MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!

TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

Boza says... #1

There is no need on that card for the female pronoun. Him refers to Kytheon, while his owner refers to the owner of Kytheon. Where must there be a female pronoun?

Femme_Fatale says... #2

Oh ... sorry. I must still be tired after work. I didn't even bother to read the full thing x.x

June 19, 2015 5:18 a.m.

IvoryFrost says... #3

I had to read it over a few times but the "his" is referring to Kytheon and not the player.

June 19, 2015 7:28 a.m.

IvoryFrost says... #4

Oh wow I didn't see the next page never mind what I said!

Rayenous says... #5

I'm suddenly hoping that Kaladesh will bring us Ratchet Bombs...

Ratchet Bomb for 0 = Kill all Flipped PW's.

Printing PW's only to put them in the same Standard format with something that all colors can use to remove any of them that easily. - It would be kind of like saying "We've made these fun and interesting Creature/PW mechanics.... but GODD LUCK USING THEM!"

June 19, 2015 7:56 a.m. Edited.

Brad7986 says... #6

Rayenous then nobody will play them, that combined with the fact u have to work for it will just make a horrible standard environment. They make screw ups but not purposely wrecking a whole new "type" of card

June 19, 2015 8:31 a.m.

Brad7986 says... #7

Femme_Fatale where should it have a female pronoun? the only mention of a gender is referring to Kytheon himself

June 19, 2015 8:39 a.m.

Brad7986 says... #8

Femme_Fatale sorry i saw your second message afterwards :X

iLikeDirt, I was reading JWiley129's comment mentioning them, when I noticed that they were more than double the price. Seemed easier to comment here than to start a new thread. ;)

June 19, 2015 8:49 a.m.

Anyone see the new red legendary? These guys. I'm liking it personally.

June 19, 2015 12:39 p.m.

seuvius says... #11

canterlotguardian that card was spoiled literally just a page back.

June 19, 2015 12:57 p.m.

Anyone think we will see a reprint of cards like Nissa's Chosen and Chandra's Phoenix? I know they aren't new or exciting but it would make sense if they did flavor wise.

Personally I think the phoenix would be rock solid in the current meta. Combos with Draconic Roar and Crackling Doom so well and would probably enable the big red deck Wizards has been pushing. I'm also picking up on a possible R/B graveyard/sacrifice archetype being hinted at in the spoilers and past block that it would slot into nicely.

June 19, 2015 12:57 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #13

I could see Chandra's Phoenix, but not Nissa's Chosen since it lost the utility it had from Nissa Revane.

June 19, 2015 1:27 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #14

So apparently they made a new Grindstone that's an enchantment. Card is definitely from Vryn since the flavortext references Jace.

Sorry card is massive, if Epochalyptik or ChiefBell want to go in and resize it that'd be great. I haven't found that functionality yet in the HTML.

June 19, 2015 1:38 p.m.

I TOTALLY LOVE THAT!!!!!!!!

June 19, 2015 1:42 p.m.

kengiczar says... #16

I love that once it's out, I don't have to pay for it. Now we definitely need a new way to exile graveyards other than than 4 cmc zombie however. I don't want some chump getting free Dig Through Times off this.

June 19, 2015 1:44 p.m.

Yeah that is really cool.

June 19, 2015 1:45 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #18

kengiczar - Everyone forgets Tormod's Crypt is in Standard right now.

June 19, 2015 1:46 p.m.

Does this mean that Painter's Servant is going to get the hammer now though?

June 19, 2015 1:47 p.m.

Oh wow. Better hurry up and buy me some Servants before price shoots up. XD

June 19, 2015 1:50 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #21

FAMOUSWATERMELON - Read the Tutelage, it says Non-land cards that share a color. So it's not as busted with Painter's Servant.

June 19, 2015 1:51 p.m.

Still. You could easily go for 5-6 cards every time. And that's EVERY time you draw...

June 19, 2015 1:52 p.m.

I can dig the card. Maybe I can build my janky casual Howling Mine + Jace's Erasure deck in Standard with Dictate of Kruphix + this.

June 19, 2015 1:53 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #24

I like it.

June 19, 2015 1:54 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #25

FAMOUSWATERMELON - Since it's not an insta-win like Grindstone + Painter's Servant , I think it's fine in Modern. I could be proven wrong, but I don't see this deck being super competitive/good.

June 19, 2015 1:54 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #26

Cycle of 3 mana enchantments?

June 19, 2015 2 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #27

Certainly looking that way ChiefBell.

June 19, 2015 2:03 p.m.

kengiczar says... #28

JWiley129 - That's because unless your using Delve it doesn't help your own plan at all. Sure it delays a Tasigur, the Golden Fang but it just means they hold up mana for counters or kill spells. I definitely have crypt in my sideboard when I play Tasigur though.

Something like Rest in Peace, Nihil Spellbomb, Scavenging Ooze or Relic of Progenitus would be much better with the enchantment I think. Also Crypt is M15 and will rotate out. So perhaps they will have something in BFZ to deal with graveyards?

June 19, 2015 2:04 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #29

kengiczar - Well crypt will be legal for ~3 months with Origins, so it's not gone yet. But I see where you're going with that. Against Delve it's super bad.

June 19, 2015 2:07 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #30

So formatting question wrt the above card. When it says '... both nonland cards that share a colour...' Should that be read as 'share one or more colours', or read as 'share exactly one colour'?

June 19, 2015 2:39 p.m.

kengiczar says... #31

It means "Share one or more colors".

June 19, 2015 2:42 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #32

Named_Tawyny - They have to share a color. So Kathari Bomber and Zurgo Helmsmasher both share a color, so they would count. So too does Spectral Procession and Narset Transcendent. But Sphere of the Suns and Wayfarer's Bauble don't share a color b/c they're colorless.

June 19, 2015 2:43 p.m.

Boza says... #33

Well, speak of an underwhelming card. It really does not do much of anything and there are way more potent mill options in U available (maybe not in standard, but in modern for sure).

June 19, 2015 2:47 p.m.

seuvius says... #34

what are you talking about? this card is great, especially when paired with Painter's Servant

June 19, 2015 2:49 p.m.

kengiczar says... #35

Oh holy crap I didn't realize Painter's Servant was modern legal, I thought for sure it was banned. Time for a mill deck!

June 19, 2015 2:56 p.m.

I'm pumped for sphinx's tutelage... It looks really fun to play with and it's an uncommon. I also want there to be a link between that and Sphinx's Revelation because that would make me happy

June 19, 2015 5:12 p.m.

so we've got a modern legal Grindstone okay that seems cool

4 sphinx 4 painter4 mindcrank4 duskmantle guildmage

June 19, 2015 5:21 p.m.

All i know is that given the power level of these two I'm stoked for Chandra's enchantment (I'm calling a young pyromancer kind of card) and Lili's enchantment (necrogen mists maybe?).

June 19, 2015 5:24 p.m.

JDMCRIB says... #39

They're also uncommons as well! At least they'll be easy to get.

June 19, 2015 5:26 p.m.

also right now I'm calling that Condescend is primed for a reprint. Generic name, scry, hasn't seen a print since Tenth edition, and most importantly is a 1 cmc blue scry at common from fifth dawn. Troll opportunity.

June 19, 2015 5:27 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #41

But it's not 1cmc and unconditional because you need a target spell to actually attempt to counter. Also paying 1 mana JUST to scry is horrible.

June 19, 2015 5:28 p.m.

I love how everybodys missing "nonland".

June 19, 2015 8:13 p.m.

6tennis says... #43

Serendipitous_Hummingbird You're forgetting 4 Ascension.

MAGESTIC_LLAMA Oh. Okay. /sadface/

Anyway, Sphinx's Tutelage is awesome! I wanna build a deck around it now.

June 19, 2015 8:23 p.m. Edited.

Magnivore says... #44

The majority of the words in the OP are confusing the hell out of me.

June 19, 2015 8:25 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #45

Care to explain, Magnivore?

June 19, 2015 8:29 p.m. Edited.

seuvius says... #46

What's confusing?

June 19, 2015 8:48 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #47

Now there is ONE thing I REALLY want to know:

WHERE'S ALL THE MASSIVE IMAGES COMING FROM!?

I haven't seen a set that has released so many at once. So far that is totaling 4 massive images, and it's awesome, because they look really really nice.

June 19, 2015 9:45 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #48

Femme_Fatale - Some of the media outlets were probably given high-res pictures of the cards, and such they are larger than they need to be. Like go look at the Gideon spoiler article, the card takes up the entire computer screen!

June 19, 2015 9:47 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #49

I know, those are the ones I used. I have all 4 that were spoiled that peeps have found so far.

June 19, 2015 9:51 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #50

Could I sense a return to mono-blue Standard mill for me? It's tempting.
