MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!

TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

JUDGE!!!!

Does Day's Undoing work with Sphinx's Tutelage? I can't figure out if Days undoing exiles itself after it resolves or as it's on the stack, and if the turn ends AFTER you draw seven, or AS you draw seven.

aaaaand rules question bro. Should be taken that to the QnA. I've read elsewhere that it does trigger it on cleanup

Sorry, I think Lord of the Rings (Trademark) and Timetwister made me go off topic. Carry on!

July 2, 2015 4:52 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #5

I figured it out. It's "draw one, trigger sphinx" and repeat six more times. Then, exile days undoing, as well as the seven triggers, and it doesn't work. Rats.

Well in standard.

Thank you Rasta_Viking29.

As much as I agree with the modern stuff ppl are talking about, spoilers only here please.

And that note, my dear sweet fluffy Jesus mono white looks beast.

So does mono green for that matter

Brimaz is at an all time low at like $10. Prob will be back up to $15 a few months after rotation

July 2, 2015 4:57 p.m.

Bellock86 says... #8

kyuuri117 ~ you really think Brimaz, King of Oreskos will get back to that after he rotates? Do tell as I'm curious what brought you to that conclusion. (Newbie to modern and know very little)

Not doubting. Just wanna know

kyuuri117 says... #9

He's tossed around in zoo in modern as well as stoneblade decks in legacy. Not fantastic but sometimes you just can't remove him if you aren't expecting him, and then he's really good.

Especially against like, rug delver. No decay and no swords to plowshares.

I can't wait!!

I want to know if we are getting any slivers in this set.

July 2, 2015 5:48 p.m.

abenz419 says... #16

there will be no slivers. They wanted to make slivers a thing in M14 but that didn't really happen. This is essentially the only reason they printed slivers in M15. For the short couple months that M14 and M15 were legal it made slivers an actual possiblity and gave the people who wanted to play slivers after M14 one last chance to put together a viable deck before M14 rotated out. Since they wanted to make slivers a "thing" in M14 and were forced to print more in M15 because they didn't accomplish what they originally wanted, I doubt we'll see slivers for the 3rd straight core set. Especially since they don't seem to have a place in any of the Origins story lines for the 5 planeswalkers (what the set is designed around).

There will be a new rule once origins is released so once day's undoing is cast on your turn the turn is over no triggers will occur

Wiktul says... #19

Ok, that's interesting:

Calculated Dismissal

Calculated Dismissal

Instant

Counter target spell unless it's controller pays

Spell mastery - If there are two or more instant and/or sorcery cards in your graveyard, scry 2

July 2, 2015 8:19 p.m.

IvoryFrost says... #20

and it's common?

Wow!

July 2, 2015 8:22 p.m.

saj0219 says... #21

Pay one more mana for Mana Leak and possibly get to scry 2 as well? Seems... Not bad. Not bad at all.

HolyFalcon says... #22

Calculated Dismissal in control SB against aggro?

July 2, 2015 8:49 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #23

I don't like it, it's strictly worse than cancel. Anything at three mana, at any rarity, should counter a spell no matter what. Yea, it's not double blue, but it's still not a bargain. Stick with dissolve until they rip it from your cold, dead, fingers.

July 2, 2015 8:50 p.m.

6tennis says... #24

Disregard this idiotic comment.

July 2, 2015 8:51 p.m. Edited.

HolyFalcon says... #25

Yeah, I guess Dissolve also lets you scry. Might be the teeniest bit better in 3c control just for more consistent t3 counters.

July 2, 2015 8:52 p.m.

kengiczar says... #26

For a second I thought it was going to say if you have spell mastery just straight up counter. That would have been pretty nice...

July 2, 2015 8:54 p.m.

HolyFalcon says... #27

Countermagic

Counter target spell unless it's controller pays .

Spell Mastery-- If there are two or more instant/sorcery cards in your graveyard, counter that spell instead.

July 2, 2015 8:57 p.m.

6tennis says... #28

Just as we start talking about how great a hard counter would be.

DISREGARD THIS IDIOTIC COMMENT.

Bellock86 says... #30

kyuuri117 ~ thank you for explaining. Makes sense. Guys annoying. Lol.

I actually like the new counterspell. Replaces Dissolve as the 3 drop counter post rotation. Yeah conditional counter stinks but as a control player who hates the mirror match conditional is fine with me.

Another thing to remember is that Disdainful Stroke will still be legal post rotation and hits most of the things you're worried about AFTER the new counter is less effective in the late game when they have extra mana. Like a certain Lightning Helix on a 4/5 trampling rhino I've come to loathe immensely.

Sure it's not a perfect counter but blue does tend to get a lot of goodies quite often.

so what cards in these sets do we think will change standard other than some of the creature planeswalkers? I'm thinking Languish, Infinite Obliteration, Day's Undoing (possibly not standard, definitely modern), and Starfield of Nyx (budget enchantments I expect). I'm sure there are a lot I skipped over, so feel free to mention them :D

July 3, 2015 7:39 a.m.

IvoryFrost says... #36

I don't think it will change anything right away but Starfield of Nyx has potential to be fun.

I'm thinking if there are ways to discard cards/your hand into your graveyard and then using its ability to get high cost enchantment/ enchantment creatures onto the battlefield, without paying their mana cost.

There are all those enchantment creatures where their abilities are "your creatures have X, your opponent's creatures lose X" But their mana cost are incredibly high.

3 Infinite Obliteration in esper control. Erebos's Titan will change standard against control. Also, Nissa's Revelation in commander?

July 3, 2015 10:59 a.m.

1 drop with 1/2 body is great, and it has pseudo-Mardu Shadowspear effect. Elves are really shaping up in standard

Also here's the rest of the nonbasic land:

Nothing interesting, huh?

July 3, 2015 11:07 a.m.

Both that elf and counter look pretty good. I am also very intrigued by Sword of the Animist for ramp:Cost: 2(colorless)

Equip: 2(colorless)

"Equiped creature gets +1/+1

Whenever equiped creature attacks, you may search your library for a basic land card and put it onto the battlefield tapped"

Seems potentially useful!

I like the Thunderclap Wyvern and Iroas Champion. I can see Skaab in EDH.

July 3, 2015 11:44 a.m.

Well Skaab Goliath is back at uncommon, blue tempo decks are certainly going to be entertaining to draft. Also blue white flyer decks in draft can rejoice at their dual color uncommon of thunderclap wyvern.

July 3, 2015 11:47 a.m.

IvoryFrost says... #50

I'm loving the artwork and colours on Thunderclap Wyvern
