MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!

TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

Anyone have any thoughts on Jace's Sanctum? It seems like it could really work in UR Storm, no?

JWiley129 says... #2

formayor - It's too expensive for UR Storm. If it cost it would be closer, but is WAY too much mana.

June 30, 2015 3:20 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #3

They already have:

Pyromancer Ascension : Game winning at two less mana. Not that hard to activate

Goblin Electromancer: 2 less mana, helps reduce needed storm count by turning sideways

and Past in Flames : Game winning on the spot usually. Only runs like 1-2 of these anyways.

June 30, 2015 3:26 p.m.

I don't disagree with those points, but keep in mind:

-Storm packs enough rituals to potentially cast it early. If you can run Past in Flames, why not this? I get that there's a difference in the order things need to happen, but there are also Storm types that set up with Gifts Ungiven.

-It is far less easily removed than Goblin Electromancer, which gets used as a pseudo-sorcery anyway, but it's still a useful difference. It also dodges Abrupt Decay and Inquisition of Kozilek.

-The additional scry action should really help filter the deck once you're going off, so it will be much easier to find your Past in Flames, meaning that using rituals to cast it will be less painful, because you're more likely to re-use them with flashback.

I'm not saying it automatically fits into Storm, but I think there's some potential to build around it. The scrying should mean that you could run a few more cantrips, and slightly fewer engines, which could make it a bit better against Thoughtseize, and improve staring hands.

Jace's Sanctum is not a card you want to cast when you're going off, you want to cast it before you go off. The only time I want to cast a spell with a CMC >3 in Storm before turn 3 is if I chain 3 Rituals together into an Empty the Warrens. Jace's Sanctum doesn't do enough on its own to justify a spot.

Seems like we're getting a lot of Thopters lately. Possibly UR Ensoul?

square711 says... #7

Another 4B sorcery... sigh I'll admit it's not bad, though.

That new artifact is sweet. Wurmcoil Engine replacement for budget Tron, anyone?

June 30, 2015 4:13 p.m.

Absolutely true JWiley129, I realize that a 4-drop can't necessarily just drop into any Modern build. I was thinking more about building a deck that would be better at storming in waves over multiple turns, abusing both Empty the Warrens and Young Pyromancer as mainboard cards.

Modern Affinity is getting a new toy to mess around with.

Any thoughts on whether the new Ring person will see modern play? There is a reference here, because Morphling and Aetherling both end with -ling and Ring ends with... ring. May the -ing endings continue.

June 30, 2015 4:21 p.m.

Bellock86 says... #10

Haven't seen the new artifact yet. I'm using mythic spoiler and mtg. Is it elsewhere?

June 30, 2015 4:52 p.m.

Bellock86 says... #11

Or are you referencing the new walker thing square711?

June 30, 2015 4:54 p.m.

square711 says... #12

Yeah, I made it sound like it was a noncreature artifact, but I was talking about the walker.

June 30, 2015 5:22 p.m.

NotaNetDeck says... #13

Almost positive Hangarback Walker won't see Modern play.

Affinity, running as few lands as it does, always wants to cast it for X=1 (or 0 if Master of Etherium or similar is online). For X=1, it's just a worse Doomed Traveler. I like the idea but I don't think it's a strong enough card.

June 30, 2015 6:37 p.m.

NotaNetDeck says... #14

Unless you spend a bunch of turns pumping it, that is.

June 30, 2015 6:38 p.m.

Back on the topic of Jace's Sanctum... every U/R-based EDH deck in existence need to run this card. For real.

June 30, 2015 6:40 p.m.

6tennis says... #16

Could see play in Talrand and Melek, most notably. Maybe even in Jace EDH. Actually, it has amazing synergy with Jace. Sweet!

June 30, 2015 6:48 p.m.

tooTimid says... #17

I wish it was something control was interested in for standard, but a 4 mana enchantment with no immediate impact on the board seems hard to justify.

June 30, 2015 6:59 p.m.

6tennis it's already got a slot in the Melek deck I'm building (won't link because forum reasons). as soon as it was spoiled, it took Arcane Melee's spot because it's almost strictly better.

June 30, 2015 7 p.m.

JakeHarlow says... #19

Why not use both?

June 30, 2015 7:02 p.m.

NotaNetDeck says... #20

canterlotguardian, don't forget Arcane Melee helps all players.

June 30, 2015 7:05 p.m.

Most of the time, I've found that the reduced cost for my opponents didn't really hurt me that much. That being said, Melee doesn't let you scry whenever you cast an instant or sorcery, so pretty much it's going to be replaced regardless. I may add Melee back if I find I'm still not casting my instants and sorceries as effectively as I'd like, but for now it's out.

June 30, 2015 7:08 p.m.

NotaNetDeck says... #22

Nevermind, somehow I misunderstood what you were saying was better. Oh, reading comprehension, why do you do this...

June 30, 2015 7:12 p.m.

It was also partially my fault for the way I worded it. No worries. :)

Managorger Hydra, Elemental Bond, Woodland Bellower, Gea's Revenge, Animist's Awakening, Nissa, Rhox Maulers... and now that thing? My timmy sense is tingling! I'll play the shit out of Green in my two prereleases.

JWiley129 says... #34

I'm pretty sure that all non-burn based removal hits the giant though. I don't see him making a huge splash in Standard, but a 6/6 for 5 is quite large and in charge.

June 30, 2015 7:34 p.m.

hey guys. this with Mayael the Anima in EDH.

June 30, 2015 7:35 p.m.

JANKYARD_DOG says... #36

Outland Colossus in a outlast/counter deck. Pop a counter on him, trample through and 12/12+ (assuming you've moved a counter or spell for trample).Even 5cmc for 6/6 alone isn't bad.

June 30, 2015 7:35 p.m.

any way to give this guy double strike?

Was there any Deathtouch spoiled so far? I found all the Deathtouch in the Tarkir-Block kind of annoying, and I like that there was little (to none, I can't remember any other than that black rare) of it so far. A big fat dumb creature is supposed to be a big fat dumb creature and not chump-blocked to death by a 1/1 rat.

June 30, 2015 7:40 p.m. Edited.

JohnnyBaggins says... #41

There's also Berserkers' Onslaught. I do, however, think that making it have trample is a lot more relevant.

Also, I want full art versions of these lands.enter image description hereenter image description hereenter image description here

We could get greedy and have both.

I also want full arts of those lands. And foils...

Renown 6. It has RENOWN SIX. IT BECOMES A FRIGGIN 12/12. AND IT'S HARD AS FUCK TO BLOCK.

I want to buy dozens of copies of this card just so I can shred them.

June 30, 2015 7:48 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #44

Colossus is cool it's no Kalonian Hydra though!

Hangarback Walker is frankly pretty terrible in most constructed formats outside of maybe edh (Doubling Season and animar anyone?).

I guess its fun with Hardened Scales in standard but I'm not sure how viable that is (t1, scales, t2 hangarback as a bear, each subsequent turn, hangarback gets +2/+2).

It really shines in limited. It's a threat that can be played in any deck at any point in the game that constantly becomes more of a threat. I choose Hangarback Walker as my prerelease color :p

June 30, 2015 8:33 p.m.

I think Hangarback Walker has potential when run with Hardened Scales and Evolutionary Leap. Pump it fast and then sac it for another + thopters. Not sure how stable it will be until I can test it, but I have hope haha.

June 30, 2015 9:04 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #47

Why would you bother to sac it if you could just turn sideways with it until they are forced to deal?

June 30, 2015 9:06 p.m.

FancyFish says... #48

Gruul Emrakul Rush Evolutionary leap has modern potential?

June 30, 2015 9:11 p.m.

5 mana for 6/6 with the potential to become 12/12? GG Mono-Green

Also Renowned Weaponsmith from the last set play nicely with Hangarback Walker

June 30, 2015 9:15 p.m.

JANKYARD_DOG says... #50

Hangarback would be amazing if it had vigilence. Swing, save for block, then tap to add counter.
