KTK Block - Duel Deck speculation

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Posted on March 11, 2015, 10:42 a.m. by Rayenous

So, with all the Planeswalkers of the Block revealed, I'm trying to figure out who will be in the Duel decks.

Sarkhan vs. Sarkhan...?
Narset vs. Sorin...?
Sarkhan vs. Ugin...?

I suppose there are a few more "Uncharted Realms" articles to come before then, so we may get better insight. - But at this point, I don't see enough conflict to warrant a Planeswalker Dual Deck. - Perhaps they will do Duel decks of Dragons instead...?

Khans vs Dragons would certainly be a good deck, i suspect that we will have a Sarkhan in the duel deck and he may well go up against himself,

Ugin vs Nicol Bolas, and the duel deck is where they're going to release the new Bolas card.

Ugin vs Nicol Bolas, or Khans vs Dragons are most likely I think.

Have there been any Planeswalker Duel decks where the Planeswalker(s) were not from the Block? ... I don't See Ugin v.s Bolas as viable.

I could see Khans Vs. Dragons, but since the Block has already had a non-Plansewalker duel deck (Speed vs. Cunning), I'm not viewing it as likely either... especially since it would mean 2x 5-color decks.

Has a new Bolas card been confirmed.. or even hinted at? I would find it hard to believe a Ugin vs Bolas duel deck would be released, as the secondary market of those two cards alone would be over 5x the cost of the average duel deck. Sure, they could up-price the duel deck, but that's also unlikely as that product is specifically marketed at entry level MTG players.

Yes, i know there is a very entrenched argument that WofC doesn't care about secondary markets. They do. As someone who works in business/finance, they would be idiots not to.

It'lll be Khans vs Dragons, and they will put Tasigur in there to give some more supply for Modern.

I imagine it would be pretty hard to execute it well, but a Khans-timeline Sarkhan vs Dragons-timeline Sarkhan would be pretty cool conceptually.

Why not Sorin vs Ugin?

March 11, 2015 11:59 a.m.

DrFunk27 because Ugin never had beef with Sorin. Hell, Sorin and Ugin were teammates on Zendikar. So why pit them against each other?

And in the art for Haven of the Spirit Dragon it looks like Sorin is releasing Ugin or at least helping him

They put Elspeth vs Kiora.... Because that makes sense.

I could see Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker vs Narset Transcendent, or maybe even Sarkhan Unbroken vs Sorin, Solemn Visitor. Either would be fine imo. I just don't see them putting Ugin, the Spirit Dragon in a Duel Deck.

It was something like Kiora summoned a giant kraken and almost took out a city that Elspeth was in at the time, so she got pissy.

Narset vs ugin?

March 11, 2015 12:25 p.m.

Rayenous says... #16

I have a feeling that we'll see Sorin attempting to open Ugin's Crucible, and either Narset or Sarkhan trying to stop him (afraid that disrupting his slumber may be detrimental).

Thus leasing to Sorin, Solemn Visitor vs. Sarkhan Unbroken or,
Sorin, Solemn Visitor vs. Narset, Transcendant

Sarkhan vs himself won't happen as it needs to have flavor and a person can't be duelling himself.

WOTC has been alternating between planeswalkers and a scenario match-up for duel decks. We just had Elspeth vs Kiora, so the next deck should be a scenario, likely Khans vs Dragonlords or whatever

Guys, guys... Bolas VS Sarkhan. The old whisper slave VS his master... if another Bolas comes out.

cosmokai2000 - That is true, the duel deck right before BFZ will be a scenario duel deck. It will usually contain some number of preview cards for the fall set, and will relate to it in some way. I could very well see the Fall DD being Allies vs Eldrazi.

What we are talking about is the SPRING DD which has a planeswalker focus. Also, now that I think about it, Sorin, Solemn Visitor vs Narset Transcendent wouldn't be a bad choice for a DD.

Anything but Dragons versus Khans would surprise me a lot.

I'm thinking khans vs dragonlords, but Bolas vs Sarkhan would be interesting. I don't think they'd really HAVE to print a new bolas, they use reprints sometimes, ie: Arcanis the Omnipotent

Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker vs. Sarkhan Unbroken would make me happy, but I don't see it happening. In truth, I don't see them using Sarkhan Unbroken at all because that would require 2 tri-color duel decks in a row, which is an idea I can't see Wizards touching.

Given that he's had four different cards at this point, I'd think that a Sarkhan duel deck would be appropriate, but I can't see a working color distribution. My bet would be Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker vs. Narset Transcendent, except that it's the same colors as Venser vs. Koth. Alternatively they could pair Sorin with a mono-red planeswalker...again. An Ugin, the Spirit Dragon deck would be interesting for sure (colorless, anyone?), but I'm not at all confident Wizards would choose to execute it and the virtually required inclusion of Ghostfire makes Sarkhan vs. Ugin come too close to Red vs. Red (and red is by far the most prevalent color in duel decks to date at that).

As disappointed as I am to say it, I'm going to place my bet on Sorin, Solemn Visitor vs. Narset Transcendent. It seems to be the only way to create a fitting color distribution between the two decks.
