, and those who can't will do everything they can to steal it or get rid of it. It will be a main focal point around a many of games. While, this reason might not be enough to have the card banned, I do hope that it will. Not because I hate it. But because I love it. I don't want to see everyone get upset that so-and-so is running Peter Pan because they comboed with an Acidic Slime or Palinchron and whatnot else. I want the card so bad, but I can only see everyone either using or hating the card. And until the day it receives such a ban, if it were ever to come to that, HELLO PETER PAN.

And I think we should call Panharmonicon either Peter Pan or Panhandle. Saying Panharmonicon can ruin any sort of speech pattern people like myself, who can't generally talk correctly. Just like Sakura-Tribe Elder is Steve and so forth.

September 3, 2016 10:22 p.m. Edited.

checkmaster says... #50

@Leviathan102: what about them? Chandra is a too-slow languish, and Outburst still might be too slow. Also, neither helps if you start pulling planeswalkers off Rashmi (Avacyn into Tamiyo jumps out). Also, against board-wipes, the player can choose to simply draw the card instead of playing it. If anything stops Rashmi, it's cards like Murder and the fact that Legendary makes her unlikely as a 4-of (though it might be worth it, as casting a 2nd Rashmi still triggers the ability).
