MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!
TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

Welp, glad I have not gotten rid of every single pain land from m15... oh wait, I did.

New duals would have broke the Standard metagame. Reprint of an already legal dual or none at all were the only options.

Alhammarret's Archive looks pretty great for edh. From a flavor perspective i find it funny how well it works with Sphinx's Revelation as well.

Called it. Pains. Kinda wished we had allied colors tho.
June 25, 2015 11:06 a.m.
Hey, now I don't need to spend as much time and money on mana if I stay in Temur.

Allied color painlands would really push those color combination since they have access to fetchland too. I agree it's not very exciting, but it's a sound decision from wizards.
June 25, 2015 11:11 a.m.
@magnetcrocodile - With that logic, you can also assume that there will be no Zendikar Fetches in BfZ... otherwise the enemy colors will be 'really pushed'.
June 25, 2015 11:13 a.m.
Can't say for sure... but only the enemies have been spoiled so far.

Rayenous not really. Rotation happens and we have a new meta without scry lands.
June 25, 2015 11:18 a.m.
While that is true... you'll still have more enemy color land than you do allied color lands. - hence 'pushed'.
Printing the allied color pains now would have 'pushed' allied colors for a few months. - Instead (if they reprint the Zen Fetches) we will have enemy colors 'pushed' for an entire block (6 months).
Between the M15 release and and KTK release, allied colors had these pain lands when enemy colors did not... it would be no different than that if they had printed the allied color now.

PAIN LANDS AGAIN. WHY DOES THIS EXIST.
Helm of the Gods (shown below) is crap until we get more equipment. Renown is looking good so far, as we're starting to get some cards that support the mechanic. Where did all the shit for menace and prowess go? Also, the Archive is looking to be great in Esper Dragons.
June 25, 2015 11:32 a.m. Edited.
Don't know how to image link.
Helmet of the Gods - 1
Artifact - Equipment (R)
Equipped creature gets +1/+1 for each enchantment you control.
Equip 1

Also realized that image link does not help because the image is in Japanese.
June 25, 2015 11:34 a.m.
Menace, Prowess, and Scry are not 'specifically' Origin's mechanics. - They are simply mechanics which may show up in any set/block.
It is possible we could have already seen all the cards with these mechanics. Not likely... we'll probably see a few more, but I wouldn't count on them being as commonly used as Renown or Spellmastery.
June 25, 2015 11:38 a.m. Edited.
6tennis did you mean until we get more enchantments? I'd say we have enough anyways.
June 25, 2015 11:38 a.m.
Does it say enchantments? Wow! How did I not see that? I kinda want to make a deck with Blessed Spirits, Graceblade Artisan, some Lotus-Eye Mystics, and some Auras and Bestow creatures. And that.
Rayenous Thanks for clarifying that. So, they're just vanilla mechanics from here on out. Wonderful!

Sphinx's Tutelage - Alhammarret's Archive.
Expensive, but nice synergy
pay 5U, draw 2 discard 1, opponent mills 2 twice, repeats if 2 same color.

So equipment Ethereal Armor? Seems pretty cool i still like the armor more simply because when you put more than one on they get bonuses from each other. The equip is still a pretty decent card though.
June 25, 2015 11:43 a.m.
beakedbard It's a nice Standard replacement for now. Also worth mentioning, is that it doesn't go to the gy when the equipped creature dies like the Armor.

It makes want to make some random gimmick deck using both of them.

Serum Visions gets FNM promo (Doesn't fit MM2015 theme - WoTC), enemy pain lands in Origins (allied don't fit theme - WoTC). No more one mana dorks (too powerful - WoTC), BFZ has no enemy fetchlands (doesn't fit theme - WoTC)
Years later.... MM2017... Still no fetches, no serum visions reprints, no damnation reprint, birds of paradise becomes 50.00, modern prices across the board skyrocket. Serum visions becomes a modern 40.00 common. Speculators buy out more cards, artificial inflation everywhere, modern becomes equivalent to legacy prices, WoTC creates a new type like planeswalkers following a new rarity....
The apocalypse is nigh........!
P.S. This above is a farce... Or is it.... Welcome to the Twilight Zone
June 25, 2015 11:47 a.m.
Might Have to put the archive in my deck Revel in the glory. great synergy with Sphinx's Revelation!!!
June 25, 2015 11:48 a.m.
Yeah.
The trade-off's are.... doesn't count itself and no First Strike vs. does not die if the creature it is attached to leaves play.
Not sure which is better... I'd say for Bogles, it's probably still Ethereal Armor as you are expecting to rely on the Hexproof to keep the creature around anyway. - Perhaps the deck can find room for both, or a few of each. - I'm sure it will be well tested.

I sense the resurgence of End Hostilities with Origins and BFZ, but that Helm of the Gods and Angel both look really fun
June 25, 2015 11:52 a.m.
...The more I think of it, the more I realize that the likely helm won't see Modern play.
Essentially 2CMC for less effect than Ethereal Armor. - You will greatly prefer a faster start in that deck.
- T1 Bogle, T2 2x Enchantments... vs.
- T1 Bogle, T2 cast this and equip... but does nothing.
Seems really bad.

WovenNebula Are fetches not in BFZ? where did they say this?

WovenNebula says... #33
@awesomeguy37 at the end of my post I put what I wrote was a farce, it has some fact mixed in but BFZ may still have fetches. So far though this doesn't give us hope as the likely hood of having that many enemy lands is unlikely.

To be honest, I was expecting Scry land reprints, but this still keeps things balanced, I suppose.

Well, WOTC read my mind. I was thinking of making a Phage EDH deck, but there weren't enough ways for me to lose the game. My prayers have been answered!
June 25, 2015 1:33 p.m.
Pact looks like it could be standard defining, it kills things and creates card advantage all day long. Looks like a Midrange mirror breaker and possibly a tool to take control over the top
June 25, 2015 1:33 p.m.
I take it back I didn't read the "Chose one that hasn't been chosen" clause. That's terrible....

New legacy deck- Give away your pact the turn before you lose lol.

It's awesome. Mono-black can use as a finisher, and it breaks stalls in midrange so you can find win-cons or push through.
If you blink it, can you re-choose an option?

I hope someone lives the dream and uses Worst Fears on an opponent who plays this enchantment.

Now to create a standard deck using pact and either Daring Thief or Shifting Loyalties...
June 25, 2015 1:53 p.m.
I'm with chief, whyd they go with the exact same cycle they just printed?

Demonic Pact is a riff off the design for Consuming Contract, one of the finalists for the previous You Make the Card (it was beaten out by Waste Not). Glad they're using the idea, but I wish they'd give credit where credit is due. It's not a carbon-copy, but the "choose one you haven't chosen" along with the "you lose the game" choice? Totally not designed by Wizards :)
June 25, 2015 1:55 p.m. Edited.
Well, this is a neat mythic. Shifting Loyalties is what everyone's saying. I beg to differ! We could do something in Modern with Curse of the Cabal. I wanna do it! It won't work, but I wanna do it!

and the funny thing is this is the only type of land I don't have...
