MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!
TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

How are fetching a card from your SB and gideon pumping things connected in any way? Also, historically, gideon has never had an ability that pumps creatures, he fights on his own.
A wish speculation is out of the question as this is an area of the game wizards have not touched in more than 10 years, since it is deemed too dangerous to trifle with and can be easily mismanaged for a marginal gain for the game.

You can flip Chandra by swinging with her (attacking for 2), then casting a spell to untap her and then tapping her to ping one. The 3 damage she needs to do to flip doesn't have to be from her tap ability - it can be from combat. I missed this when I first read her but someone pointed it out.
Also with the mechanic 'spell mastery' we are almost certainly going to see some burn spells that are very good for standard. I don't know about modern but as far as standard is concerned I can see some potential.

Now that Chandra thing is a bit more to the point.
I am hesitant to declare chandra the goddess of standard burn (she is too lackluster in every other format). However, depending on the support, there might be an aggro/burn deck centered around her, but it would require a lot of 1 mana burn spells to do it and 1 mana burn spells are not what WIzards have been doing in the years as evidenced by Lightning Strike.
IN short, aggressive deck with Chandra is possible, straight up burn is very unlikely.

Boza there's Wild Slash
P1: tap Chandra for burnP2: wild slashP3: untap and burn againP4: something generic like magma jetP5: untap and burn a third time allP6: transform and +1
The p stands for play
June 16, 2015 5:04 a.m.
Chandra just says 'if Chandra has deal 3 or more damage this turn', however her tap effect only hits players. You could actually trigger her easily by attacking with her then casting a Giant Growth effect.
The problem with the sequence you listed above is that you're playing out nearly your entire hand just to flip her. If the opponent removes her or plays a large threat - you're then screwed.

Actually yeah man I think I've heard that one before. Where you waste all your resources n it kills you hand. Well there's Damnable Pact In the last set... Only thing is there's no Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
June 16, 2015 5:08 a.m.
IndepenentMeta says... #10
Yeah a growth effect would work better +2/2 n your turn on the spot with only wasting one card. And I think I did see a growth card In The spoilers if I'm not mistaken
June 16, 2015 5:10 a.m.
Titanic Growth is decent instant speed pump goodness.
Can we talk about limited? Based on the commons I'm seeing UW fliers (as usual) being dominant.
Scrapskin Drake, Charging Griffin, Disperse, Claustrophobia, this guy. Lots of common goodness in there too.
Edit: honestly I've seen UW fliers do well in limited formats a lot.
June 16, 2015 5:14 a.m. Edited.
I don't really get excited about standard sets for individual cards that often because a great degree of them don't transfer over to modern, but I've started to really enjoy drafting and sealed.

There also hydrolash which -2/0 and let's you draw a card for plus. There's also jhessian theif which is my fav artwork for the set. A lot of good options in blue so far... I might be going ur for my draft. But if there's a chance there's something like Abzan Banner or any generic mana cards. I'll be running a four color dek fast
June 16, 2015 5:29 a.m.
Fetches and tasigur, rhino, and a little kolaghan's command.
Yeah.
Though don't count the fetches too much. They weren't exactly an innovation.
It was a good block though, yes.

Ugin in one deck
But yeah over all I liked the set. Just because there was a lot of the stuff there that made it onto the modern board
June 16, 2015 6:04 a.m.
But regardless. I'm looking at the limited environment in this new set and liking what I see. Lots of common black killspells. Common and uncommon blue and white fliers. Common bombs in green. Lets hope red gets some nice things with haste or burn.

@ChiefBell I think we still can't say much about the limited environment since there's still so many cards we didn't know. But like you said, UW-fliers route is always a good option in limited, and usually got that cheap Aura to boost our flier. I see some niche in bounce UG with ETB effect, but I'm not hoping
June 16, 2015 6:37 a.m.
It should be noted that Chandra's 'Flip' ability is a part of her ability.
You cannot flip her simply by attacking with her and making her power 3+. - You would still need to untap her, and then use her ability.
June 16, 2015 8:04 a.m.
JWiley129- planes arn't connected, if I was in one world and named something serum another world can name something else serum.
Please don't respond as if u dont understand the way things have been named throughout history then u wouldnt have posted your last message :) thankyou
June 16, 2015 9:58 a.m.
hey wait a sec...can people remind me what's so bad about chandra? She doesn't actually seem that hard to flip, although you have to wait until turn 4. All you do is attack and cast any red spell, including creautures (Goblin Rabblemaster etc.) and just tap her to get the planeswalker.
is it that her other side kind of sucks?
June 16, 2015 10:04 a.m.
The benefits of any of the planeswalkers so far is marginal at best. Chandra is one dimensional. The benefits of NIssa are terrible and her condition is hard to trigger. Jace is a Merfolk Looter, but he becomes worse when he flips.
Chandra's front side being a worse Gelectrode for 3 mana is terrible. She artificially restricts your deck to RDW in order to be playable, which is always an archetype, but she is just lackluster because she is just a Goblin Fireslinger until invest 2 more cards in her. For your three cards, you get a free shock per turn. I am not impressed, Chandra...

So is anyone excited for the new Gideon? I know I am!
June 16, 2015 11:04 a.m.
FinchFalcon says... #28
Not yet, but HYYYYYYYYYYPPPPPPPPEEEEEE!!!
Seriously though, I don't know why people are hating on Chandra so much. I'm super excited to make a tiny leaders and/or actual EDH out of her.
June 16, 2015 11:16 a.m.
NoviceMagician says... #29
No, Gideon hasn't been spoiled, but as Mr. FinchFalcon said, "HYYYYYYYYYYPPPPPPPPEEEEEE!!!"
I also think a new Chandra will be cool. Nothing like a good ol' RDW to ruin the day. ;)
June 16, 2015 11:29 a.m.
Waitwaitwaitwaitwait. Did anyone realize that Chandra's Ignition can actually flip Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh? Awesome!
June 16, 2015 11:34 a.m.
IndepenentMeta says... #34
Yeah I'm differently running that this format as long as her playset isn't too expensive I'd be pretty badass n put her at 6-8 a pop...

Chandra's Ignition is going to be hella funny when cast on Zurgo Helmsmasher. Just saying.

NoviceMagician says... #37
Hehehe. I can't wait to cast it on a creature after blood rushing about every blood rush card I own. Instant board wipe.
June 16, 2015 11:47 a.m.
She's so mediocre. She basically adds 1 point of damage to every red burn spell, assuming she lives.
June 16, 2015 1:26 p.m.
NoviceMagician says... #39
Yeh but that flip doh! But yeah, until she flips, the creature form is a little weak sauce, but I do enjoy her planeswalker ultimate.
June 16, 2015 1:29 p.m. Edited.
Brad7986 - That's fine, but the multiverse isn't real life. They have said that Serum is a Mirrodin only thing. That's part of the reason Serum Visions wasn't reprinted in Theros block. Besides the fact that it won't be reprinted, there are flavor reasons for it not showing up. Besides, the serum from Serum Visions comes from Blinkmoths (e.g. Blinkmoth Nexus ).
Hopefully that convinces you why it wouldn't have even been considered.
June 16, 2015 1:48 p.m.
NoviceMagician says... #42
Well, for my casual group at least, her ultimate would wreck.
June 16, 2015 1:49 p.m.
Yeah As someone who mostly plays competitive 1v1 and Multiplayer EDH, nothing really interesting yet
June 16, 2015 1:51 p.m.

JWiley129: So, we can't have a potion-like serum on other planes?
June 16, 2015 1:53 p.m.
NoviceMagician says... #45
I myself really like Malakir Cullblade. I think the card looks sweet. I also like Infernal Scarring a bunch.
June 16, 2015 1:55 p.m.
Magicrafter - Nope. and arguably we can't have serum anymore b/c Mirrodin is now New Phyrexia.
June 16, 2015 2 p.m.
The Blinkmoth's, though still very low in number still exist... only now they have become corrupt and are Inkmoth's... likely any 'serum-like' liquid they may produce will have a vastly different effect.
It is still possible that a few original Blinkmoth still exist hidden on New Phyrexia, but that is not made clear one way or the other.
June 16, 2015 2:39 p.m.
Rayenous - Which is why I said 'arguably'. Anyways, my 2-cents on the Gideon speculation is that he'll be the largest creature wise, probably a 3/3 or so. His flip side will have some ability which turns him into a creature, but the other abilities I have no idea on.
IndepenentMeta - Everyone who plays Modern because it's closing in on a $10 common.

IndepenentMeta says... #50
A 2 drop to flip a walker would make walker oriented decks a little better
IndepenentMeta says... #1
Ok nows my chance....
So the reason I was saying that there might be a badass burn deck in the next is is due to some of the cards that are getting spoiled as we speak...
Right here we have the Chandra planeswalker
http://www.magicspoiler.com/mtg-spoiler/chandra-fire-of-kaladesh-chandra-roaring-flame/
Where she has an effect that kinda simulates the ascendancy combo. Where she untaps if you play a red spell.. If it deals 3 damage you can transform her and then get a plus loyalty for burning an opponent. So that's already 6 points of damage by her self. The tripy part is that those red spells that have been printed out have very high cmc spells. Which could lead us to speculate. Are there going to be any Lightning Strike, Lightning Bolt, or maybe a Magma Jet reprints in this pack? Or maybe a spell that lets you convolk for something cheap like (2xr)...
Anyways you look at it. The Chandra card could be a key card to the burn deck I'm talking bout...
