MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!
TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

New mulligan rule:
103.4. Each player draws a number of cards equal to his or her starting hand size, which is normally seven. (Some effects can modify a players starting hand size.) A player who is dissatisfied with his or her initial hand may take a mulligan. First, the starting player declares whether or not he or she will take a mulligan. Then each other player in turn order does the same. Once each player has made a declaration, all players who decided to take mulligans do so at the same time. To take a mulligan, a player shuffles his or her hand back into his or her library, then draws a new hand of one fewer cards than he or she had before. If a player kept his or her hand of cards, those cards become the players opening hand, and that player may not take any further mulligans. This process is then repeated until no player takes a mulligan. (Note that if a players hand size reaches zero cards, that player must keep that hand.) Then, beginning with the starting player and proceeding in turn order, any player whose opening hand has fewer cards than his or her starting hand size may scry 1.

What an amazing card, this is awsome. An artifact deck with Tolarian Academy and this is sweet.
June 29, 2015 10:46 a.m.
What better way to make Scry effing evereffinggreen than to write it into the damn rules. This is insane.
It makes mullganning much less painful. Magic players are precious things and need attention and care with featherdusters.
No matter what cards Origins brings, this will be the most impactful change the set brings.
June 29, 2015 10:51 a.m.
Although the rules change is interesting, please make another post for it... this thread is for Origins card spoilers.
June 29, 2015 10:52 a.m.
Never thought that change could happen, it really is a big way to get scry evergreen.

So I've been asking for Seismic Assault since devotion was spoiled. I think this guy is pretty sweet alternative.

Thopter Spy Network may be a little expensive for Affinity to reliably pull off, but that's the only place I can see it going.
And the new mulligan rule is awesome. You can even go down to 5 cards and still have a fair chance. Still not optimal, but not as painful.

I just hope we don't have to repeat ourselves to players at FNM/draft for the next month that the new rule doesn't take effect until after the Origins Pro Tour 07/31/15.

Maybe within the hour? But it's only 8am where the HQ is..I think?
June 29, 2015 11:02 a.m.
Actually, nevermind. Spy Network says "whenever one or more..." so you only get 1 extra card per combat. Which isn't worth it imo.

So they basically made all lands a scry land now. Wow. I'm really... wow.
June 29, 2015 11:03 a.m.
I like vortex in a rakdos 8rack type build. Don't have a Raven's Crime in your graveyard? Oh just a shock them with this instead and keep the hand down. Molten vortex and Dakmor Salvage could be gross together.

Oh my, WoTC decided to start this week off with a bang. Infinite Obliteration and Goblin Glory Chaser look amazing and super fun to play with. It is quite refreshing to see a new answer to Siege Rhino and CoCo decks arrive and the goblin is super fast and provides red aggro with evasion.
I feel the the Funeral Blade Predator is actually quite powerful as he survives most combat, almost always forces your opponent to block him and kills the blocker in the processes.
And wow to that rule change. Very interesting

So they're now enforcing a "standardized" layout when they big guys are playing on camera. I'm pretty sure this really only effects Adrian Sullivan.
June 29, 2015 11:17 a.m.
I don't like the card layout thing. Seems kind of.. Unnecessary? I put my library on the right, facing sideways (top of the cards facing my field) as if tapped, and put my graveyard adjacent under it, with my exile pile under my graveyard facing down (upside down in comparison to my untapped permanents). As I'm reading this, this would be not allowed in a video taped tournament match and it is "strongly encouraged" that I don't? What a load of bologna.
June 29, 2015 11:21 a.m.
I guess you could say, the glasses are...copied.
Nevermind, that one was shit.
Anyway, are they just going to keep throwing good EDH cards at us?

My standard izzet artifact deck got new toys...
I'm a happy man... *sheds tear
June 29, 2015 11:24 a.m.
Oh, so Obliteration can only hit creatures. Hadn't noticed that before. So much for replacing Slaughter Games. (the card is still good though)

Thopter Spy Network is (ironically, says Vorthos) best friends with Pia and Kiran Nalaar.
If only they weren't both 4cmc with 2 mana symbols.

I don't even care about the effect, look at that flavor text!
The effect is also great, if only it added "can't be countered" to the clause.
June 29, 2015 11:29 a.m.
Am I the only one that's excited for Displacement Wave?
Also, need those islands foiled
June 29, 2015 11:32 a.m. Edited.
Named_Tawyny says... #35
Lhurgyof, that graveyard thing is pretty much exactly the problem though - if you're keeping your exiled cards in the same stack as your graveyard, it's WAY too easy to 'accidentally' mix them up.

Dang it I saw that article and thought we're getting full art lands with this set!
June 29, 2015 11:33 a.m.
I guess if you're sloppy about it. Thankfully I keep them at 90 degree angles from one another so it's never a question which is which.
Not that I play in any tournaments, so I guess it doesn't matter.
June 29, 2015 11:35 a.m.
JaceArveduin says... #38
I knew it! They're re-using art on some of the lands!
addaff Probably, cause ewwww islands :P
Also, guys, if I'm thinking right, the Hellion's effect "mechanically" gives them double strike 1.
June 29, 2015 11:35 a.m.
Named_Tawyny says... #39
If you're sloppy or dishonest. It's very easy when, say, counting for delve, to subtly turn a card 90 degrees.
June 29, 2015 11:40 a.m.
Those goggles would be cooler if it wasn't restricted to red spells.

LhurgyofWhen you say facing down, do you mean upside down or face-down? I'm some poor uneducated guy who can't glimpse which it's supposed to be from your post.
June 29, 2015 11:50 a.m.
Upside down. I can understand with all of the recent rules troubles why they'd do it in a tournament environment, but I'll play the way I have been playing thank you, Wizards.

HolyFalcon says... #43
lol, mulligan rule won't be applied until AFTER PT Origins, after they decide if the rule is a good one, so it might not ever be used.

Lhurgyof If the cards were face-down, I'd be okay with it, but shit happens at card tables, and it's just too easy mess with if they just face a different direction. I mean hell, most of the time it's me being clumsy and bumping the table...
June 29, 2015 11:55 a.m.
@JaceArveduin - Exiled cards are supposed to be face-up (unless stated by the effect that exiled them that they should be face-down).
I have just as much of an issue with them being face down as I do having them in the same pile as the graveyard... even if they are @ 90 degrees.
June 29, 2015 noon
Named_Tawyny says... #46
@Rayenous, yup.
Personally, I have my library on my left (card tops facing me), my graveyard just south of them (ie closer to me), and my exile pile to the left of the library. Everything is in a neat bundle, and nothing is confusable.

The art from Vryn is amazing. I love the Innistrad swamps and Ravnica Islands, too. Kaladesh mountains are amazing, I might pick up the Kaladesh and Vryn lands for my stock of Basics I bring to limited events. Wow. Just wow. Did anyone else ever wish someone made a really high-end graphic role playing game in which you actually could discover the planes of Magic?
June 29, 2015 12:15 p.m.
JaceArveduin says... #49
Rayenous True, but between two evils I'll take that one. As is, I tend to play out like Tawyny does, but on the right side.
So do you guys think we'll get a Jaya Ballard card/reprint? Or is she just going to continue being Queen of Flavor Texts?
