Magic Origins and Battle for Zendikar Mechanic Speculation

Hello everyone.

We've already seen the new Liliana from Magic Origins. She's a werewolf, and we're assuming that all of the Origins planeswalkers do that. BUT we heard in the spotlight that there would be 2 new mechanics in Origins. And we don't even know about BfZ. What do you guys think?

It is confirmed that the only double-faced cards in Magic Origins are the Planeswalkers, so it's not a DFC mechanic in Origins. I bet one of the mechanics is like the "Dragon Clause" in DTK where if you control a planeswalker you get a bonus effect.

As far as BFZ is concerned, I doubt Annihilator will return since it has been deemed un-fun. However I will bet large sums of money that Landfall will be back, because there will be riots if Landfall isn't back in Zendikar.

Wotc already said that they would never bring Annihilator back.

land fall now will be ridiculous itll be fetches and land fall and hopefully the zen fetches would they do all 10 fetches in standard at once?

Steppe Lynxes everywhere. EVERYWHERE.

Also Blood Moon prices would go through the roof.

I'm gonna brew that right now.

It would be nice if they brought landfall back in bfz. Ally creatures or something similar might also return to represent unity in fighting the eldrazi or if the situation is more desperate maybe some sort of champion mechanic like in lorwyn where a weak creature will gain the strength to fight the eldrazi. In terms of origins maybe we will see the return of another original ravnica block mechanic like we did in m15 with convoke or as its origins maybe we will get to see the return of something like banding or buy back from the literal origins of magic or quite a few reprints of older cards and mechanics like we saw in the time spiral block.

edit maybe see the return of another original ravnica block mechanic.

The main thing that would get in the way of a "planeswalkers matter" mechanic though is that a mechanic like that would be useless in limited since wotc only prints walkers at mythic rare. The reason it could work in khans was that there were dragons in the set at the common/uncommon level.

We might see cards with text like "whenever a card is transformed" or possibly "if you control a transformed permanent", since that could in theory have support at the common/uncommon level.

They already announced somewhere that the planeswalkers are the only double sided cards. I know this sounds strange, but maybe banding for the core set. The last core set uses the first core sets now unused keyword...

OtakulordAndrew The problem with bringing back allies is that, if I'm not being a complete idiot, the Eldrazi split up. I believe Koz or Ulamog is on Zendikar, and the other 2 are wandering through the Blind Eternities. Allies wouldn't really make sense in that scenario. Or maybe it would! What do y'all think?

April 3, 2015 8:13 a.m.

I haven't heard any definitive answer on where the eldrazi are at the moment but even if only one of the eldrazi titans is still on zendikar then I assume his brood of spawn would be there as well that's probably enough of a threat to reason a battle and working together to stop the eldrazi. As the eldrazi are inspired by the cthulhu mythos maybe we will see some sort of new mechanic centered around that to replace annihilator.

I thought that Emrakul was the only Eldrazi Titan that left the plane and that Kozilek and Ulamog are still there.

I can see BfZ having a destruction them, so gravestorm (Bitter Ordeal), and persist could be reintroduced.

jchudz says... #19

Hmm, gravestorm could be interesting I guess, although it doesn't look like it could have that much design capabilities. Maybe threshold would be a better fit? There haven't been any threshold cards for a good while and there are a lot of design possibilities for it.

I can't wait for Zendikar. The original was one of my favorites for standard.

Here's an interesting mechanic for BFZ:

This would probably go on eldrazi, but it's when its casted, target land now only produces colorless mana, as if all of the mana was eaten.

You guys, what if we had annihilate. Not to be confused with annihilator, annihilate is an etb version of annihilator. For exampleUlamog, bla bla, bla 10Creature- EldraziAnnihilate 3 (when ulamog enters the battlefield, target player sacrifices 3 permanents)10/10

April 7, 2015 10:55 p.m.

jchudz says... #24

I suppose that if they put the sacrifice effect on cast or etb, it would be more manageable sonc3 it's not happening every turn.

nobu_the_bard says... #25

Going to say one or the other is a fixed version of something obsolete, like banding was mentioned. You know, Icatian Javelineers got a reprint recently, with some gorgeous artwork. They've certainly been looking at those guys... Maybe something like a reworked Icatian Skirmishers? Benalish Hero?

I think they've already done a "fixed" Rampage with Bushido, though.

jchudz

It's extremely unlikely that they'll have a mechanic like 'when X transforms, do Y', since the planeswalkers in Origins never actually transform. They're exiled and then ETB on their transformed side.
