Let's talk un-sets, shall we?

Disclaimer: MaRo has said that another actual un-set being made is not a matter of "if", but "when" (source). Please stay on topic guys :) Thanks!

Okay, so I'm not sure how familiar everyone is, but if you don't know what an un-set is, here's a handy link to great information about them: Information (just click on the two sets in the category).

So if you were to look back in the past, some cards were actually inspired by unglued/unhinged cards, and some were even functional reprints!

For example, Nevermore was inspired by Look at Me, I'm the DCI (source), and Barren Glory is a functional reprint of The Cheese Stands Alone. So my question is two-fold:

  • What other cards seem to be inspired by or functional reprints of un-set cards?

  • What cards would you like to see turned into real cards?

You're not asking the big question: When will the next Un-set be?

You want talk about un cards that made it to real cards:

Infernal Spawn of Evil spawned (hehe) the original azorius mechanic, Forecast, as seen on Writ of Passage.

Cards that force the opponent to actually do something outside the battlefield (yeah..no idea what, but it would be new) like Ashnod's Coupon

Isn't dash just a functional wording of the unset ability super haste?

Boza says... #8

Yes, VA, I saw that on Maro's blog, but it was more inspired by Viashino Sandstalker.

Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug inspired the pact cycle, like Pact of Negation

I'd be saddened to see any of the old Un-cards printed in a new Un-set. I'd hope that Wiz has enough creativity to make a whole new slew of jokes based on Mtg culture at this point.

@Frayace

"Super Haste" may have also inspired "Dash".

Compare: Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug --> Mardu Scout

... I suppose I could have read earlier comments before posting that. - Other people seem to have covered that concept.

Oh, I didn't mean reprint in another unset, I meant Functional reprint in a real set.

I always kind of thought Hot Soup was meant for an UN set that just snuck out into the wild

The Will of the Council ability was an unused idea for one of the Un sets.

jandrobard says... #19

@MagicalHacker In that case, Meddling Kids was inspired by Meddling Mage.

Also, Gleemax could be a planeswalker's ult, which came first, Mirror Universe or Mirror Mirror, is Booby Trap actually Letter Bomb, and how could Urza's Contact Lenses be made to NOT be broken?

MagicalHacker says... #21

Oh my bad. :/ so many cards seem similar but I just don't know which came first ><

Staying Power, and Johnny, Combo Player would be interesting as real cards. Also, Elvish Piper was inspired by Timmy, Power Gamer

March 19, 2015 11:15 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #23

Yeah Staying Power could simply be done Eon Hub-style and be "Players skip their end steps."

March 20, 2015 12:13 a.m.

MagicalHacker says... #24

Also, is Johnny, Combo Player actually Planar Portal? They seem like perfect versions of the same card. And maybe Timmy is Quicksilver Amulet?
