MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!
TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

I'd LOVE to see a Kaladesh set after BfZ. The plane looks so steampunk and awesome!
And the Nalaars are nice. It's almost a red Lingering Souls and plays with artifacts. Interesting at least.
June 18, 2015 3:36 p.m.
Kaladesh seems to contain animated artifacts...
Hoping for a reprint of Ornithopter, and (less likely) Ensoul Artifact.
I know Darksteel Citadel is out of the question, as none of the Planes are Mirrodin, but Orni and Ensoul are possible. - crosses fingers

The nice thing about the Nalaars though (and why they might work in a non artifact heavy set) is that they come with their own ammunition.

I would link the card, but it's MASSIVE on the webpage.
But it's for an Enchantment with the Garruk's Packleader ability.

Is that a fucking hedron creature on the art?!
Ahem... apparently this is what is meant when it was said Zendikar itself fights off invaders: it makes land-creature-elemental-things. Makes me think that Nissa didn't summon/control it, since she's asking for its help.
But card. I like this card. It's a good card. Comes in earlier than Garruk's Packleader and is susceptible to less removal, though it also doesn't have a body.

so what are we thinking about it? I see people saying they'd play it in modern, not sure if they're serious. I think it could see standard play. I don't do modern so I wouldn't know if you're serious ChiefBell
June 18, 2015 5:07 p.m.
The only deck in Modern I can think of right now that would run it is the Mono-G Genesis Wave deck. That or just combo it with cards like Kitchen Finks, Wild Nacatl, Tarmogoyf, and other Big Green Dudes.
June 18, 2015 5:08 p.m.
Green is getting totally playable card draw options. I can imagine slamming this down then following up with Wild Nacatls and Loxodon Smiters. Between this and Collected Company we seem to be reaching a stage where green can do more than just empty its hand and win with stomp or lose badly. Now that it can restock it can actually play longer, tactical games. Also this doesn't break the colour pie - so it's all fair.
I run a casual Naya midrange deck that's swapped between Collected Company and Domri Rade. This is exactly the kind of card it needs.

It doesn't appear to be much better than Temur Ascendancy to me. Being mono colored and triggering off of Deathmist Raptor are the two upsides I see, not sure if that pushes it into the realm of playable in Standard. I'd guess no, maybe out of the side vs U/B Control decks.
June 18, 2015 5:23 p.m.
As an aside, it's a strictly better Kavu Lair. A card I bet NO ONE knew existed.
June 18, 2015 5:26 p.m.
I did. Play lair in azusa EDH :)
Playing Rowen and Primitive Etchings in EDH is great fun.
June 18, 2015 5:28 p.m. Edited.
The best part is, is that that enchantment works awesome with collected company. It's worded as Enters the Battlefield, not Cast.
June 18, 2015 5:38 p.m.
WovenNebula says... #19
Actually Kavu Lair won me a FNM when it was in standard. Lol
June 18, 2015 5:40 p.m.
kyuuri117 - I might not play that in Collected Company decks. CoCo decks want a high density of creatures, and I feel like I'd want to optimize that as much as possible. When you look at CoCo decks they only have space for like 8 non-creature spells, 4 of which are Collected Company. I'd rather use those slots for removal spells than extra card draw.
June 18, 2015 5:41 p.m.
Nice new red legend. Maybe UR Ensoul decks can be a thing again?

FAMOUSWATERMELON says... #22
Well there's not much removal in Green, and the lists that run CoCo usually run Chord as well. So the real question is, is this a better card than Chord of Calling?
June 18, 2015 5:42 p.m.
Coco lists in standard aren't running chord. As far as modern goes, meh.
And the white/green coco decks in standard can drop the mastery of the unseen for this, while a mono-green coco deck can drop surrak or something.
June 18, 2015 5:50 p.m.
I think it's much easier to find power 3 than 4 especially in something like mono green elves or WR/WG aggro and with a single specific mana cost makes it plenty stronger than Temur Ascendancy for me.
PS. Haha, kavu lair, I remember you!
June 18, 2015 6:01 p.m.
Combo CoCo might want chord. Generic midrange doesn't need it.
June 18, 2015 6:03 p.m.
JohnnyBaggins says... #26
It is a million times better than Temur Ascendancy, wow. Not only its mana cost, but the difference between 3 and 4 toughness is huge.
By the way, does anyone see Courser of Kurphix being reprinted? I mean, we "stay" on Theros after all.
June 18, 2015 6:07 p.m.
Rasta_Viking29 says... #27
I think the lack of Fires of Yavimaya on the new card limits it to being marginally better at best. Honestly Deathmist Raptor is probably the only reason this new enchantment could be better than the Ascendancy in the current meta.
June 18, 2015 6:16 p.m.
Tidebreaker - They've said that Courser of Kruphix was a mistake. Granted that was probably the combination of Courser and Thoughtseize, but I doubt it's getting reprinted.
June 18, 2015 6:23 p.m.
Courser of Kruphix was a mistake! A pretty mild one - if at all!
June 18, 2015 6:25 p.m.
Rasta_Viking29 says... #31
Tidebreaker it is also worth noting that this card checks Power not Toughness. Courser will not trigger a draw.

The art on Elemental Bond is quite amazing. Wizards' artists have outdone themselves on this set so far.
I'm not sure Elemental Bond will be played competatively. Temur Ascendacy saw aproximately zero competative play, but Elemental Bond is two fewer colors and easier to trigger. I definately like the card and will be tossing a copy or two into several of my green decks.

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor says... #33
So is Elemental Bond our Courser of Kruphix replacement? Not nearly as good of course but easily nets green card draw especially for R/G Dragons :)

I think we're going to see two legends per color/planeswalker: One that aspired them to reach their potential (in Liliana's case Raven Man) and one that is the enemy (in Liliana's Kothoped).
June 18, 2015 7:48 p.m.
HolyFalcon says... #36
Or Hixus in Gideon's. The enemy in Chandra's is the law I guess.

Really hope they are reprinting Hero's Downfall. Need some direct pw removal and besides i bought a play set of the promo ones recently :P

I guess Utter End and Silumgar's Command are our go-to cards. Against Jace and Lili though, we got Display of Dominance :D
June 18, 2015 9:36 p.m.
Utter End - Exile that darned walker!
Personally if they print another P-Walker killing card I hope it doesn't hit creatures, just walkers and enchantments, and cost 2 diff colors. To understand my reasoning please take a look at what we have so far:
Kolaghan's Command - Destroys Jace, Nissa, Chandra and Gideon pre-flip + an artifact!
Utter End - Exiles any non-land permanent but cost 4.
Dromoka's Command - Makes it very easy for creature decks to beat up creatures while they are creatures, a.k.a. kill walkers.
Lightning Strike's replacement: Kills any of the walkers pre-flip. Post flip kills if they - at all. (Or even in Gideon's case, kills him in response to activation of his ability.)
Atarka's Command - Deals three dmg to Walkers in either form that can't be prevented.
Also keep id mind that any deck running K-command or A-Command will have access to Wild Slash, the Lightning Strike replacement, and any other burn spells for awhile. Any deck running D-Command should have plenty of creatures, even some big ones such as Anafenza, the Foremost to easily crush any walker. D-Command by itself makes nearly any two drop big enough to crush a walker. Utter End decks have Utter End, Despise and other discard.
So the only color left out is , which has counters for this sort of thing (Supposing they reprint Remove Soul, which they probably will. The reason it wasn't in standard for awhile is most likely because having access to both that and Nullify was to much. So really, when you consider how frail walkers are going to be for awhile, and how even four drop walkers just lost to Hero's Downfall every single time, I don't think now is the time to ask for another spell that can kill both walkers and creatures when every single 2 color combination already has multiple answers. Heck, even everything except for mono has answers and there is probably something from KTK block that I forgot about that can deal with these.

There's also Banishing Light, which can exile planeswalkers in addition to virtually anything else. kengiczar pretty much covered everything else to my knowledge.

Ragon_Wolfbane says... #43
In all honesty I don't see a reason for them to make walker killing cards in this set. If they would need one they'll likely print something similar to Hero's Downfall in Battle for Zendakir. I don't want to much walker focused hate honestly.

So I don't know about you guys, but I'm definitely building a new mono-white control once Origins comes out, whether Gideon is run is up to the playtests.
In modern at least, Akroan Jailer is weak sauce for mono white control.

Worrying about rotation is pointless right now. Right about the time BFZ spoilers start is when you should start thinking about the next. Standard format.

That feels really off topic Named_Tawyny..... Though if I had to take a guess, along side CoCo and Podless Pod putting up results

A mix of short supply, CoCo, Podless Pod, Junk, and burn becoming a serious Tier 1 deck.

I wish people would just leave the card database to myself and the few people I accept ...
People are putting both sides of a flip card in AND not putting images in for the cards again.
You know what's even worse?
THEY ARE REPLACING MY VERSIONS!

Actually, something else came to mind. The lack of the female pronoun on Kytheon, Hero of Akros kinda has me worried. I'm hoping it was just a space correction as WotC has a habit of altering text to make it look weird on paper just for it to fit in a text box nicely, but it could also be WotC coming really low on the quality of their product. I just hope it's one of those two and not a deliberate purpose. I'll just have to wait for more cards to get spoiled to see.

This is very much what I need for the Jeskai Affinity Midrange... uh, thing I'm brewing.
These two are supposed to be Chandra's parents, right? Hey, nice to meet you! May I introduce you to my friend Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer?
