MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!
TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

That Phalanx spell seems pretty awesome in EDH, at least for my Meta.

- Tap target creature
- Untap target creature
3/4
DISCUSS!
I think the red dude is fine as 2-of in aggro Jeskai, while the Mythic is more bulk than Ojutai Exemplars.

Woah woah woah woah woah...woah...woah!
Like, he doesn't even have to tap?
June 30, 2015 6:08 a.m.
He does not need to tap, otherwise, it would be stupid to give himself +1/+1.

With the exception of 1 forest, and 2 plains, I'm VERY impressed with the lands in Origins. VERY impressed. They look like something I would play if they had the old (pre-modern) border.

I'm from Germany and I'm quite convinced that this image has English text on it.
June 30, 2015 7:49 a.m.
Alpinisth - I wasn't talking about the red card. Here's the german one. Also, last time I checked Mage =/= Monk.
June 30, 2015 7:51 a.m. Edited.
So... as 2-Drop 2/1 with Prowess.
A second ability that give it's form of "exile a card and you may play it this turn" card advantage...
But without Haste, it's extra card - though able to trigger it's prowess - will be useless as it won't be attacking or blocking that turn.
Seems okay, but really could use Haste.
I mean... T2: drop this guy, and all you do is exile a card, you won't be able to play it... T3 there's a chance you could get a land or a 1 drop... but really, the best time for this is T4+, and I'd rather be playing Outpost Siege if I'm after card advantage.
June 30, 2015 7:54 a.m.
Rayenous - I think your assessment is right on, but how strong is it as just a 2/1 with Prowess for ? There I think it's fair, not Monastery Swiftspear good, but it's strong. Early game, assuming you're mono-red, it can "get rid of" an excess land and dig you deeper. Late game, it can "draw a card".

Holy Heck. If the student of the rings is that powerful, I can't wait to see what his Lord looks like.
(ba-dum-ching!)
June 30, 2015 8:02 a.m.
To increase the pun counter:
Student of the rings? More like Student of the Vryngs!
June 30, 2015 8:04 a.m.
So... I'm looking at the Mythic...
I can't help but think it's not a bad Control finisher.
It's not as good as Dragonlord Ojutai, but if you're not using , this has built in protection from removal spells, can deal a lot of damage, and can control the board state... you would have to have a fair number of spells in your yard before casting this, but I think it's well designed.
June 30, 2015 8:06 a.m.
What do you guys think about Scab Clan Berserker? Seems like it'll definitely be sweet in standard and could be good in modern burn, as a second eidolon.
June 30, 2015 8:07 a.m.
When student of the rings levels up somehow, does it become the lord of the rings??
June 30, 2015 8:10 a.m.
Well, not good enough for modern (3 drops that die to bolt without achieving anything are usually not very good), but standard...
This Berserker is a dollar bin rare with only growth potential, but only if there is a lot of control in the meta. Thunderbreak regent fulfills his role better for just 1 mana more.
June 30, 2015 8:10 a.m.
@JWiley129 - If you do it early game, it 'may' get rid of a land... but it's just as likely to get rid of a useful spell and make you draw a land. - Unless you scry'd and left on top beforehand you won't know... and if you did scry to top, it won't be a land... unless you intentionally left it there so you could safely cast this guy. - Seems like too much work to make sure you don't get rid of something useful just to use this guy.
And yes... late game, it can 'draw you a card'... but there is currently better plays for that.
I'm not saying he's bad... just not good. - They could have made it much better... as he is, I'd say he's probably only worthy of an Uncommon status... but he's Rare because 's card advantage should not occur on an rarity under Rare.

Rayenous, it's not just a control finisher, it's also an anti-control hoser - the thing is a beast.
It firebreathes, it protects itself, it untaps itself, it taps down attackers/blockers, and it's first ability can nearly soft-lock an opponent by itself (and can make for an interesting game of chicken).
If she resolves with adequate cards in the grave (which isn't tough with all the self-mill cards in standard right now) it's going to be very tough to remove once you untap with her.

The more I look at the Abbot, the more I think it should have been a 1RR, with 'until the end of your NEXT turn'
June 30, 2015 8:30 a.m.
@Named_Tawyny - I was thinking that it was probably originally a Mythic, and had "whenever ~ attacks", instead of "When ~ ETB".
June 30, 2015 8:38 a.m.
Rayenous: No red card advantage under rare? Meet Act on Impulse.
June 30, 2015 8:39 a.m.
@CheeseBro... - Yep. - You'll notice, I said should. - I was a little annoyed when I first saw that card.

Abbot is an agressive early creature that has value in the long game functioning as a cantrip of sorts. Looking to cast the free card early should not be a concern, at best you'll net a land. The red draw should just be viewed as extra value on an early drop keeping it from being irrelevant when top decked late.
Not sure if the card is worth playing. Ire Shaman is similar and it never ends up making my lists.
June 30, 2015 9:18 a.m.
So, I got half of it right. I called it (a blue mythic other than Jace/Day's). And I admit I got the Scry wrong. That said, it's a cool card, but not in my interests.

I'm pretty sure Abbot is intended to be a red Snapcaster Mage.
June 30, 2015 9:43 a.m.
A 2/1 Prowess that isn't irrelevant as a late game topdeck doesn't sound bad. Maybe not rare-worthy, but very certainly not bad.
As for Berserker vs Thunderbreak Regent, well, por que no los dos?
June 30, 2015 9:49 a.m.
@xcn: both could be good, but i think Thunderbreak Regent is great in mainboard, while i think the berserker is more sideboard material against control.
@pumpkinwavy: No way was the abbot a red Snapcaster Mage. No WAY.

Most probably, we will have seen the last card from the set by friday this week.

I hope we get lots of mothership spoilers today. Yesterday was.... dissapointing.

Sweet! Loving the animists awakening and talent of the telepath, but i dont like mr demon guy

Wow, that Animist's Awakening seems like an auto-include in Amulet Bloom decks!
June 30, 2015 10:49 a.m.
I was thinking more Scapeshift decks, than Amulet Bloom... but both could see a home for it.

CheeseBro Well, a "fixed" Snapcaster Mage. Wizards, or somebody important has said that snappy was a mistake, should have been red and not had flash. And since flashback isn't a thing in origins, it gets the exile until end of turn thing instead. Not saying the power level is anywhere close.
June 30, 2015 10:52 a.m.
Animist's awakening is one hell of a ramp card. It has run me in all nissa decks written all over it
June 30, 2015 10:52 a.m.
I'm also liking how Awakening can untap your Scry lands when they enter the battlefield from this... and you still get scry triggers.
