MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!
TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

Oh man, I love it. So flavourful.
Probably overcosted though - at 1B it would be overpowered - 2B or BB seems about right though?
June 25, 2015 2:13 p.m.
o god, its so flavorful, but so Terrible! it puts you on a 4 turn clock to losing the game. Why oh Why? I love the angel though. It is OP. And YES! PAINLANDS ARE BEING REPRINTED!

SimicPower says... #4
I'm not sure why people are so surprised about Painland reprints. Checklands were printed M10-M13.
June 25, 2015 2:49 p.m.
Hmmmm... interesting that it abuses 's own inability to destroy Enchantments. - But it is easily remedied when combined with just about any other color(s).
Play it with Angel's Grace in Modern... Platinum Angel in EDH... any bounce, flicker, sac, destroy enchantment, donate, etc effect, and it becomes quite powerful.
Used with Starfield of Nyx in Standard, it may have a way to sac and recur for your choice of the 3 'non-lethal' effects every turn.
June 25, 2015 2:49 p.m.
@SimicPower - I'm not so much surprised at the printing of pain lands, as I am the non-printing of the rest of the pain lands.
After M13 they stated that they would always print a complete cycle of duals when printing them, rather than half cycles. - They've only disregarded that statement twice already... they had the opportunity to 'fix' the inconsistency and print the rest of the cycle in Origins (followed by enemy fetches in BfZ), but instead they simply reprinted what everyone already has.

Demonic Pact: Wizards, why!! Too good in some decks, too bad in most
June 25, 2015 2:55 p.m.
CanadianShinobi says... #8
I think we can officially say Wizards has gone insane and lost complete touch with the player base.

SimicPower they aren't surprised, just upset. They don't like painlands. Most people don't. But Shivan Reef getting printed twice in the past year means budget counterburn is much more viable on the kitchen table.

I will say that the basic lands spoiled so far are lovely :)
June 25, 2015 3 p.m.
Serum Visions isn't that great. The only reason it's played so much in Modern is because Preordain and Ponder are banned.

wait those basics aren't on mythic spoiler yet...

@Serendipitous_Hummingbird yes the reprints of cards such as Tower Geist, Elvish Visionary, Cobblebrute, Scrapskin Drake, etc. where spoiled with the 30 card intro packs a while back and are on mythic spoilers, the art being spoiled on the basic lands may be new.

Well, props on Twitter is better than nothing. I'm just glad they printed such an awesome idea.
June 25, 2015 3:25 p.m.
My EDH League wants to impose rules where you can't 'concede' without some sort of penalty...
Going to put 'Demonic Pact' in every black deck for those games where you end up 'locked-out' and can't win, but no one bothers to kill you.
June 25, 2015 3:43 p.m.
JaceArveduin says... #20
MinscAndBoo This, all of my this! I'm sure there are many enchantments you could abuse with Super Shark! The best thing is you can just keep repeating the same one over and over. BRB, putting that combo in an 8-rack shell cause I'm bad@modern...
Or, even more fun, put it in a standard Waste Not deck!
June 25, 2015 3:59 p.m.
How much I like Demonic Pact depends on whether blinking / bouncing it resets the choices you made or not. If it does, this is my new favorite card from this set. If it doesn't, then I'm not touching this thing until it becomes a junk mythic (which it will).
That said... for the millionth time, Wizards, BLACK ISN'T GREEN. BLACK CAN'T RAMP. STOP MAKING EVERY BLACK CARD COST UPWARDS OF 4 MANA. >_>
June 25, 2015 4:16 p.m.
CanadianShinobi says... #22
square711 Black is totally capable of ramping into more black. Not currently in Standard, but it is part of its identity in the colour wheel. Black is the Jack of All Trades colour in a lot of ways.
June 25, 2015 4:19 p.m.
Ragon_Wolfbane says... #23
square711, knowing Wizards they'd likely state that the choices will only reside with the card as it is on the field. If it returns to hand or blinked and leaves and then returns, then the choices should be reset. It'd just make sense. Then again wizards does make some strange calls.

Demonic Pact hit me right in the Johnnies, to steal a quote from someone else. I mean three turn (you lose on the upkeep of your forth turn, so really you only get three) clocks aren't exactly unheard of, so it feels like a desperate, last chance card...
Or a bad card. Probably bad. I think... I mean bounce in blue, destroy it in white and green and maybe it becomes ok. But that means you spent 6-7 mana over three turns to draw two, force discard, drain 4 (probably to kill a creature). That also means you have several dedicated cards slots to "don't get killed by my own spells" that have limited other value targets. I hear that's bad Magic.
Yeah, it's a build around me card to be certain. I want to... must resist the siren's call!
June 25, 2015 4:23 p.m.
Named_Tawyny says... #25
StuntmanTheThird - it's a four turn clock. You lose on the upkeep of your fifth turn if you're counting the turn you played it.
June 25, 2015 4:32 p.m.
CanadianShinobi: I'm a Modern player, and quite frankly, black ramp is pretty bad as far as Modern goes. Crypt Ghast sucks, Liliana of the Dark Realms sucks even harder, and I can't think of any other card that can fetch Swamps or speed up production and isn't slow as balls. In Legacy, sure, but not in Modern.
June 25, 2015 4:40 p.m.
NixTheThird says... #27
My bad Named_Tawyny, I forgot that you can't pick anything the turn you play it. So, enchantment which does absolutely nothing when it comes down, and kills you in four turns... I'm sad, but I'm going with it's not good.
Someone go prove me wrong.
June 25, 2015 4:50 p.m.
StuntmanTheThird ~ hit me in the johnnies too.
I'm gonna try but probably fail but it'll be fun for kitchen table if nothing else. Lol

HolyFalcon says... #29
It's good card, but it needs the right shell. cough cough mono black cough cough
June 25, 2015 5:02 p.m.
I don't think mono black is the right shell for this... black is the one color that can't deal with enchantments, after all. If a mono black deck drops this on the board, it's staying there until the game ends, one way or another.
U/B/x (possibly Esper?) control is where it's at, methinks. Let it go wild for 3 turns, then Cryptic Command it back into your hand while you counter something. Heh
June 25, 2015 5:10 p.m.
It needs white or blue so you can get rid of it or bounce it

beakedbard says... #32
Anyone else think its lame Bazaar Trader doesn't include enchantments?
June 25, 2015 5:21 p.m.
HolyFalcon says... #33
Late game finisher. Once your opponent is at like 10, drop that and it's GG.
June 25, 2015 5:34 p.m.
beakedbard - Not quite. Red can't deal with Enchantments, so it makes sense that you can't trade them. Also, how does a Bazaar trade in enchantments? They aren't physical!
June 25, 2015 5:35 p.m.
Welp, at least we have a new EDH staple in Alhammarret's Archive.
June 25, 2015 8:08 p.m.
Duress will be in standard and Thoughtseize everywhere else. As such, I don't think Demonic Pact is a good idea. All they have to do is take the flicker/enchantment destruction item out of your hand and basically tell you to get fucked.
I mean, sure, you could always draw another one but it seems way too risky.
June 25, 2015 8:13 p.m.
NoviceMagician says... #38
I think what a lot of people don't get is that you can just destroy/sac Demonic Pact before the last option becomes a problem. And who knows, depending on WOTC's rulings, we may be able to just blink it as some have mentioned.
Ugh, pain lands, again.
EDIT- Whoa! I was ninja'd!
June 25, 2015 8:13 p.m. Edited.
I don't think anyone's missed that you can try and get rid of it before the last option loses you the game. The issue is that it isn't hard to disrupt that from happening. It's like using land destruction to stop someone from paying for a Pact... but way, way easier.
June 25, 2015 8:15 p.m. Edited.
NoviceMagician says... #40
Sorry if I missed other people noticing it, I was too lazy to read through the pages of comments I missed. XD
I think disrupting it like you said is what is going to make it a poor choice in Modern. But I feel like it holds some potential in Standard at least.
Quick side note: Although I personally don't like Demonic Pact, I find it an interesting card. It reminds me of the win-before-turn-10-or-you-kill-yourself decks. I really like those deck kinds, they are very fun to play casually.
June 25, 2015 8:22 p.m.
Demonic Pact. Ugh. I was expecting better than an inevitable way to die. I had high hopes for the black mythic too... :(
June 25, 2015 8:27 p.m.
VampireArmy says... #43
The problem with it is it doesn't offer you anything that wins the game but requires you to basically lose the game.
On flavor since you're dealing with demons? Yeah probably. As a card though, not worth. Then again mythics aren't really intended to be the most playable anyways so eh.
June 25, 2015 8:37 p.m.
Phaetion - In large sets each color gets usually 3 mythics. So you have one more black mythic to look forward to.
And I also love all the flavour oozing out of Demonic Pact. Liliana made pacts with 4 demons, and there are 4 modes. SO MUCH FLAVOUR!
June 25, 2015 8:41 p.m.
That's the one redeeming value of Demonic Pact. As a vorthos, I like the card. As a player? Different story.
I'm guessing Blue will get another mythic. We'll wait and see what color only gets 2 mythics.
June 25, 2015 8:45 p.m.
I'm.... really liking W/g right now.
You've got three or four different good 2/1's for 1 in white right now including gideon, you've got Elvish Visionary and Satyr Wayfinder to push you to the midgame, or the new anafenza if you want, you've got Brimaz, Den Protector and the new Citadel Castellon as your three drops, you've got the new archangel and gideon's posse for your four drops, you've got wingmate roc for 5, and you've got a couple copies of Gods Willing and Become Immense as your spells. Seems like a lot of fun.

Forgot Dromoka's Command and Valorous Stance. Seems pretty dang decent.
JDMCRIB says... #1
MinscAndBoo in the twitter post they specifically mention that it was based off Consuming Contract.
Also, why did they print enemy pain lands. This probably means we won't be getting enemy fetches in BFZ either. Fml.
