MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!
TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

So I haven't seen anyone mention any of these three elves on here, but this shows 2 new ones and a reprint in Sylvan Messenger coming to Origins. Elf tribal will be sick (with CoCo support)

elves Gray Merchant of Asphodel looks amazing. Gb elves collected company for modern
June 26, 2015 11:23 a.m.
Standard gobos should be fun. T1 foundry street denizen into pile driver attack for two into rabble master attack for 9! Plenty of other sweet goblins, Dragon Fodder, Hordeling Outburst, Mardu Scout, Frenzied Goblin, Goblin Heelcutter, Jeering Instigator.
June 26, 2015 11:25 a.m.
Fuuuuuuuck I don't want to have to deal with Piledriver.
June 26, 2015 11:35 a.m.
you guys think CoCo goblins could be a thing in standard?

Rasta_Viking29 says... #16
CheeseBro not right now because of Hordeling Outburst and Dragon Fodder.

I really want "Gary the Elf" to become the official nickname. Gary will live on... with pointy ears!
Edit: But really it's closer to Fanatic of Mogis :/

As a legacy elves player, none if the elves really excite me (aside from visionary, but she's already used). I do think that Dwenyn's Elite will be used in modern elves as it's a great set up for chord of calling.
And I think Thalia's horse is gonna be very good, especially if you are on the draw. It means your opponent has to single target removal it or languish becomes turn 5. Super important in a white weenie deck in standard.
June 26, 2015 11:51 a.m.
Jesus. Collected Company just got its best target ever AND a good reason for people to run Abrupt Decay alongside it.

Well. That Piledriver reprint pretty much means I'll be splashing black in my control list now.
June 26, 2015 11:52 a.m.
Whoever said elfball WOULDN'T be in standard will be disappointed. The new elves look sick.
elves here I come. Sweet a standard deck I can actually build that won't cost me a ton of money.
EDIT: I know it's not ACTUALLY elfball but it's still really sick
June 26, 2015 11:58 a.m. Edited.
at least a fun casual combo is Mardu Ascendancy + Goblin Piledriver
June 26, 2015 11:59 a.m.
"Faboulus Pegasus" seems better than Brimaz in legacy D&T. Sure, Glowrider was never played, but this carries the Jitte way better. I like him alot actually, gonna try him out as a 2 of. What does you other LD&T playert think?

Chubbub unfortunately Foundry Street Denizen, Goblin Rabblemaster, Frenzied Goblin are all rotating out with Origins. That would be bonkers though if those three plus Goblin Piledriver were able to play together in standard.

So... Guys, I'm thinking we'll have a psuedo-D&T deck in standard... Pony and will make things difficult for people to do things, and all those nice white enchantments that make you want to destroy kittens, then add on the new Starfield card so you can swing lethal...
June 26, 2015 12:07 p.m.
actually Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor that's incorrect. All blocks stay for origins. They rotate in BFZ

StuntmanTheThird actually, seeing this is origins... maybe Gary was an elf before he became a zombie? :D
June 26, 2015 12:13 p.m.
I have a friend who runs Modern Goblins who will be insanely happy that Goblin Piledriver is being reprinted.
June 26, 2015 12:16 p.m.
Also, is no one talking about the new Djinn?
I know it won't be a Constructed Staple, but it's a sweet new card.

If only the Djinn didn't die to Strike, as a 3/4 it might have some hilarious implications with the other creatures like that.
June 26, 2015 12:27 p.m.
Goblins in Standard e'rry day all day, JakeHarlow.
Also Modern. Modern Goblins just got a HUGE boost.
June 26, 2015 12:30 p.m.
I'm actually excited for...
Early game it's 1-Drop mana dork... even if it is restricted in it's use.
Late game it makes every attacking Elf impossible to block safely.
Doesn't hurt that the pic makes me think of Ensnaring Bridge
June 26, 2015 12:30 p.m. Edited.
Dr. Manhatt- uh, Soulblade Djinn ain't bad. I'd like it more as a 3/4 for obvious reasons, but hey, prowess to everyone! Nice flavor text too.
June 26, 2015 12:30 p.m.
Didn't WotC just say that they were ditching the concept of 1-drop mana dorks? I mean really.
June 26, 2015 12:34 p.m.
JaceArveduin says... #39
Also guys, so far Black has a 1-drop mana dork while green does not, I call shenanigans.
June 26, 2015 12:34 p.m.
OtakulordAndrew says... #40
@Rayenous that's a relief I was worried for a bit that there wouldn't be a 1cmc lanowar elf for standard elves, sadly Wizards still intends to screw over most standard players who want a 1cmc mana accelerator though.

Minelia5, whaaa? Did not know that. That will be quite awesome then!
June 26, 2015 12:38 p.m.
Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor - If you're ever wondering what's legal in Standard you can always go here.
June 26, 2015 12:40 p.m.
6tennis I believe that Elvish Mystic-like cards are what they're trying to get rid of; 1-mana dorks with no drawbacks. I mean, look at the two in Origins. Honored Hierarch costs 1, but he starts to ramp on 3, albeit being a 2/2 vigilance when he starts (he's also rare, so not pulled too often in Limited). The Elf costs 1 and ramps on 2, but you lose a life and it can only be spent on Elves, which is pretty balanced if they want accelerants on turn 3 rather than turn 2.
June 26, 2015 12:41 p.m.
yeah Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor. I can't wait cause atm I already play mono-red aggro. :D This is gonna be great XD
June 26, 2015 12:42 p.m.
6tennis Yeah, I wouldn't bet on strictly no 1-mana dorks, but if they're printed they'll have drawbacks.
June 26, 2015 12:47 p.m.
JDMCRIB I just thought of this. Think of it this way: there are drawbacks, but also upsides. Hierarch becomes a 2/2 with vigilance, and the elf dude gives your elves deathtouch.
June 26, 2015 12:50 p.m.
Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor says... #48
Thanks JWiley129. That site is quite helpful as this new transition is rather confusing.
June 26, 2015 12:50 p.m.
6tennis The main problem they had with Elvish Mystic and co. is that they get out things too fast. I guess they wanted to slow things down, but give the dorks more value in the later game to make up for the slower early game.
June 26, 2015 12:53 p.m.
Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor - Except we aren't even at that point yet. This is the same as when M15 came out during RTR-Theros standard. The real confusing part will be when "Tears-Fears" comes out next Spring.

Also, the uncommon was spoiled in good quality in the Elves article:
Shaman of the Pack
Creature -- Elf Shaman
When ~ enters the battlefield, target opponent loses life equal to the number of Elves you control.
3/2
This guy is three mana.
