MaRo's article got spoiled early, so we have some SPICY Previews with "new" mechanics!

TL;DR: Menace is replacing Intimidate & Landwalk, Prowess is now evergreen primary in Blue secondary in Red and maybe tertiary in White, and Protection is now deciduous used only as necessary.

I, for one, am conflicted about Nissa.

On the one hand I HATE Nissa as a character. She's racist, brash, and stupid.

On the other hand her abilities as a planeswalker are usually really good.

I wonder if her flip trigger will be something like "Whenever you play your second land for turn flip Nissa, Elf Nazi"

Spencerbot15 says... #2

No, because then she would be almost impossible to flip and this seems like a mono-colored set so they don't want evolving wilds...

I think that we are seeing a lot of bulk garbage that every set has that makes a set playable in limited. My only real issue with what we have seen so far is the flavor. i was hoping that all of the cards would have really deep flavor text to help tell the story. i mean 5 walkers and 10 planes to cover is a lot. Every card really needs to be heavy handed in flavor to make that work IMO.

Not that hard actually, kiora is a thing. Also, a simple Explore reprint (which, I'll remind you, was also printed in the Zen block) would solve that.

Ohthenoises just wanted to say you made my day with your "Nissa, Elf Nazi" comment. :D

Getting 2 land into play on the same turn is VERY easy with fetches.

June 10, 2015 8:21 a.m.

Ohthenoises says... #7

It's important to distinguish between a land ETB and playing a second land.

Fetching would be too easy but having a Explore be reprinted would be just fine.

June 10, 2015 8:30 a.m.

Rayenous says... #8

Having a Creature/Walker transformation that relies on 1 specific other card from the set... yeah, she'd never transform.

June 10, 2015 8:57 a.m.

Ohthenoises says... #9

There are other options other than just explore -.-

I was simply using them as an example.

Oracle of Mul Daya, Kiora, the Crashing Wave, Explore, Exploration, etc.

There's also the option that she has the ability to give a Oracle of Mul Daya effect on her own.

It's really not that hard.....

June 10, 2015 9:07 a.m.

Rayenous says... #10

Sure... for Modern, she's be easy to flip.

For standard, they would have to print a long list of supporting cards (unless she gives that ability... but then she'd be too easy to transform). For Limited, you'd have to prioritize picking Ramp options (of the type of 'you may play an extra land') over removal and creatures.

Besides, from a flavour stand point (though I don't know her background that well), I doubt she ignited her spark by having extra sources of mana... I would assume it will have something to do with Elves, or destruction of land... or even better... land dealing damage.

Speculation:

Nissa, Enticer of Land

: Target land you control becomes a 3/3 creature until the end of turn. It is still a land.

Whenever a land you control deals damage to an opponent, exile Nissa, Enticer of Land, then return her to the battlefield transformed under her owners control

2/4

Didn't Nissa only get the power of land after the eldrazi were released?

Lhurgyof says... #12

Does anybody have a source to the article saying that they're not going to be using these abilities any more? I could care less about intimidate, but protection? I get that it's strong but I feel like it has its place in Magic.

June 10, 2015 10:47 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #13

Lhurgyof - I put a link in the original posting, you'll find the relevant information at the bottom of the article.

June 10, 2015 10:51 a.m.

Rayenous says... #14

@Lhurgyof

It's at the bottom of the page linked in the original post.

Protection isn't actually being completely removed. It's just being removed from 'evergreen' list. - Meaning that they will no longer be using it as a common ability. They will only be using it if it strongly supports a theme.

June 10, 2015 10:52 a.m.

Except that kiora is leaving standard wen that pack comes out

June 10, 2015 11:25 a.m.

Ohthenoises says... #16

That "pack" will still be in standard until Battle for Zendikar.

June 10, 2015 11:26 a.m.

Theors leaves in august

June 10, 2015 11:45 a.m.

JaceArveduin says... #18

kengiczarWe don't want that! I realized MLP actually had a card game and went to figure out how you'd play a game, without fighting I assumed, and couldn't figure it out...

It'll make Protection less common, which makes me sad, but I can see why they do it when I play my protection deck against Burn and it goes Soldier of the Pantheon, Kor Firewalker, Fiendslayer Paladin.

June 10, 2015 11:45 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #19

IndepenentMeta - No it doesn't. Theros wont leave with the core set, itll leave with return to zendikar.

Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh

Well, they've not released the actual card yet, but it's looking more and more that the 'confirmed fake' spoiler of Chandra might be legit. Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh (with the same artwork) is the wallpaper available today on the Wizards site.

Doesn't mean that the abilities are correct, but looks like we can confirm the card itself.

kyuuri117 says... #21

Nissa's hopefully going to be something like, 3/4 trample for 1GG, whenever nissa deals combat damage to a player, flip her. Otherwise it's going to be something horribly unplayable.

June 10, 2015 1:05 p.m.

Or nissa could maybe be something based around elf tribal maybe a functional reprint of Elvish Archdruid with the ability to flip to a planeswalker if you control 4 or more elves.

June 10, 2015 1:21 p.m.

I really hope Nissa is something for elves, like OtakulordAndrew suggested

June 10, 2015 1:23 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #24

Unfortunately, Nissa is no longer an Elf Planeswalker but an Elemental Planeswalker.

June 10, 2015 1:25 p.m.

@JWiley129 however she was in her original card of Nissa Revane and this is about the planeswalkers' origins so maybe we will get another elf based nissa.

June 10, 2015 1:32 p.m.

Rayenous says... #26

While true that Nissa is strongly affiliated with Elementals, she is still an Elf.

In the case of Origins, she would definitely be an Elf prior to her spark igniting, and likely still Elf afterwards.

The only Lore I can find on her simply stated that "her spark ignited at a young age"... nothing around the events leading up to her spark igniting. - As it was during a time where she was being trained within her Warrior Tribe of Joraga, it may have something to do with Elves... "Whenever you attack with 2 or more elves?"... "Tap 3 elves you control:...?"..., "If an elf you control dies?"... who knows.

I hope not though. - I prefer PWs that aren't as limited in use. (See: Nissa Revane... must use with elves, and must use a specific elf card for best effect.)

June 10, 2015 1:35 p.m.

Oh yeah I forgot origins was a core set my bad guys

June 10, 2015 1:42 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #28

Are we not getting spoilers every day?

June 10, 2015 3:57 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #29

kyuuri117 - Spoilers for Origins won't start until two weeks from now. They just showed us a few cards b/c of the new evergreen mechanics and the 30 card intro deck lists were being put up.

Darthagnon says... #30

Hang on, isn't Infernal Scarring pretty much Skullclamp all over again?

June 10, 2015 6:14 p.m.

JakeHarlow says... #31

Lmfao Darthagnon. Yeah, that must be it!

June 10, 2015 6:19 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #32

....sigh.

June 10, 2015 6:21 p.m.

iLikeDirt says... #33

Far from it Darthagnon, the issue with Skullclamp was that it was an equipment that stayed in play after the creature dies. That enchantment leaves with the creature and still leaves you -1 card.

June 10, 2015 6:23 p.m.

lol. Infernal Scarring is Skullclamp. Illuminati confirmed amirite?

June 10, 2015 9:02 p.m.

Minelia5 says... #35

technically, this would be op if it had Rancor's bounce ability. Then it would just be a bomb in standard. But yeah really it's just a 2 mana +2/+0 where you make up the card when the guy dies. :P oh well.

June 10, 2015 9:18 p.m.

Minelia5 says... #36

who thinks the 2 mana white +1/+1 enchantment with the tap ability is pretty cool? I don't think it's half bad. I just don't think there's anything you could really do with it lol.

June 10, 2015 9:24 p.m.

Jeyrrick says... #37

I kind of like how white has a bit of a tappy tappy theme going on. I am really curious if we will see more tap synergies in white... maybe a reprint of Gideon's Avenger?

In other news, apparently there has been a leak for the white Intro Pack rare, who happens to be a legendary for you commander fans.

Hixus, Prison Warden -

Legendary Creature - Human Soldier

Flash

Whenever a creature deals combat damage to you, if Hixus, Prison Warden entered the battlefield this turn, exile that creature until Hixus leaves the battlefield.

4/4

My opinions? He has a fairly relevant typing, and an interesting ability for control fans, but I don't think he's really that good as creature removal. Other thoughts include "flash in white?" and "might be good for scaring away attackers in Commander".

ComradeJim270 says... #38

Awww, losing protection as evergreen makes me sad. I understand why they did it, but that doesn't mean I have to be happy about it! Prowess as an evergreen seems pretty cool though. Blue needed some love and that will give it a little.

June 10, 2015 11:11 p.m.

JDMCRIB says... #39

His top bit was spoiled a while back, but his 4/4 was spoiled today I believe. Anyway, he may not be super good in Standard, but he's definitely alright in Limited so far; can't be sure until the whole set is revealed.

June 10, 2015 11:13 p.m.

It was made to be a skilled play kinda card. All in maybe a good tech at 2 since one copy of a good card can kinda suck. But as I said before a 2 of.

So, where are all the good spoilers? I just see mountains of Limited commons.

Phaetion says... #45

Apparently there's a mythic rare that has Scry:

From the Mothership's Card of the Day: "Thassa is the only mythic rare to use the [Scry] keyword...so far."

Essentially, either Jace has a scry ability, another blue mythic has it, or it's a functional reprint of Serum Visions at Mythic. Speculate away.

June 11, 2015 10:10 a.m.

Rayenous says... #46

@Phaetion ... or they expect that some time... over the next, say 20 years or so..., there may be a mythic that uses Scry.

June 11, 2015 10:31 a.m.

Rayenous says... #47

Oh... and we don't need to speculate on a Serum Visions Mythic print. - Wizards has already announced that Serum Visions is not in Origins.

June 11, 2015 10:40 a.m.

Phaetion says... #48

I know Visions isn't in Origins. I put that for the laughs. I'm banking on Jace or another blue mythic in Origins. However, what you said is also possible. It's just a hint.

June 11, 2015 12:13 p.m.

Tallica1981 says... #49

lol, Infernal Scarring is nowhere near as broken as Skullclamp. First, as mentioned, skullclamp stays in play and is equipped for 1 colorless mana repeatedly. Also, the biggest thing that makes it OP is the -1 to toughness. It allows for endless draws in a good token deck. equip to a 1/1, it dies, draw 2 cards. pay 1, equip to another token, draw 2 cards. Rinse and repeat.

June 11, 2015 7:28 p.m.

Runlue says... #50

Don't joke about a stoke reprint, that's mean.

I would love a stoke reprint, so let's be serious for a second here. XD
