MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!

TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

kengiczar you do realize that Hasbro owns both Wizards of the Coast and the My Little Pony franchise, right? so technically they're brothers (sisters?) already.

Oh my god! I had no idea! Damnit..now I am super tempted to play the MLP trading card game. Must, hold, on! I must be strong! Says this as he's jamming to Happyness on Pandora.

the prowess creature looks really amazing. taigams strike on it, 4/4 unblockable that draws you a card, pretty wololo.

The red stuff got a 2. Inbefore, wildslash, dead. Pretty bad card for 3 mana. There is way much better stuff to play for that mana cost.

The 4 mana burn is hilarous. Lighting bolt + scry 1 for 4 fucking mana? I say nope, wizards. Just nope. Propably one of the worst burn spells printed since Theros.

ChiefBell says... #4

Yeah - notice the rarity level. Common.

New Prowess cards, F$@& yea!!!

For people who don't think that Protection can easily confuse players (even experienced ones) I have one (evergreen) word for you. Trample.

Ask around at your LGS next FNM, and see how many people can easily explain how Trample and Protection interact.

That aside, now that protection is deciduous, I wonder if we won't start seeing it turn up more as "protection from THING" (a la Dragon Hunter rather than "protection from COLOUR" (a la Stormbreath Dragon

Also, so glad that Menace is finally keyworded.

Lame_Duck says... #7

Ohthenoises, if you need an acronym to remember how an ability works, that's a pretty good indicator that it's too complicated.

June 8, 2015 9:49 a.m.

To ------: I want you to consider something that no one ever considers when they talk about how bad a card is. Wizards has to keep Limited in mind when they make these cards. Cards like Bolt of Keranos and Lightning Javelin may be horrendous in Constructed play, but in Limited? That's nothing to sneeze at.

June 8, 2015 9:50 a.m.

Putrefy says... #9

@ Named_Tawyny that should be common knowledge by now. Same for Trample + Deathtouch...

June 8, 2015 10:12 a.m.

@Putrefy really? common knowledge? how often does Pr+T come up in Standard play? or Constructed play in general, for that matter? in my experience, not very often at all.

June 8, 2015 10:14 a.m.

Putrefy says... #11

It's not so long ago people tried blocking Fanatic of Xenagos with Soldier of the Pantheon...

June 8, 2015 10:19 a.m.

Huh. I have literally never had that interaction come up in my Standard games (and I used to run Jund aggro with the Fanatic). That's weird. You learn something new every day, I guess.

June 8, 2015 10:20 a.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #13

@Putrefy:

Should be common knowledge? Absolutely. Is common knowledge? Not so much. It's a semi-frequent interaction (at least it was) but seemed to confuse at least some of the people all of the time. "Attack with Atarka, World Render". "Block with Dragon Hunter". "JUDGE!!!"

June 8, 2015 10:30 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #14

So the question is - to what extent to we pander to people who are just bad at the game?

June 8, 2015 10:30 a.m.

Jhessian Theif shares its name with things like Jhessian Infiltrator and Jhessian Lookout, so are Alara based mechanics such as exalted or lore inbound? If we have already noticed this feel free to slap me.

June 8, 2015 10:37 a.m.

Putrefy says... #16

At the tournaments I play I'm relentless. Missed your trigger, that's too bad. Played the wrong land and want to re-do, nope. I said damage you said yes and now you want to kill my creature, too late, Sir.

But we have a very experienced and competitive field, so I can expect my opponent to play tight and know the rules.

June 8, 2015 10:39 a.m.

JakeHarlow says... #17

That's a totally reasonable expectation within a competitive environment, Putrefy. If I'm playing a newbie at FNM, I'm not so exacting, but for seasoned players my approach is the same as yours.

My reasoning is that if a player is going to enter into a tournament setting, they need to be competent with the game's rules. FNM is largely designed to ease newer players into a higher level of play, so I keep that in mind when I'm matched with a fledgling player. I'm forgiving and do what I can to help them (if they want the advice/pointers; many do not and prefer to make their mistakes and learn on their own). Otherwise, when I'm up against a seasoned player, I behave as if it is competitive REL.

June 8, 2015 10:48 a.m.

vishnarg says... #18

Protection does have some weird rules... but I still play with people who have been playing for a year now and still tap to block. I've been playing almost 5 years but I play mostly casual these days haha. Still, it's good to know the rules front and back.

June 8, 2015 11:19 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #19

From reading the article, they aren't getting rid of protection anyways. They're just going to use it less. It's not like they used it that often anyways. Honestly i welcome these changes i feel like the game could use a little refreshing. I like scry becoming evergreen. It offers library manipulation to colors like white and green who otherwise have very little of that. That's prettt good for limited at least.

June 8, 2015 11:20 a.m.

vishnarg says... #20

Perma-scry ftw

June 8, 2015 11:23 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #21

I think the big thing that most of us missed is exactly what Putrefy and JakeHarlow just mentioned. These changes aren't made to "help" or "hurt" the competitive player, which to be frank most of us are. We often forget that a VAST majority of Magic players don't play in sanctioned tournaments, PPTQs, GPs, or the Pro Tour.

Oh, and as VampireArmy said, Protection isn't gone. it's just being used less. MaRo says in his article that there is one creature with Protection in Magic Origins.

June 8, 2015 11:24 a.m.

I kinda wish they would make more creatures with Protection from aura spells. That would be an interesting path to explore.

June 8, 2015 11:28 a.m.

CuteSnail says... #23

I'm surprised prowess returned so quickly.

June 8, 2015 11:31 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #24

And while we've been arguing, NEW CARDS!!

Of note all the commons and uncommons listed will be in the new 30 card starter decks

June 8, 2015 11:33 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #25

Two things

Malakir Vampires!!!!!! Fanboying hard

That spider is terrifying. Like no

June 8, 2015 11:39 a.m.

Holy Jesus, Valor in Akros is going into my mono-white tokens EDH. That and Cathars' Crusade out at the same time? Yes please.

June 8, 2015 11:41 a.m. Edited.

JWiley129 says... #27

Oh, one more new card.

June 8, 2015 11:49 a.m.

HolyFalcon says... #28

That Infernal Scarring looks good. Same with Subterranean Scout.

June 8, 2015 11:54 a.m.

ChiefBell so long as WotC doesn't do what they did with theros and print high CMC cards with scry when you can get the same effect for a lower CMC with scry. If we continue to get cards like Dissolve which is on par with Cancel I think the extra scry would be beneficial to modern.

June 8, 2015 12:31 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #30

Avaricious Dragon is where it's at. That's modern playable & can open the doors to a new archetype.

June 8, 2015 12:44 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #31

I view the dragon as having potential use in RDW as a top end SB card for the grindier matches. (AKA against B/G/x) By the time you cast him in those matches your hand should be empty, (between their Thoughtsieze effects and the natural casting of 16-20 1 drops) and this dodges Abrupt Decay. I could see drawing 1-2 cards off of him in those matches allowing RDW to keep the gas coming.

June 8, 2015 1:13 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #32

CanadianShinobi - Not every card needs to be Constructed playable, it's OK that Bolt of Keranos exists and it's OK that it's not Standard playable.

June 8, 2015 1:23 p.m.

JakeHarlow says... #33

I agree. This card is awesome!

June 8, 2015 1:24 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #34

Also, since this thread is 2 pages long now, can we get this featured Epochalyptik so no other threads accidentally pop up?

June 8, 2015 1:28 p.m.

Hjaltrohir says... #35

Putrefy Questions should always be asked in the Q and A bar, etc.

It would tap for only as it is a basic Island so the non-basic clause on Blood Moon renders it exempt.

APPLE01DOJ I totally agree, the card is insane...

Edited post 5 times...

June 8, 2015 1:29 p.m. Edited.

ChiefBell says... #36

awesomeguy37 - that is incorrect.

June 8, 2015 1:32 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #37

awesomeguy37 - Actually it will be a mountain b/c Blood Moon came into play after Spreading Seas. Welcome to Layers! jazz hands

June 8, 2015 1:32 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #38

That is also incorrect. It has nothing to do with layers. It's timestamps.

June 8, 2015 1:33 p.m.

6tennis says... #39

These cards are neat. Avaricious Dragon made me cry, because we JUST got Thunderbreak Regent. Above-curve Dragons is gonna be a new archetype.

Still, the Theros flavor is really good. And what are mage-rings?

June 8, 2015 1:34 p.m. Edited.

Hjaltrohir says... #40

ChiefBell JWiley129 Sorry, my bad.

Spreading Seas turns the land into an island but not a basic island, right? Is that where I went wrong?

June 8, 2015 1:36 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #41

awesomeguy37 - Correct. If the land is non-basic to begin with, Spreading Seas will turn it into a non-basic Island. Then Blood Moon comes in and turns that non-basic Island into a non-basic Mountain.

A Storm Crow with Prowess and Menace. Most broken creature in the set

June 8, 2015 2:30 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #43

A storm crow with prowess and menace actually wouldn't be awful. It's a low cost super evasive creature with the ability to be pumped by counterspells in response to their removal.

Minelia5 says... #44

I need another gimmmicky card so I can build a deck like my Sunbond one. ; (

WHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

willsm87 says... #45

Did anyone else notice that in the new 30 card into deck things they send to stores... green has elves... I really hope we get elves in standard again. All of the cards in there will be standard legal when Origins comes out... Elvish Visionary was one!

Pretty excited!

June 8, 2015 2:40 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #46

Um, yeah we'd have elves either way. We'll see Zendikar and Lorwyn in Origins, both of which have elves. Even if we didn't have elves in Origins we'd have elves in Battle for Zendikar because they're rather important there.

June 8, 2015 2:42 p.m.

Minelia5 says... #47

hey what do you guys think about that 4/4 mythic dragon and the 1/1 vampire warrior? I think the vampire could most definitely fit in with W/B warriors, and the dragon is pretty sweet. Jeez, just throw that in with your mono red deck! Works well with Thunderbreak Regent as well. But mainly, I'm pumped for an interesting vampire WARRRIOR. I LOVE WARRIORS!

June 8, 2015 2:42 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #48

My opinion on the vampire is that it's okay but I miss good ol Vampire Lacerator and Gatekeeper of Malakir

June 8, 2015 2:54 p.m.

I can't access the Wizard's article (I'm at work), so could someone quote the relevant changes to Protection? Are they even changing the way it works, or just not using it much in the future?

June 8, 2015 3:03 p.m.

kengiczar says... #50

Omg that Dragon is so sick! It doesn't really mesh with our current Dragons unless you're really dedicated to 4x mana dorks at 1 and 2 mana each, as well as 1 and 2 drop burn but it's very cool looking imo.

Also it's a 4/4 for 4 that flies just like Thunderbreak Regent so it looks like the days of all the red creatures with CMC >2 being over costed are over!
