Khans of Tarkir Speculation

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

So, with M15 out of the way, I'm already ready for Khans of Tarkir. I have been since the launch name was spoiled. I know this isn't really confirmation, ( markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/87368299463/does-khans-of-tarkir-have-anything-in-common-with ) but I've been wanting a wedge set ever since I got into commander, which was about a year ago. I felt like Apocalypse wasn't really fair when the shards got a set like Shards of Alara. Getting to my point, what do you think Khans will hold? I think Sarkhan will be Red or Red White and Black (Dega). Mainly because out of all the Wedges, that seems like the most likely to be Dragon Oriented, also this is just a leap of faith, but usually cards artwork will portray what color it is, and both of the pictures in this link look like Dega cards. So what do you all think?http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/1496

Just out of curiousity....why is almost everyone assuming that Sarkhan is going to be Red/White?? Like seriously, he doesn't have ANY characteristics that makes him white color aligned. Sarkhan is also Jund colored, and for him to have a 4th color, that seems a little far-fetched for me.

Now if anyone has a good reason to say why he might be Red/White, please tell me because there is no way I see that happening to be honest. The only other Red/White planeswalker I can see other than Ajani is Gideon...but that's just my personal opinion.

Odd, last time I looked at a thread about sarkhan vol, everyone thought he would be R/B. I still believe that personally, as we are long due for a R/B planeswalker, it fits his theme of jund, and he just looks like a R/B guy.

JWiley129 says... #4

I'm with RCMetalhead, Sarkhan has zero traits that align himself with White. I think he'll be R/G or R/B, unless they surprise us awake him just straight Jund. And we've got 2 weeks until the MTG panel at SDCC. Let's just be patient and wait until then :)

July 14, 2014 7:18 p.m.

SpaderAce says... #5

He won't be R/G, because we've had 2 R/G in a row but we haven't had any R/B for awhile, or R/W for that matter. I'd hope for R/B or R/W, personally. But from personal opinion based on that picture, I'd say black is more appropriate since he has all the dark colors and he isn't wearing anything to look like a soldier (usually white)

PreZchoICE1 says... #6

I wouldnt be surprised if this sarkhan is the first 5 color walker. Perhaps he has dominion over his whole home plane?

Its almost a guarantee we'll be seeing a bunch of slivers in khans, and possibly a reprint of the tri color legendary dragons from PC/Legends. If that was the case it would lend credence to Sarkhan having access to the whole color pie since he is the master of dragons.

I still think that Mana Confluence will have some greater use, and this could be it.

July 14, 2014 7:44 p.m.

Dreno33 says... #8

I could see Sarkhan being 3 colors, definitely. WoTC just released their second ever 4-ability planes walker. Why not release their second ever 3-color planes walker? We have great lands still (and Mana Confluence ) plus people have been speculating the reprints of some fetches of this next set, you never know. We have the mana base to EASILY do it, let's hope for the best(:

Personally, if he was three colors, I would HOPE they make him a 3-4 cmc JUND colors. I would hope. However the pictures don't seem to resemble green at all. Oh well. If he is 3 colors, I would guess at R/W/B, but that would also make him the first Planeswalker "character" to breach 3 colors. But, you never know.

Usually core sets give you an idea of what is to come, but this core set is all over the place that I have no idea what to expect. I think we may see a soldier subtheme, maybe even a little tribal, because m15 had a few things related to creature types, plus the dragon anthem. Everyone seems to think this is going to be a wedge set, but that seem a little far fetched to me, especially, after a set that really pushes playing one or two color.

July 14, 2014 9:03 p.m.

RCMetalhead says... #10

I still don't understand why some people are saying Sarkhan will be anything white though. He doesn't have ANY characteristics to be white color aligned so I don't know where people are getting this assumption...

DarkHero says... #11

Theres no way they will do a 5 color or 4 color planeswalker anytime before they would do another 3 color, if ever. He would make sense as a jund planeswalker since he already shows up as Sarkhan Vol and Sarkhan the Mad . Odds are he is just going to be R/B again since we are overdue for one, but I'd like to see another strong 3 color along the lines of Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker

July 14, 2014 9:29 p.m.

jonhydude says... #12

Khans of Tarkir will not be a wedge set. Wizards has stated that they will make a multicoloured set every 4 years, and they received a lot of backlash when they made two multicolour sets within 3 years of each other. We had a multicoloured set two years ago, so it Khans will not be multicoloured.

July 14, 2014 9:41 p.m.

DarkHero says... #13

I'm thinking based on M15 and the art teasers that it is going to be a huge throwback to like Kamigawa days and bringing back a lot of different Tribal and artifacts/equipment. Probably including the Bushido ability. It seems like they are taking pages from Skyrim with the whole Dragons used to exist here but they don't anymore thing along with the lone hero with a connection to Dragons that symbolizes their return.

Might even see Ugin as a planeswalker finally. And on that note, even though he is designed to be colorless, he would be interesting as a 5 color planeswalker if he gained dominion over the plane and rose up against Nicol Bolas again even stronger. Although really I can't imagine how you could have a 5 color planeswalker that actually had relevant abilities to being 5 color.

July 14, 2014 9:45 p.m.

There will probably be a huge tribal theme

July 14, 2014 9:57 p.m.

Barbarian tribal v.s. soldier tribal. Calling it now.

In regards to people asking how Sarkhan could have white in some way, Sarkhan started as a soldier on Tarkir. He even made it to the point of being a general. Soldiers are typically white, and if he's returning to his homeworld it might make sense that he would return to his role as a soldier in some way.

Id imagine a 5 color walker would have 5 abilities one for each color. We will be seeing Slivers in this set Im almost sure of it. Host of slivers in m15 and the new sliver land. I definitely agree there will most certainly be a large soldier theme- perhaps even allies...

July 15, 2014 12:07 p.m.

SpaderAce says... #22

I expect to see a lot of graveyard based cards, what with the reprinting of a lot of graveyard hate when Dredge isn't really very prominent right now. So that could be a reason for speculating a wedge, because Junk could be a thing. Plus Junk would do well against MBD, and doesn't Wizards try to balance the meta with new cards?

July 15, 2014 12:16 p.m.

kintighd says... #23

There really isn't a need to balance MBD since it is losing a lot of key cards when rtr rotates out.

July 15, 2014 12:20 p.m.

SpaderAce says... #24

True, but my reasoning stands that graveyard oriented will be a thing again with the hate being reprinted

July 15, 2014 12:22 p.m.

jr92_2000 says... #25

I don't see any reason to expect slivers. Tribal, yes (Soldiers, Dragons, Goblins being the best bets), but the sliver cards from M15 seem like they were made to compliment the M14 ones.

July 15, 2014 1:42 p.m.

PreZchoICE1 says... #26

I just cant see them putting a land in that is specifically for slivers without having the creature type returning sometime soon.

July 15, 2014 3:43 p.m.

lothshteth says... #27

Why not its a core set? All those slivers are Shandalar slivers anyway with the exception of the hive. I guess the bipedal slivers could exist on other planes too, but I doubt WOTC wants to spread them out like that. What I really like is the hive showing Dominarian silvers. Crossing fingers for a return to mecca.

July 15, 2014 4:44 p.m.

OmegaAura113 says... #28

This is really far fetched but what if the five color planeswalker IS a sliver? It would be very cool to have a sliver-walker, especially a five color one. What do you guys think?

TheRedDude says... #29

Not sure theres gonna be many dragons. (no I'm not being sarcastic)

July 16, 2014 3:32 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #30

It won't happen, but it just occured to me that it would be awesome if they re-printed Bolas, and then completed the cycle with PW incarnations of the other four Elder Dragons (since as creatures, they're virtually unplayable)

July 16, 2014 3:49 p.m.

SpaderAce says... #31

Dude that would be awesome and might make sense cause there are supposed to be dragons in this set.... Apparently there's "something returning and something totally new." What if that meant those dragons, but the new part is that they're planeswalkers? :O It might make sense why Garruk, Apex Predator has that "destroy planeswalker", because planeswalkers are gonna be big this time around.... It's possible

July 16, 2014 3:53 p.m.

Except that the other elder dragons are dead.

Well, one is unknown, but likely dead.

July 16, 2014 3:55 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #33

This is Magic - things undie with relative frequency. Especially if an insane planeswalker were to resurrect the elder dragon to bring dragonkind back to Tarkir.

Sarkhan bout to raise some dragons and unwittingly loose a horde of slivers

July 16, 2014 6:01 p.m.

Stemii says... #40

Soldiers are not "typically white". Red as well as black have had a cubic butt load of soldiers. "Soldiers" will definitely be a thing. Bushido is far to obscure to be able to fit into another block. Both Tribal and Banding are high possibilities.

Sarkhan will almost certainly be red. Whether or not he has a compliment color is still in question. The colors in need of serious power pushes are mostly red and green, but with Ravnica on its way out all of that can shift. Blue and Black will take major hits in power level after Ravnica rotates so they will definitely be addressed in some fashion by the end of the block, but definitely red and white mages will see their time to shine at the beginning of rotation as they will have the highest level of power.

July 16, 2014 8:36 p.m.

kintighd says... #41

I don't think we will ever see banding return, because even people that have been playing magic for years have trouble understanding how it works.

It's not really hard to understand, it just takes up too much reminder text much like phasing. That's why regeneration is slowly being taken out of favor. Trample would be another candidate, but its too much fun and fans love it.

Tribal wouldn't be used on class types only race types. Sorry soldier lovers.

Bushido is tied to Kamigawa so it's not going to happen.

If anything it would be flanking, horsemanship, or rampage, but they will probably just make new keywords instead of rehashing old stuff.

July 16, 2014 9:58 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #44

Flanking and Horsemanship both seem like shoe in candidates for another day in the sun.

The flavor of this block is supposed to resemble the Huns. Their greatest strengths were their numbers, their horses, and their skill in archery. I wouldn't be surprised to see Barbarian, Soldier, and Archer creature types.

When can we expect ANY spoilers?

July 16, 2014 10:11 p.m.

RCMetalhead says... #46

@SpaderAce: Usually Wizards gives us spoilers like a month before the set comes out. Maybe after a few weeks of M15 Wizards might give us 1 or 2 card spoilers before they actually do their typical spoilers. This is just my guess so take it with a grain of salt.

July 17, 2014 2:38 p.m.

I believe they said that we are going to receive some information at the San Diego Comic Con. I imagine we will get 1 or 2 cards, some story information, or a little information on a mechanic or two.
