MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!
TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

Separatist Voidmage... another self-bouncing creature for Animar, Soul of Elements to abuse. :)

Holy crap I just realized that 6 drop white creature is a "Giant Soldier"! This is amazing!
First the card already isn't bad for an uncommon as I very much doubt any red spell will be able to kill it unless that red spell has in it's cost. Second in a draft it might not be so bad to have this guy. Third typically their is usually some unwritten tax on most unpopular creature types. For example go back and look at pretty much any 1 or 2 color Centaur before Courser of Kruphix. Most of them are bad, even the rares.

kengiczar.... true, the Dragon isn't great with the current Dragons, but it certainly works with Whip of Erebos while it's still in Standard, (as a discard ability... not for being reanimated as you'd discard, but never draw.), and other reanimation abilities.
Also... It will be absolutely powerful when/if you get multiples of it in play... card draw stacking, discard not stacking.

Thanks JWiley129. You put my mind at ease for Modern purposes at least. Kor Firewalker will still be there for my burn opponents!

Do we think Dragons wants Avaricious Dragon? Thunderbreak Regent is probably better, but Avaricious seems like it should be fine once Theros rotates (the hand discarding thing kinda sucks, but getting two cards to work with per turn seems workable). Thoughts?
June 8, 2015 3:34 p.m.
@awesomeguy37 I actually know the answer to the question, I just wanted to point out that Magic is still complex even if we lose stuff like Protection.
June 8, 2015 3:37 p.m.
alexthegreat38 says... #8
I have to have judges explain to people what all Protection includes, cause so many players just don't understand it. I've even beaten experienced players because they've forgotten about all the things it includes.
June 8, 2015 3:40 p.m.
Rayenous, I don't use whip or many artifacts in general, so is it illegal to activate it before the draw step? I figured you could to get the aditional draw with the dragon from it.
June 8, 2015 3:51 p.m.
Subscribing.
I'm officially getting a bunch of that dragon. 3good5me.

Whip of Erebos' activated ability can only be used at sorcery speed.

Lol yeah JWiley129, I typo'd pretty bad at first. Love this new edit feature.

Dragon is good (now we have two fat four-drop dragons in red!) The rest, except Lily and the new Goblin, are meh. Spoil the bulk commons first much? And this is coming from someone who likes "bad" cards.
June 8, 2015 4:47 p.m. Edited.
lol thanks JakeHarlow as you can see I never use the card seeing as I didn't spend the time to read it.
June 8, 2015 4:59 p.m.
hey MinscAndBoo you like the new Goblin? I think it's pretty terrible.
June 8, 2015 4:59 p.m.
JakeHarlow says... #20
But it looks like a fun casual Goblin dude. And the flavor text is adorable.

While the Dragon looks natural in mono red decks, it actually is not that great. The extremely aggressive decks want to win on turn 4, and Gruul dragons doesn't want to discard their hand on turn 4. What do you guys think?
June 8, 2015 5:28 p.m.
MinscAndBoo says... #22
I mean, he's not a Rabblemaster. But there are worse things than an evasive 3-drop 3/2 goblin.
June 8, 2015 5:30 p.m.
MinscAndBoo says... #23
As for Dragon, you just need him in the right deck. Anything with graveyard mechanics or reanimation could make use of this guy. He's not an auto-fit everywhere like the Bolt dragon.

JakeHarlow says... #24
I think it wants to be built around. I'm almost firing blind here, but what about using it as a top-end card in a Rakdos madness deck? Competitive, no. Fun, probably.
I also think it's a great curve-topper for red decks that are already almost out of cards by the time they reach four mana.

Rasta_Viking29 says... #25
Avaricious Dragon requires deck building considerations and can not just be shoved into any old deck. That said, with proper deck building it should be great in actual gameplay. Decks that do want it will be prioritizing tempo over card advantage, meaning it's amount of play might ebb with the flow of the meta.

So back on the topic of the 30 card decks... Did anyone notice that they're including a rare in each pack? Mahamoti Djinn for blue, Nightmare for black, Terra Stomper for green, Aegis Angel for white, and Shivan Dragon for red. I think this is the first time they've ever done that in the 30 card "intro decks".
June 8, 2015 5:42 p.m.
Rasta_Viking29 says... #27
canterlotguardian nah, I believe those are the same rares included in last years decks as well.
June 8, 2015 5:44 p.m.
canterlotguardian - except they did it last year for M15 where they had the exact same rares in the intro decks :) as Rasta_Viking29 noted.

canterlotguardian says... #29
In the 30 card decks? I remember those were the rares in the Deck Builder's Toolkit, but not in the 30 card intro packs.
June 8, 2015 5:48 p.m.
canterlotguardian - I can confirm those cards are in the 30 card decks. I played with them a few weeks ago while teaching a newer player.
June 8, 2015 5:49 p.m.
canterlotguardian says... #31
Wow. I guess it was because I was out of Standard for most of the Theros block up until KTK released. My bad. :P
June 8, 2015 5:50 p.m.
I remember those as the Deck Builder's Toolkit rares. Talking about the Dragon, anyone ever build around Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker's ultimate? It's kinda similar.

I kind of like that dragon in a mono red deck as a finisher. Thunderbreak Regent maybe. Will have to include it in some deck.

Mono red and finisher don't seem like the correct choice of words

Every deck needs some sort of way to close the game out. Even if that way is "the whole deck" lol.
June 8, 2015 6:39 p.m.
@putrefy Mountain, and your snarky little attempt at making Magic seem complex failed.
June 8, 2015 6:40 p.m.
Doge - I wouldn't say it failed, but you aren't the audience that it's confusing for. So many magic players forget they uses to be new players. Magic is an INCREDIBLY complex game, and being elitist about needing to overcome complexity doesn't help anyone.

Jumping on the hype train, dudududududum :)
Anyhow, fun! Liking the blue card. Also a total fan of the red dragon. A 4/4 for 4 mana AND you get to draw an extra card???? Beautiful.

Also, can I just describe my love for the artwork on that Jhessian Thief?
So adorable.

I wonder if, with the abolishment of the core sets, the Deckbuilder's Toolkit will continue. My store owner hopes so, he said they were one of the best sellers in the shop.
June 8, 2015 7:32 p.m.
JakeHarlow says... #43
I think they were fun. Maybe they'll be continued for expansions?
June 8, 2015 7:35 p.m.
I just went ahead and pre-ordered Liliana, Heretical Healer (I feel that her price is going to spike. She's $20 right now). I know, a bit impatient of me, but her card is the one I'm most excited to use. I'll get the rest closer to the release date.
All I can do is pray that the black mythic is not playable in standard.

Well they were great for newer players interested in getting into the game, and where that store is located, there are a lot of newbie players every single year.

people get confused in magic when there logical assumption isnt correct. with hexproof a card using the word "choose" instead of "target" can still effect it. even thought your doing the same thing the wording that counts. if you just read the remminder text you would assume that since it doesnt say prevent than a card like Skullcrack would not effect your creature during combat, but it would. i guess what im getting at is that if the reminder text said "damage that would be dealt is prevented" instead of "damage cant be dealt" it would prevent that misunderstanding and the one that always seems to acure with protection vs trample. it is easy to understand but you would be ammazed at how long a player can go without seeing an interaction

Hydrolash is the card control decks must have! 3 mana, anti-aggro, draw a card at instant speed. Very nice.
Entralling Victor is basicly a 3/2 with a nerfed Act of Treason imprinted on it. Good deal for 4 mana.
The new dragon is just wololo! This dude will be staple in red deck wins, as you'll have no hand cards to discard either way and you'll be able to keep the aggro going into midgame by drawing more cards. Hell yes, and it's a 4/4 flying dragon for 4 mana. Best Friends with Thunderbreak Regent!1!
Akroan Jailer, 1/1 white 1-drop that has 3&tap, tap creature.Nice as a fast 1-drop that doesn't lose it's power as the game goes on. With the tap-effect it'll still kick ass in turn 3. Therefore, propably one of the best 1-drops out there.
Conclave naturalists, a 5 mana 4/4 Reclamation Sage that triggers feroucious and propably formidable. Very strong, especially in green where you have alot of ramp going on. Surrak says hi!

GeminiSpartanX - Protection isn't changing, it's usage is going to decrease. It's moving from an evergreen mechanic to a deciduous one, which means it will only be used as needed instead of being in every set.
