MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!

TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

Just because they don't test cards for modern doesn't mean they don't realize when something would be incredibly broken. Well, except Treasure Cruise.

June 24, 2015 6:03 p.m.

JDMCRIB says... #2

Alpinisth While that's true, and Wizards must know that to some degree, they design cards for Standard. It was mentioned in another thread that MaRo said that Nissa says "basic" for power-level reasons. If that's true, there is a high chance that, for Limited and Standard reasons, there will be nonbasics with the Forest subtype in Standard again. What those could be is entirely up to speculation; we'd like to think Legendary ABUR lands in the allied colors will be it, but no one can know for sure.

JWiley129 says... #3

pumpkinwavy - R&D knew that Treasure Cruise would be strong in older formats, not broken. That's why they have a ban list, to ban troublesome cards before they ruin the format. And Day's Undoing isn't going to get banned b/c it's not that good. It's a powerful effect, but with one too many sentences.

And I'll say it again. Legendary ABUR duals won't be printed b/c they are too close to the ABUR duals for the purposes of the Restricted List. That is all.

June 24, 2015 6:07 p.m.

smackjack says... #4

JWiley129 the reserved list prohibits functional reprints like Armageddon and Ravages of War. Being legendary is a drawback, just like loosing 2 life. It would not violate the reserved list.

June 24, 2015 6:26 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #5

@elpokitolama Day's Undoing doesn't give your opponent the same number of cards as you - at least not in terms of card advantage.

Yes, you'll both end up with seven cards upon resolution, but the important number isn't how many you end up with - it's how many you started with.

It's like with wrath effects - yes, you both end up with no creatures, but the important thing is that when you cast it (if you're using it properly) you don't have many creatures out, and they have a board full - that's card advantage.

Same here. If you cast it when your hand is empty, and they still have four cards in hand - you've just gone up four cards in card advantage - that's huge.

June 24, 2015 6:35 p.m.

smackjack From the Official Reprint Policy: A card is considered functionally identical to another card if it has the same card type, subtypes, abilities, mana cost, power, and toughness

Given that a Legendary land otherwise identical to an ABUR dual has the same card type (land), subtype (pick any two plains/island/swamp/mountain/forest), ability (tap for the appropriate mana), and mana cost (along with power and toughness) is not applicable because it is a land, a legendary ABUR dual would actually be considered a functional reprint according to the Reserve List

June 24, 2015 6:35 p.m.

Named_Tawyny never underestimate the power of screwing up a player's hand. Their sequencing will be all screwed up

June 24, 2015 6:37 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #8

Yup, that too. The card that two turns ago they scried to the top and drew? Gone. =)

June 24, 2015 6:41 p.m.

smackjack says... #9

Well then shocks are a violation of the R.list? It has the same card type (land), subtype (pick any two..), ability (tap for appropriate mana) and mana cost (along with power and toughness) as ABURs..

June 24, 2015 6:42 p.m.

Can we all just agree that the Reserved List was a stupid idea?

June 24, 2015 6:44 p.m.

00xtremeninja says... #11

yeah but the shocks have a draw back. you either have it entered tapped or you are getting pinged for two. That is enough of a difference for the R. List. Just because you pop Legendary on it and that limits people to only using 1 during a game isn't enough of a drawback

June 24, 2015 6:45 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #12

Shocks have the additional ability of "Comes into play tapped unless you pay 2 life" (or similar - I can't actually be bothered to look it up right now).

IF Wizards wanted to print Legendary ABURs (and I don't imagine they will), they COULD argue that Legendary carries an implied ability of "If you control two or more CARDNAME at the same time, choose one and put the rest into the graveyard" (Alternatively, they could make them non-legendary, but with that ability explicitly on the card), but there are going to be a lot of people who wouldn't be happy with that.

June 24, 2015 6:46 p.m.

smackjack says... #13

.. And with legendary lands you can only have one out at the time. Thats a drawback..

June 24, 2015 6:47 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #14

@CanadianShinobi - even the folk at Wizards think that the Reserve list was a stupid idea. I think most people (other than hard core collectors) would agree.

@00xtremeninja - I think it could be argued that limiting you to one on the field at a time (and making your others essentially dead draws) is a bigger drawback than shocks. But the issue isn't the size of the drawback, it's whether or not it has different abilities. They could have benefits and still be fine - as long as they're different.

June 24, 2015 6:50 p.m.

Bellock86 says... #15

Reserved list aside, there is another major reason we won't get any form of a dual land that carries 2 land types. Fetches. They will NOT allow duals to happen in standard while fetches are legal. Period. it's just too powerful for standard. If they did that standard would just become mini modern.

June 24, 2015 6:50 p.m.

smackjack says... #16

heres a clear view of the art at least..

June 24, 2015 6:51 p.m.

00xtremeninja says... #17

I thought of something a day or two ago, because of all of these combined cards coming out in origins, we could get lands like this;

Tropical Oasis

Land--Island Forest

When Tropical Oasis comes into play, it can only tap for . The next time it is tapped, add or to your mana pool.

Kind of playing off of the River of Tears style with an ABUR dual land.

June 24, 2015 6:53 p.m.

smackjack says... #18

Bellock86: why cant standard have nice things? Why is it a bad thing if standard would become more like modern? Ive heard this argument over and over and i just dont get it..

June 24, 2015 6:57 p.m.

smackjack says... #19

00xtremeninja: interesting :) How about "when xxx enters the BF exile 2 cards from your GY or exile xxx"? Would be nice :)

June 24, 2015 6:59 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #20

smackjack - No one is saying that Standard can't have nice things. We got fetchlands, remember? It's just that Wizards has an idea of the power level they want for Standard and a power level they want for Modern, and they aren't close. That's it. If you can't understand that, then I don't know if there's much else we can say.

June 24, 2015 7:41 p.m.

00xtremeninja says... #21

smackjack that'd be cool too. Exile something from GY or hand.

Magicrafter I would be psyched because Temur would finally have a funtioning mana base.

JWiley129 says... #28

Btw, Chandra got officially spoiled by Geek & Sundry on Twitter.

June 24, 2015 8:38 p.m.

smackjack it isn't that the shock lands have a drawback. It's that they have additional lines of text. Technically they are fetchable tapped lands that you can put into play untapped. What matters isn't the 2 life, but rather the additional text and ability. The ability to come into play tapped for example.

It doesn't have to be a drawback either. Technically this would not violate the reserve list:

Ancestral Tropics

Land - Island Forest

Tap: Add or to your mana pool

When Ancestral Tropics enters the battlefield, draw three cards

Now of course that would never happen. It's obscene. But because it has that clause it means it isn't a functional reprint.

As long as 'legendary' remains a supertype, legendary ABURs violate the reprint list

Serendipitous_Hummingbird To be honest, I would rather wizards print an entire set of fan made monstrosities, like the card below, before they print something like the thing you just described. enter image description here

Unmade (by WotC)

They go thru mtgcardsmith and pick random cards then make the formatting make sense.

kyuuri117 - I can't even figure put what that card you posted does.

6tennis says... #33

kyuuri117 Dear lord, it's been a while since I saw the Moon Tree Monstrosity. Anyhoo, ABUR duals will never be a thing again. Ever. End of story. They won't reprint Karoo-lands, shocklands, or checklands for a long time. They did painlands in the last core set, so that probably won't happen. You know...they could do storage duals. Anyone with me on this one?

June 24, 2015 9:59 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #34

I think were more likely to get more pain lands in battle for Z. I think they are not going to reprint the other cycle of fetch lands, there's no need. They aren't abhorrently expensive, and all ten of em are now legal in modern.

June 24, 2015 10:01 p.m.

@kyuuri117 personally I would prefer something like what Serendipitous_Hummingbird suggested to that gramatical mess of text. Also to be fair if ancestral tropics was a thing it would be an entertaining card for casual play while banned in almost every form of constructed play with the exception of vintage in which it would be limited.

6tennis eww storage lands

June 24, 2015 10:04 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #37

OtakulordAndrew It would not be limited in vintage. If that cycle of lands was printed, it would be banned in all formats, including EDH. It's a tutor-able, free, ancestral visions that can be bounced and played again.

kyuuri117 says... #41

6tennis The world is not getting elfball in standard. The only elf that has been spoiled that is at all worth playing is Elvish Visionary. The rest of em are not competitive. So that gives you Elvish Mystic and Elvish Visionary. Both great early drops for any deck running green and creatures, but definitely no elf ball this standard.

That's not to say some poor idiots aren't going to spend money trying to make it work. There will be. Just isn't going to be competitive.

The black one is great, where as the blue one looks good on paper but I feel it won't preform well at all.

June 24, 2015 11:17 p.m.

The Faerie will see lots of play in drafts, I know that for sure.

June 24, 2015 11:29 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #46

1/1 fliers for 1 aren't that good. The Zombie is really good, but the Faerie isn't.

REMINDER In limited you aren't restricted by the rule-of-4 like in Constructed. If you draft 23 Jace, the Mind Sculptors, you can run a deck with 17 Island and 23 Jace, the Mind Sculptor.

June 25, 2015 12:06 a.m.

It isn't the 1/1 flying that makes it cool, it's the ETB effect. Which is why it'll run pretty cool in limited

I don't really do Limited at all, so today was a little disappointing for me, though the cards were kinda cool. Here's hoping some really nice cards are spoiled tomorrow (today), and hopefully a Menace mythic :D

June 25, 2015 12:20 a.m.

Yeah, a Menace mythic would be cool. We just have seen very few menace cards so far, and I think menace is really cool. I hope we get at least one 1 drop with menace
