MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!
TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

DarkLaw.... there's numerous top tier decks that win turn 3-6 np. Ad Naseum/5color Hermit Druid/Azami/Sharuum/Arcum/Teferi/Niv Mizzet/Oona/Oath of Druids
Basically who ever goes off first in this deck just goes off. Cut-throat is cut-throat. Ad Naseum doesn't care what you are doing. Hermit Druid doesn't care what you are doing. Arcum doesn't care what you are doing. Niv Mizzet doesn't care what you are doing. Oath of druids doesn't care what you are doing. They all consistently win around that period of time. I even saw a beast Martin Stromgald deck that wins on turn 5 np.... through combat dmg.. his deck also has 2-3 grand into it.

So, now that everything has been spoiled can we discuss patterns and what not that can be used in say pre-release and drafts maybe? Do's and dont's?

Go talk to ChiefBell about that Mj3913, I think he has something running about a pre-release assessment.
July 6, 2015 8:35 p.m.
@Emarean - Wizards have a tendency to never reveal the list. From Red I would expect the two Enchantments (Molten Vortex and Flameshadow Conjuring) NOT to be available as pre-release promos.
In case you weren't aware it was stated in the Pre-release primer that the promo is one of 7 Rares or the Planeswalker in the colour you choose.
In white I would say all but Hallowed Moonlight and Sigil of the Empty Throne.

...Just noticed all of the "Lore based PW ability" spells I included are Spellmastery spells. - Interesting.

Yeah, Spell Mastery is a 15 card vertical/horizontal cycle. It's a common, uncommon, and rare in each of the five colours depicting the 'walkers pre-spark, post-spark, and presently.
It's really neat.
July 7, 2015 11:48 a.m.
@KillTheIslandUser Why would you want to kill an island user? Just because they play counters :/
July 7, 2015 1:55 p.m.
KillTheIslandUser says... #12
If counters were the only thing blue players had.... then I wouldn't care. That being said, I mostly play blue or black in magic. Counters are hardly worth caring about. It's the other 10000000000 ways of control from blue.
Blue has ramp, lots of tutors, some of the easiest ways to go infinite in just it's colors alone and with no artifacts, card draw for days, easy ways to cheat shit into play. Etc etc. Blue has so much utility that it doesn't matter about counters. While counters are nice, if you rid counters from blue, you'd still have stupid utility, and control aspects that create ridiculous board advantage.

are there decklists for the event deck/clash pack, intro packs, deckbuilder's toolkit, etc?
July 7, 2015 5:35 p.m.
Rayenous That is a great list. I think your predictions are pretty close if not spot on. I think we can safely say that the Intro deck rares will be on the list of possible promos. one of the promotional videos showed that Outland Colossus is one of the promos.
I guess all we can do now is wait until pre-release starts and people start posting what the promos are.

@seuvius
lol the ramp was more of a joke, but that's hard to read through text... High Tide and Omniscience and Palinchron + Deadeye Navigator best ramp lol

@KillTheIslandUser Mental Misstep your High Tide. The joy of blue.
July 8, 2015 4:12 p.m.
KillTheIslandUser says... #20
High Tide is used in legacy, and Mental Misstep is banned in legacy.

thenba2kgod, that's why it's so good. You wipe the other side of the board, and your Rhinos and Tasigur are still around and kicking.

I'm throughly disappointed that there weren't any purple cards in this set either...
I mean come on, haven't we been waiting long enough?
XD

I know I was making a joke :pNamed_Tawyny it is what I'm most looking forward to in the set. Bye bye Crux of Fate
July 8, 2015 9:37 p.m.
NoviceMagician: your referring to Red-blue cards correct?
July 9, 2015 3:12 a.m.
snotice purple was a color they were going to do in planar chaos but it didn't work out so they scrapped the idea. Some players are hoping and waiting for it to happen but I doubt it will.
July 9, 2015 3:28 a.m.
Purple would have been unique yes but they wont do is as it will create a mechanic that interacts only with the set it was printed in, which they have already done and announced it as a failure (Kamigawa block)

Not sure why this popped into my head, but from the "It'll never actually happen department", vs Twin
STP: Aura on my Deceiver Exarch, make 1000 copiies
Other Player: Before combat. Quicken The Great Aurora, draw 1002 cards. Boom.

And the entire reason they don't want to use protection as much anymore is the same reason they won't reprint storm again or anything like the eggs combo. It promotes an uninteractive game, and if you've ever played a storm deck that won on turn 1 you know how darn boring those are. As it was once described by a friend, storm is just a playing "sitting in a corner jerking off for a while till they finish". WOTC hates when the game doesn't have interaction, and when the cards have things like protection it basically gives the middle finger to any deck that may be running those colors.
Imagine if they kept printing tons of protection, in like a couple years you could have entire decks that can't be interacted with, and that would make for a terrible metagame. All the mechanics they're getting rid of are to make way for games where players can react and respond to the other player. It's the reason they don't want counter spells to be too strong because then it's just a game where it's draw, go, counter, go and literally nothing happens for ten minutes. Making protection a limited use mechanic is a good choice as it will provide for more interesting cards. It's almost barely is at all due to complexity, but rather to promote a meta more in line with what WOTC thinks is healthier and more fun.

KillTheIslandUser black has just as much ramp with dark rituals, green has things like fastbond, and red also has rituals. White is the only color I'm blanking on ramp for. So high tides really isn't that broken compared to all other legacy ramp, hence why none of those will be reprinted in a way that puts them in standard or modern.
July 9, 2015 11:46 a.m.
if they fix the whole soulshift thing I'm game for kamigawa. Also don't waste card slots on these stupid things: Genju of the Cedars, Genju of the Falls, Genju of the Fens, Genju of the Fields, Genju of the Spires.
If they redid Kamigawa and were reprinting those I wouldn't buy the block unless it had something as good as Sword of Feast and Famine / Sword of Light and Shadow to make up for the money I'd be wasting purchasing packs only to get some 50 cent rare and a Genju.

So are we ever gonna get those last 10 cards added? We've had the whole spoiler for a while now and I wanna goldfish RU thopters.
July 9, 2015 11:53 a.m.
PancakeMisery says... #36
kengiczar I loved the ideas of Kamigawa, the mechanics weren't the problem, the power level was.I wish WOTC realized that people liked the idea if the cards weren't all horribly overcosted or just useless.
July 9, 2015 12:07 p.m.
Serendipitous_Hummingbird says... #37
never forget that kamigawa actually gave some of the most nonland staples of any modern set. Or any set for that matter.
These all see staple play in modern and legacy.
And none of them are lands.
July 9, 2015 12:48 p.m.
Imagine modern without those, Serendipitous_Hummingbird.
July 9, 2015 12:50 p.m.
@KillTheIslandUser Not specifying the format before I say that is no excuse to then say "It's legacy" and assume your argument is still valid. You assumed it was legacy. I assumed it was casual. And can't somebody have a joke?
Intro packs and clash pack have been leaked. Dromoka's Command, Dromoka, the Eternal, Siege Rhino (yes!!!!!) and Windswept Heath are here. Everyone prepare for the buying.
July 9, 2015 1:18 p.m.
Named_Tawyny says... #40
Between Windswept Heath and Collected Company you've pretty much got the value of the Clash Pack right there. Siege Rhino and Dromoka's Command are gravy.
July 9, 2015 1:40 p.m.
omfg. This clash pack is beyond belief! It's better than Jace vs. Vraska! AND THAT ONE HAD REMAND! I want 2 of these to complete my collected company, dromoka's command, and siege rhino playset! This is saweet! Oh, and don't forget that windswept heath. LOL!

PancakeMiseryYou should read things thoroughly next time... as I clearly stated it was a joke.
DarkLaw you shouldn't take things so seriously, or to heart. I think you weren't trying to joke, but now are upset and didn't realize I was messing around hence with legacy only. So for you to assume I wasn't joking, or that you I didn't know you were joking.. come on now.
July 9, 2015 5:02 p.m.
I think harbinger of tides might be the 2nd best card. Might help u devotion get a last hurrah and transports to modern.
July 9, 2015 6:32 p.m.
@KillTheIslandUser I assumed we were both joking :p
Harbinger seems good in merfolk. Why not?
