So, this got leaked. I don't know when its supposed to come out, but thoughts are that it will be in an upcoming multiplayer set. Thoughts?

I'm guessing whatever they do this summer will include that card, either commander or planechase, not sure what it will be but since it has the 2014 printed in the bottom corner, I assume it will be coming out this year.

It seems way too early for them to be printing C14, and it doesn't seem to be following the same evolution of the Commander and C13 set symbols. That definitely isn't the Journey into Nyx symbol or M15 one, and I'd guess it's also still too early for the next fall set to have entered printing, plus then it should be in the new M15 style. So, if it's real, the only option is something during the special summer products.

I'm on the fence on this being real. I've heard that the artist confirmed it somewhere, but I can't find a link. Take a good look at the collection number, there is a star in it, which is really odd. Also, if this is card 148 (I'm assuming that the star is replacing a one) there is a very high number of multicolored/artifact cards in this set. Like, there would have to be only about 20 cards of each color, compared to probably about 50 each of multicolored and artifact, and this is in a set that is closer in size to a large set than a small set. Something feels off about this.

Looking at the symbol....CUBE. That's my best guess, plus the other coded card on it has to do with drafting....

I'm not sure what to think really. We are just going to have to try to find out what it's about. I'm sure it's legit though because there was apparently a phone number on the back that linked to the Wizard's office. It's not impossible for new cards to be spoiled early either, remember Rootborn Defenses ?

The twitter post from the artist has been deleted, the url was https://twitter.com/postrk/status/429311542958387200.

I would assume that if this is legit it's a part of the spring supplemental product. That would explain why it doesn't reflect the new M15 rare frame. Also makes sense as those supplemental products are usually geared towards multiplayer, which explains the high CMC and effect on card.

The image originated from this shops Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/neutralgrounds/posts/10152170945467422. A kid pulled it in his prerelease pack...

January 31, 2014 3:35 p.m.

Several things feel a bit odd about the card. First is the name of the artist. I don't remember any of Wizards artists having the name "rk post" at all, as well as no capital letters? Grammar is a thing when it comes to these cards.

Secondly is the symbol looks a bit funky and weird, not the typical symbol you see in Magic.

Thirdly, as raithe000 pointed out, the number at the bottom has a star in it. If that was legit I doubt they would put a star there. Too far of a stretch to be a typo either.

January 31, 2014 3:50 p.m.

alulien says... #8

rk post IS a legit MTG artist, he's got 100+ cards credited to him. With that exact capitalization/spelling.

Typically the star indicates a promo card. Look at a copy of the promo version of Nightveil Specter - it has a star by the card #.

January 31, 2014 3:55 p.m.

raithe000 says... #9

Alright, so stars are put on promo cards along with their regular printing numbers. So, in theory, this card is #48 of 210 cards.

That is really weird. Normally cards are ordered in WUBRG order, followed by multicolor, artifacts, and lands. This would suggest there are at most 47 mono-colored cards in the set. I can't even imagine how that would work.

I've seen something on Facebook about a phone number on the back of the card.

Does anyone know where this was opened? As I understand it, the prerelease packs aren't supposed to be opened until Feb. 1st. It's possible I'm messing up time zones (probable, really) but I thought it was still January 31st or 30th everywhere?

January 31, 2014 3:59 p.m.

raithe000 says... #10

Fateful hour, Tempting offer, and Join forces are all ability words with the second word not capitalized, so it's possibly templated correctly.

January 31, 2014 4:03 p.m.

@alulien: Weird.....never seen that before .w. I usually don't pay too much attention to who draws what but I didn't think that would be a possible name. My bad :3

I linked the Facebook page of the shop where this was opened at in one of my previous comments. The store, Neutral Grounds, is located in the Philippines so that would explain the time zone differential for those of us in the States. They've just posted a couple more pics of the card 2 hours ago with details on the phone #: https://www.facebook.com/neutralgrounds/posts/10152171083662422

Funny that someone pulled this in a pre-release pack... when no one should have opened any pre-release packs yet.

January 31, 2014 4:10 p.m.

raithe000 says... #14

No, it's Saturday in the Phillipines, and English is one of the official languages there, so it's possible.

@golffore297 What other coded card?

January 31, 2014 4:16 p.m.

graft says... #16

So: this appears to be the beginning of an ARG. Here is a thread figuring it out: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3568408&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=429

And apparently if you call the phone number on the back of the card, you get a cryptogram that can be deciphered to get the following:

Cogwork Librarian 4
Artifact Creature - Construct
Draft Cogwork Librarian face up. As you draft a card, you may draft an additional card from that booster pack. If you do, put Cogwork Librarian into that booster pack.
3/3 Conspiracy

So yeah, I'm with golffore297, this seems like some kind of Cube offering, possibly with a multiplayer component to it.

January 31, 2014 4:17 p.m.

Rayenous says... #17

...so the question then becomes... did the Judge let him play with it in his pre-release?

January 31, 2014 4:18 p.m.

raithe000 says... #18

The judge shouldn't have. It's like opening a pack with 15 rares in it. You get a replacement pack (assuming it wasn't the seeded pack for the prerelease, you replace it with either a THS pack or a BNG prize pack).

January 31, 2014 4:21 p.m.

raithe000 says... #19

So if it's a cube set... why is one of the cards designed for multiplayer?

Still a bunch of oddities, but I'm beginning to think this is real.

Krayhaft says... #22

Preview cards that were opened in other sets is not new. Rootborn Defenses was actually previewed from an Innistrad pack, iirc. The templating also looks mostly correct, so it's very possible it's legitimate. We'll know when Wizards does an "Announcing..." and we see the same set symbol.

But can we talk about how awesome this card looks? It just oozes flavor and is right at home in huge EDH games. I very much like the will of the council ability, it's very much political.

January 31, 2014 9:35 p.m.

Look at the face. That doesn't look like a face that rk post drew. In fact, the face looks like it comes from a separate image altogether. The coloring is just... Wrong.

Look at the set symbol. It looks like some sort of screw.

In spite of the oddity of the face, rk post has said that he can neither confirm nor deny whether this is a real card.

What if this card is from an un-set. Unscrewed, perhaps? I believe that the face on the card may well be that of Worth Wollpert, the MTGO head. It would also explain the clunky wording.

Discuss.

Don't know how much accuracy there is in this, but just saw this thread on MTGS.

Tradeylouish says... #25

I can personally confirm this card is legitimate. At one of the prereleases I attended today, someone opened this card in their prerelease pack. In case anyone is interested, it was in the seeded booster pack.

I personally believe that this is a preview card for an upcoming supplemental product. It seems like clever marketing to me.

thuzra says... #26

Too early for Commander gen3, and Planechase gen2 was the year before that, so my best guess is this is Wizards' new shot at Archenemy. However, this would suck in an Archenemy deck (where it's one vs many), just on the basis of it's mechanic (unless the Archenemy has already leveled the playing field back down to 1v1). Unless they're forging a new casual multiplayer archetype, or like they seem to suggest in the forum linked above, a multiplayer-draft-Cube-thing, then I'm not sure what to make of this at all. And it can't be for the next block after Theros, because of the rare format-change. To Wizards: Congratulations! You've stumped us all. You may return to your towers and continue your mysterious conjurations in peace, knowing that your simplest mistakes will mind-fuck your loyal servants.

Also - @graft - what is an ARG?

If this is indeed a Cube set, I hope WotC decides to ship it with its own storage (like Theros holiday gift boxes)

judging by the other card spoiled it this same set (http://mythicspoiler.com/cpy/index.html) it looks like it's either a cube or a specifically designed draft set like modern masters only it will contain new cards.

the other card spoiled in the set is called Cogwork Librarian and it's ability is a little strange "Draft Cogwork Librarian face up. As you draft a card, you may draft an additional card. If you do, put Cogwork Librarian into that booster pack."

If this is #48 of 210 cards, and all monocolored cards usually are first, this set will be mostly multicolored. That would need some mana fixing.. Is this the set they will reprint the fetches in? A much needed reprint to make modern more accessible to new players and a reprint that wont impact standard where fetches would be too powerful..

Schuesseled says... #31

It would seem to be a set designed for buying a box then drafting it alone. Which could be fun.

February 2, 2014 9:36 p.m.

TheFlish says... #32

This can't be commander because Cogwork Librarian was released in the same set, and it let's you draft 2 cards from a booster pack as long as you replace the 2nd card with cogwork librarian
