Magic the Movie. I can't say I believe it will happen, as with many video game/board game/etc adaptations, but with all the lore in Magic, I can just imagine the possibilities. But I can also see all the ways it would end badly with MtG fans. There's plenty of story and lore, but I don't know if this will actually end up following through or just be another dream busted. Or even worse, if it were made "child-friendly" or "child-appealing".
Thoughts?
Would they give cards out when people buy their tickets, like Pokemon did with their first handful of movies?

Oh my god. If Peter Jackson turned to a series of MTG movies and make that his next big project, BRIX WILL BE SHAT.

i am excited about this, but the history of movies based on nerd franchises is not in favor of this movie being good. But as long as Jace is not horribly miscast I will be happy.

i could totally see hollywood doing something stupid like make jace wear a black coat and have a mustache! anyways, i doubt that this will be any good at all no matter what, but i will see it anyways.

bantam1234: true that! I hope this isn't our Jace..lol

I had to laugh when I saw that whoever put the graphics together couldn't even be bothered to find a product image from the last 15 years.
I'll try not to get too discouraged thinking of Dungeons and Dragons...

I do think that the movie would be mostly based around Jace, given his popularity right now and in the past. It just feels like it would be the most obvious move.

@zandl: "Welcome to ~ Cinema, where "Magic the Gathering: Jace & Chandra's birthday party fun day" is showing. Here's your complimentary Mox Ruby . Alternatively, you can choose a Spined Wurm which has more P/T and thus is better".

@cr14mson his name was the reason i read those books in the first place, the series was good though, but the second 2 were... offputting, the series ended in the 3rd book

@ cr14mson : Haha that's great, Jim Carrey might be able to play a legit Goblin King ... possibly Krenko, Mob Boss ?

I can't stop daydreaming about sitting in a cool, dark theater in the dead of summer in Phoenix, watching the lavish opening sequences to "Magic: The Gathering" by Peter Jackson and looking forward to "Magic: The Veil Curse" and "Magic: The Planeswalker's Creed".

Or how terrible would it be if Criss Angel were cast as Jace?

i wonder though if this turned on a whole bunch of new players to the game. Which in turn could drive up the value and pricing on a bunch of cards.
Or it would be a massive flop and turn cult classic.

Well, Criss Angel is a great actor (spoilers), and I think that he'd make a pretty good Jace. or a clean shaven James Franco.
I'm honestly pumped if this is going to be a thing. I don't really care what story line they follow, so long as they follow it accurately. Personally, I want to see the eldrazi take over Zendikar, and see Gerard Butler bust some faces as Gideon.

if I had to judge based off of the image, probably mirage and alliances storyline

@ ThatBlueMage : Touche, I could see Butler as Gideon what do you think about these

I think longer haired Bradley Cooper could just maybe pull off Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
but maybe Kate Beckinsale as Liliana Vess

I could definitely see all of those as being next to if not the proper choices.
I would also love to see Scarlett Johansson as Elspeth. Granted, I also just want to see Scarlett Johansson...

i think thats all we need, now we need to send it to somebody who can make this movie and not an awful one

John Cho as Jace is something I could actually see. It would have to be someone who would seem to normally be the quiet one but then flip his shit.

I will go BATSHIT if the MtG resembles this adaptation

I don't know about anyone else, but i would like to see Mirrodin and the Phyrexia conflict on film. Alternatively I have nothing against the Elderazi kicking Gideon's ass or seeing Ravnica and the various guilds battle it out.
Probably guna be a terrible movie non the less.

Talked to a buddy about this today.
Mirroden storyline, Ron Pearlman playing Karn and David Tennant playing Venser.

david tennant resembles venser in a way, but why ron pearlman?

Have you seen him as hellboy? Add a little makeup and the guy looks just like Karn, Silver Golem . Also, the voice.

I will be pleasantly surprised if the move turns out to be true to the story, good effects and at least a decent plot. I hope this doesn't turn into another Dragonball Evolution or Dungeons and Dragons movie.

Well, it definitely has potential, but knowing what hollywood usually does I don't really have high hopes. I'll watch it anyway :P
Story-wise they might just actually not go to the past and just use 'current' Magic storyline each year, basically going along with the sets. Not sure if that would be awesome, but it could. So if there would be movie next year, it could coincide with the release (or conclusion) with the Magic set at that point.
They could also do a kind of Avengers thing, where they introduce the story of a single or maybe 2 PWs at a time and then have them have a big fight vs Bolas or some such after 3-5 movies.
January 14, 2014 7:55 a.m.
I'm not sure how good this will be, as I realize many of the MtG storylines end with the "bad guys" winning, or at least being left in the lurch with the upper hand (New Phyrexia, Zendikar). The first Ravnica block seems to me the best hope for a movie, as it has all the action, intrigue and actually ends with the good guys winning.
They might do a Jace storyline, with movies portraying his involvement in the various planes. Though I highly doubt it will (and I hope it won't) be PG13, especially with all the darker elements. A Pan's Labyrinth kind of movie would be interesting to see, though I don't have the highest of hopes.

Movies no longer have to abide by "The Code" so I see nothing wrong with the antagonist winning. Heck it would be a good change. I personally would like to see the movie set on Dominaria during legends.

I'm wondering who the main antagonist(s) will be I'm guessing either Bolas or the Phyrexians. Those two seem to be the main evil forces in the mtg verse. The stories from Zedikar, Mirrodin or Lorwyn would be my favorites to see. I would also like to see some of the earlier stories with Urza but somehow i doubt they will start of with a movie pre-mending the planeswalkers were to op back then. This could be quite interesting but I'm not looking forward to it that much too many movies I've watched lately have failed massively to portray what its based on i just hope this doesn't end up as bad as the Dragonball movie.

Fox just bought the rights to the franchise, but that doesn't mean a movie will ever happen. More often than not, when a deal like this comes along a movie is never actually made. Or, it doesn't happen for many years.
The D&D movie was embarrasingly awful, but not as bad as the Dragonlance movie. Remember that? The biggest WotC flop ever. For 10 years people had been speculating about that movie, and when they announced a movie was officially coming fans went crazy. Then they released the biggest piece of crap animated movie, using the WORST animation - early 1980s Saturday morning cartoon quality. And then the entire Dragonlance franchise died that same year.
I'm hoping this mtg movie doesn't happen, because it could never be good.

If they do make this movie they might not even use any of the Magic lore for the plot. It could be just a random wizard movie with the Magic name slapped on it. Just like how the Final Fantasy movie and D&D movie had nothing in common with any of the games - if they didn't have the branding in the title no one would have guessed the connections.
I really wish they'd make a Forgotten Realms movie, but apparently the D&D movie rights are up in the air right now. The original movie was made before the Hasbro takeover of Wizards, and Wizards had originally given the rights to the guys who made the first movie, and last year those guys sold the rights to Warner Bros. But Hasbro had already sold the movie rights to Universal. So now they're in court trying to figure out who owns what. It's a mess. It might also explain why the third D&D movie was only released in other countries.
January 14, 2014 11:55 a.m.
what, they need to know who owns it? Everybody knows it's Last In, First Out in the stack!!
January 14, 2014 12:13 p.m.
@SharuumNyan: O ye of little faith. First of all, good job reading the linked article:
"Execs Kira Goldberg and Ryan Jones were instrumental in the acquisition and will shepherd the films for Fox. Daniel Persitz will oversee for Hasbro.Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis and Wizards of the Coast president Greg Leeds will act in production capacities. Aditya Sood and Josh Feldman, Kinberg's key execs at his Genre Films production shingle, will also act as executive producers on the movie. "
Sounds pretty serious to me.
Secondly, if both Hasbro and WotC higher-ups are part of it, I doubt they'll let it be bad. With the huge trend of comic-book, graphic-novel, and late-1900's-shows movies being released over the last 10 or 12 years, I've noticed a marked improvement in the quality over just the last 4 years. I feel like an MTG movie would follow along in the footsteps of many of these movies from a design an production standpoint and may even allow itself to be made in an epic fantasy setting, much like LotR and The Hobbit.

The MTG books are superbly well written and thought out. I can't imagine that Hasbro would led something bad to come out.
