Kiora, Master of the Sea

If you read the latest UR, it was about Kiora vs Thassa. Thassas about to kill Kiora, but then Kiora grabs Thassas bident and planeswalks away-taking the bident.
So now, Kiora can command the seas of Zendikar against the Eldrazi. Aw yeah.

Well, I think that spoiling the entirety of the article in the OP before you even post the link to it is a little... rude, but thanks, I think, for the link.

He may not have put "SPOILER ALERT" in big flashing letters, but he did say he was talking about Uncharted Realms. You could've stopped there. Also, it's just an article it's not like a book or a movie. Not much to spoil.
But anyway this makes Kiora sound like an OG. Maybe she'll be back in BFZ? That set is shaping up to have lots of returning faces.

Actually, not to put too fine a point on it, one had no idea what the topic was about until clicking on it, at which point, it was too late. And pardon me, I am aware it is just an article, and not a book or movie, but that doesn't detract from the essence that it was a spoiler of a continuing storyline. To say something like that is just dismissive of the people who actively follow these things, akin to the people who don't like spoilers for episodes of Game of Thrones.

Methinks that anyone who actively follows these things would have already read the article already, but now we're just getting into semantics. Point is it's really not as big of a deal as you're making it. Should he have included a spoiler warning? Probably. Does it really matter? No.
Back on topic though, I'm excited for Kiora's next card. Her current one was fun but kinda underwhelming, I'm interested to see where they take her from here.

First off, probably lore, but I don't really care.
Second of all, that was sweet. I seriously hope that the two face off again one day, because Kiora could easily beat that arrogant b****
May 20, 2015 6:43 p.m.
FAMOUSWATERMELON Calling Thassa an arrogant bitch when Kiora was just as arrogant, if not more so, and lost is a bit odd.
That being said, i'm not super disappointed that we never got a card of Arixmethes. "At least as big as Kozilek", "made the other kraken of the plane look like minnows" and "Big enough to eat a 100 foot kraken in one bite". Like, holy shit, that would have been cool. What a wasted opportunity.

Well I can't really talk there because I don't know much lore, but in this episode, Thassa was clearly more overconfident and more arrogant.
May 20, 2015 6:55 p.m.
I mean Kiora was under the assumption that all mtg "gods" were fake cuz of Koz, Em and Uli being described in lore as gods. So she was like, "thassa ain't shit dawg I got dis bea". And then Thassa was like "sit the fuck down" and kicked Kiora's ass.
It's not arrogance if you actually are that powerful, and it clearly showed that Kiora got her ass handed to her.
Yea she snuck off with Thassa's bident, but that's not really beating Thassa. At all, really.
This isn't to say the confrontation wasn't a win for Kiora, cuz she was looking for a kickass wep and got one, but she didn't win the fight.

That's one way to look at it. But the thing is, Thassa should never, ever have given Kiora a single chance. She had everything going her way, but she was way too overconfident and f***ed up when she clearly had the upper hand.
May 20, 2015 7:41 p.m.
Well... Kiora was winning at one point during the fight. She even said so herself. She just miscalculated when she thought she'd be able to take control of Arixmethes easier than she actually could, and that wavering in concentration was what allowed Thassa to take control of the leviathan Kiora was riding and make it attack the spectator merfolk.
It seemed me like that was the real turning point of the fight. Since gods Theros are just belief given form, turning the merfolk against Kiora was probably what gave Thassa the power to take control of all the sea creatures on Kiora's side. It also seemed to me like Kiora was just horrified that Thassa would kill her own Tritons and it wrecked her concentration.
All and all, I'm pretty sure this was the most epic fight involving a planeswalker that we've seen since pre-mending days. I think wizards got the message that just because 'walkers are less powerful it doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to kick ass. (The story with Sorin was a good start, but I'm glad they went all out here.) Also after this story Kiora is my new favorite character I just love how clever and upbeat she is all the time.
May 20, 2015 11:29 p.m.
Oh, and FAMOUSWATERMELON. You can't really say that Thassa fucked up because she couldn't possibly have known that Kiora could just melt out of the world. Pretty much all the gods on Theros except Kruphix can't really comprehend what a Planeswalker is. Heliod had the same problem with Elspeth and Xenagos. It's just beyond the scope of their experience.

This is the kind of story that would probably make the biggest, scariest, most awesome battle if they made it into a 10 minute trailer. I mean..it's a Godhunter Octopus. So we're talking huuuuuuge creatures! Huge creatures chomping on killer-whale sized fish as if they were a carrots! Godzilla would crap himself if he saw this lol.
Not to mention that Kiora has creatures from multiple worlds, some of which surely have very different biology unlike anything we've ever seen. After reading this I just can't be as impressed by the cute lil sea otters at the aquarium nearby. I mean it's not like they can kill a god. Harrumph!
Those peeps who did Avatar? Yeah, lets get them do make this but without any stupid blue/orange/whatever color filters applied.

This story SHOULD have been a movie. It was that epic. I don't care if it's only 10-30 minutes, I'd pay $20 just to see it.
From what I see though, Thassa won the battle, but she lost the war. With her bident gone, I doubt Thassa would be able to control the seas again.
As for Kiora, maybe she'd slam Eldrazi-sized tidal waves at Ulamog & co? It's clearly up for speculation at this point, though I will say that since the pattern of the articles are characters related to Zendikar, we're getting Sorin next, and we will FINALLY know what happened to Nahiri.

Let's not forget about the clueless Nissa, which is out there looking for Sorin. I'm expecting her to appear in BFZ as well.
May 23, 2015 4:53 a.m.
...Except we kind of already have seen Nissa's deal last year (when she was spoiled for M15). I expect to see her tag along with Gideon in BFZ. In the meantime, we WILL see her in Origins. Otherwise that's a little too much Nissa coverage, don't you think?

Woo! Kiora comeback! I hope (if there be one) that the new card will kick a**!
May 23, 2015 12:16 p.m.
"Magic Origins focuses on five Planeswalker characters: Gideon Jura, Jace Beleren, Liliana Vess, Chandra Nalaar, and Nissa Revane. We chose these five Planeswalkers because they will all take a central role in Magic's story in the near future. We felt it was important to go back and explore their origins, to see the tales of what made them who they are, so their motivations and life histories will be known before launching into the next phase of the storyline."

Seems to me that Nissa's all but confirmed for BFZ as well.

It seems to me that Kiora is at a massive loss after her battle with Thassa because most of the giant sea monsters she'd assembled for the battle were lost, either to Arixmethes or Thassa herself, and so she doesn't have the weapons she knows for the fight with the Eldrazi. I'm expecting to see her either go back to take on Thassa for a round 2 in the hopes of claiming Arixmethes and/or her other creatures, or she's got to promptly grasp the power of a God, which I'm quite sure won't be as easy as picking up their weapon, especially when she's not even on it's native plain.

@AnJaFrIv, Thassa's bident is a manifestation of her ability to control the all the seas of Theros. It doesn't really lose it's power on other planes; it just loses the angry goddess who wants it back. Since Kiora has it she'll likely be able to control every leviathan on Zendikar, and will probably be able to summon leviathans from every plane she hops to along the way. She is never bothering Thassa again...
