Personaly, i think nissa is way too slow.

Jaces -3 is amazing, the rest is bad.

Chandra seems really good in burn decks, but nothing else.

Thoughts?

ChiefBell says... #2

They're all fairly bad except liliana.

Jace is easy to flip but does little. For two mana he's good though. In overall terms I still dont think hes worth it.

Chandra is hard to flip. Nissa is hard to flip.

You know, we do have a spoiler thread for a reason XD

this is in the spoiler thread

Jace I actually like for his non-planeswalker version. Drawing/Discarding on T3 is real sweet, especially in something like delver. And he can also stop attackers or whatevs.

ChiefBell:

In my opinion, liliana is amazing, jace might see some standard play in delve/sidisi whip decks, but wont see any non standard play. Mono Blue EDH maybe..., chandra will see no standard play, but could be good for modern burn with 1-drop spells like Lightning Bolt and Lava Spike to easily uptap her. Nissa is way too slow for any format. I'd take Nissa, Worldwaker over her any day.

June 14, 2015 10:24 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #7

I like chandra for tiny leaders. I'm not sure about regular commander though.

Good to see a bad jace. Jace can stay bad for all i care.

Nissa annoys me on a flavor perspective. She comes from on elf centric place with elf centric ideals but now they went and rewrote everything about her because "lands"

June 14, 2015 10:34 a.m.

Mmmmmm shit-tacular.

June 14, 2015 10:40 a.m.

2gherkins says... #9

Liliana is really good, definitely strong.

Jace will see delver play (hopefully), FAMOUSWATERMELON, but to slow for mill.

Chandra is fun in tiny leaders, maybe RDW?

Nissa is just horrible though

June 14, 2015 10:46 a.m.

8vomit says... #10

there all pretty mediocre. I think i actually like nissa the best out of the 3, but shes way slow. They knew lili was gunna be the best one, thats why thy spoiled her first.

June 14, 2015 11 a.m.

Justin_Bop says... #11

Liliana is pretty much the only playable one so far. The other ones are either way too slow or they just suck, as their power levels just aren't high enough to be competitive (like Liliana of the Veil). They obviously did this on purpose, so hopefully they make some really good Cycles or some way to make the walkers better. Right now I am not very excited about origins, except the story.

June 14, 2015 11:05 a.m.

HolyFalcon says... #12

ChiefBell: Chandra's not that hard to flip. T3 cast her, T4 attack, main 2 cast a burn spell and then use Chandra's ability. Boom, flipped. Only problem is she dies to soooo much removal.

These flipwalkers are gonna be a pain in my playgroup. Half the kids don't use sleeves -shudders- and they probably don't know about the checklist cards. Better carry an ample supply of checklists with me at all times.

June 14, 2015 11:11 a.m.

vishnarg says... #13

Jace is very easy to flip. If his +1 did anything at all he would definitely see some modern play, but alas he doesn't do enough. I love Nissa for EDH and probably some standard lists but she'll never make modern either. I don't see Chandra getting played in very many decks, probably the worst of them all to be honest. And Lilliana is really good, basically a super LotV once she flips. If any of them are going to make modern play, it's gonna be Lili, but I'm not sure where.

June 14, 2015 11:12 a.m.

kyuuri117 says... #14

Jace's +1 is very reminiscent of Architect's +1. With the right build, he's gonna be fine. And a 0/2 looter for 2 is meh in eternal, but great in standard.

Nissa isn't too slow. It depends on if there's a green mana sink in the format. 7 mana is super easy to get to in a midrange deck, and her walker side is a great way to pull ahead quickly in a midrange mirror. And if we have landfall in BFZ, she's gonna be fantastic.

Chandra blows.

June 14, 2015 11:58 a.m. Edited.

Does anyone but me see that this is kind of accurate to be honest? They're all underpowered for the reason of they're just now becoming 'Walkers and realizing their potential. Well, except Liliana because, reasons I guess.

June 14, 2015 11:59 a.m.

Chubbub says... #16

I think jace is good in standard because he's very easy to flip, and 6 loyalty turn 3 or 4 is very good in standard. He is also the best non-walker of all of them. I think he isn't impactful enough for modern or legacy. I think nissa is playable in standard, but not amazing. The earliest she could reliably flip is turn 5 if you had another ramp source, and her abilities aren't particularly exciting for standard. Chandra just straight up sucks. Liliana has the most raw power, but the hardest to flip. Your opponent will always kill her before they kill your other creatures, and she dies to every played removal spell. For her to see play there needs to be a way to sac another creature, but there are currently no spells that require their owner to sacrifice a creature that see play in modern. The only one in standard are sidisi and merciless executioner.

June 14, 2015 12:14 p.m.

(And all the exploit cards)

June 14, 2015 12:15 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #18

Exploit goes on the stack and lili can be killed in response with no trigger.

That said, I think with all the delve cards, jace will be super versatile. If you want raw draw power to find something, you can delve to keep him a looter. Otherwise, you can flip him to stop incoming damage or flash back a board wipe or kill spell or whatever.

June 14, 2015 12:18 p.m.

Chubbub says... #19

FAMOUSWATERMELON I know there are all the exploit cards, but the only one that has seen any play is sidisi.

June 14, 2015 12:19 p.m.

Not at all. A bunch of exploit cards see play in Sultai decks.

June 14, 2015 12:21 p.m.

Chubbub says... #21

FAMOUSWATERMELON, I'm taking about competitive standard decks. Not a limited deck. Or a bad standard deck.

June 14, 2015 12:23 p.m.

So am I :) Sutai whip is still a thing. Sultai toolbox I believe is a thing. Trust me, exploit cards see play XD

June 14, 2015 12:24 p.m.

Chubbub says... #23

I can't find any decks using any competitive decks with good results using exploit creatures other than Sidisi, Undead Vizier. Would you mind linking one or two? As a side note I did realize that I forgot about Butcher of the Horde which is actually excellent with liliana.

June 14, 2015 12:29 p.m.

I remember seeing one or two in a tournament, but I can't find them XD Regardless, it doesn't really matter, since with Lili they're likely to see more play anyways.

June 14, 2015 12:33 p.m.

Chubbub says... #25

FAMOUSWATERMELON, very true. I agree that lili is worth it to play some of the worse exploit cards.

June 14, 2015 12:35 p.m.

SimicPower says... #26

Another two mana walker! Tibalt has a friend!

From an EDH perspective, there is nothing special here. Oh well.

June 14, 2015 12:52 p.m.

JakeHarlow says... #27

Eh. These walkers aren't anything to get excited about.

June 14, 2015 1:11 p.m.

RoarMaster says... #28

Whole set seems pretty damn 'Blah'...

June 14, 2015 1:27 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #29

We've seen an amazing amount of about 30 cards, most of then commons and uncommons. Of course they're going to be underwhelming.

June 14, 2015 1:30 p.m. Edited.

I would object to that RoarMaster. Just the fact that we have more flip-walkers is something to be exited about. It's not so much how good they are, but more like the flavor, which some walkers are oozing with. And there are a couple of spells that seem pretty nice. I mean, core sets are never that awesome.

June 14, 2015 1:31 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #31

Mizzium Meddler seems fantastic. If you haven't seen it, it's 2U, 1/4, with flash. "When this card enters the battlefield, you may switch target spell to this card".

June 14, 2015 1:39 p.m. Edited.

Jace can essentially give flashback? That has potential. His flip is tied to his activated ability yeah? Looks like it at least. If they give us Thoughtscour back he'll flip quite quickly. Hell, even without it he could if you hit enough fetches. But that -3.... Having something like that come back to standard sounds great. Not as good as snapcaster but snappy is just broken so close enough.

Nissa needs Rampant Growth type effects but we are about to go back to Zendikar, so that could work. And her +1 is great- ramp or draw a card, in green. Think about that, seriously. They're purposely giving green flat out card advantage, which could work great with Courser while the two are still together. So we're helping green Go Bigger, knowing fully well we'll be at seven lands before that starts. If the eldrazi in bfz are any good this could be a gameplan already. I get she's not JtMS or LotV but in a very midrangey standard you don't think she could just be gross?

Chandra looks like she's worth trying out. She's a shock every turn after you flip her, which isn't bad really, just a different angle of attack.

Have they 100% stated how Moonmist will work with them?

CuteSnail says... #34

I kinda like have. It could see play in TL and edh.

June 14, 2015 1:55 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #35

FreddyFlash311 Honestly? I seriously doubt they even took Moonmist into consideration at all when they designed the walkers. The way it's worded, yes, they would flip into walkers, as the walkers themselves have the word "transform" on them.

June 14, 2015 2:02 p.m.

LordOfDispair says... #36

Liliana is okay, a bit hard to trigger, but the -x is really good.

Jace is good, at worst he's a Merfolk Looter which is not bad, he's the easiest to trigger out of all of them, and he starts at 5 counters and can have a Snapcaster Mage effect the turn flips.

The chandra and nissa are both very bad and unplayable in almost every format.

June 14, 2015 2:05 p.m.

jchudz says... #37

Moonmist isn't going to work with the flip walkers because walkers only get loyalty counters when they enter the battlefiled, and transforming doesn't cause them to leave/reenter the battlefied.

mizzium meddler looks to be a pretty amazing way to hate on Splinter Twin and is actually a bit of a combo with it since you can keep redirecting spells to the token copies over the course of the game.

The formatting guide below the comment box will tell you how. Just look for the section on how to hyperlink.

Basically though;

I really have no idea how to evaluate these flip walkers. Liliana strikes me as the most powerful. Nissa replaces herself and could possibly be used as a 4 of because of chump blocking in a ramp strategy.

June 14, 2015 2:38 p.m.

CheeseBro says... #42

so like this for jace:

This is Jace

JWiley129 says... #43

VampireArmy - They did that because the "Elf Planeswalker" is too narrow of a design space. That and Nissa Revane did not go over very well.

June 14, 2015 3:23 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #44

Im fine with it ona game stand point. Strictly on flavor i got annoyed

June 14, 2015 3:32 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #45

I would dare to say that Nissa Revane was worse than tibalt.

June 14, 2015 3:32 p.m.

MindAblaze says... #46

kyuuri117

I disagree. Nissa's very powerful in the deck she fits in, which happens to be, arguably, the most supported tribe out there. Tibalt fits in a narrow Madness deck, and could easily be replaced with something that's non-random.

June 14, 2015 3:40 p.m.

I am more interested in Mizzium Meddler.

June 14, 2015 3:57 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #48

AbzanFTW, they're apparently leaks for the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) promo versions of these cards. WotC has been releasing these rare printings for the last year or two.

June 14, 2015 10:39 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #49

I think you mean other three, because Gideon remains the only flipwalker to be revealed.

June 14, 2015 10:49 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #50

anybody notice though that with Chandra, you can use Fall of the Hammer to flip her? her text only says if she's done 3 damage period, not 3 to a player, just period. so use Fall to do her 2 power to anything, then use her ability and boom, planeswalker side. probably not really a big deal, but just pointing it out.
