well...that sure is interesting.....

I think it's pretty clear this isn't for Standard constructed Magic. But it's a cool design regardless.

September 8, 2014 12:26 a.m.

I get the flavor and all, but im going to say this isn't standard playable. definitely great for limited, but that is about it

September 8, 2014 12:27 a.m.

beakedbard says... #6

I suppose it keeps your opponents on the ball if they need to remove it.

Still 5/9 for 5cmc in green is pretty good and it avoids sorceries casted on main phase 1 which is good i guess. I really don't know what to make of it.

Does this not combo amazingly with Temur Ascendancy ..?

September 8, 2014 12:27 a.m.

it actually does. great catch, Spooty

seuvius says... #9

I REALLY like this card! Casual players are going to eat this up

September 8, 2014 12:30 a.m.

EmblemMan says... #10

that cant be the text....wouldnt it just exile itself every turn

September 8, 2014 12:32 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #11

EmblemMan - when it comes back, it was never declared as an attacker, so it won't exile itself. I.e. it was never there to "see" itself as attacking.

beakedbard says... #12

That and Ferocious in general hm this is going to make for some interesting decks if this actually becomes viable.

September 8, 2014 12:33 a.m.

no, it only triggers when you declare it as an attacker. It isn't declared as an attacker when it returns

Something along the lines of Elvish Mystic > Temur Ascendancy > Courser of Kruphix > this guy seems like a solid way to get tons of advantages both in land drops and card draw. And the islandwalk might make a huge difference in many matchups.

5 mana 9/9 in Doran EDH maybe? i love this guy, but I gotta admit he's not really playable.

September 8, 2014 12:39 a.m.

Osang says... #17

I love how it's a Sultai card that synergizes with a Temur card. Great art and decent body to anchor a defense as well.

A+ for the flavor... and that the video made me laugh. Also, he blocks Zurgo... neat.

Turn 1 elvish mysticTurn 2 morph rattleclaw mysticTurn three flip rattleclaw mystic and play this guyI'm not the most experienced player but I would guess that this will see play. Just imagine pulling this off against someone playing islands.

Dritz says... #21

At first I thought this card was terrible. Now I think it might be worth a 1 of drop in in a green control list. The idea of wrathing while the turtle is away or similar is very funny to me.

September 8, 2014 3:18 a.m.

DaShPrime says... #22

He could just be a 5/9 defender for 5. I mean, we all know how annoying Nessian Asp is. True, he doesn't have reach, but +1/+4 is worth it.

September 8, 2014 4:37 a.m.

darthfrog says... #23

A 5 drop that does 2.5 damage a turn seems slow to me.

Love the flavour and will be a good limited dude, but not a go to guy in standard.

Someone else dubbed this "Durdle Turtle."

Because it's a turtle. That helps you durdle.

September 8, 2014 6:55 a.m.

pookypuppy6 says... #26

If I get to use him, everytime he makes his attack from his ability, I'm going to say "Take Two". Firstly because the Turtle failed the first attack and came back for a second shot, and secondly to confuse the opponent on how much damage they are taking.

bretters says... #27

Haste from temur ascendancy will help so the first attack that goes through isn't on the 3rd turn of the creature being out. But after its first attack it will still be every other turn right ? Slowww

September 8, 2014 7:10 a.m.

bretters says... #28

Against blue I think I would still rather side in Mistcutter Hydra

Flavor Discussion: Not sure how this fits into Sultai? Not all Sultai needs to have interaction with the graveyard sure, but at least Kheru Spellsnatcher is a naga using crazy (overcosted) magic manipulation, so it fits. Besides that I agree the flavor is quite good.

Viability discussion: This card screams out to all the Johnnys to try and break it. I do like the thought with Temur Ascendancy , but I don't know if a 8 mana combo that says "draw one card every other attack while denying yourself a huge blocker" is good enough. I feel you would need more ETBs going on before having a slow flickering creature like this pay off. I'd sooner just let this sit out there as a fatty blocker.

September 8, 2014 8:24 a.m.

weisemanjohn says... #30

Its a turtle... Of course its slow... It does seem to be a very interesting card though and it indeed would be fun to break it. Also guess what! Oppressive Rays falls off after 1 attack! I'm sure this big guy will have his place.

September 8, 2014 8:39 a.m.

brandontraps says... #31

Whip of Erebos is probably why its Sultai :D.

September 8, 2014 9:28 a.m.

capriom85 says... #32

That's the first thing I thought when I saw this guy, Dritz. Swing, exile, wrath, enjoy. It's slow though. Imagine a situation when you have them rotating so you have 1 coming in when while 1 is leaving. That would be annoying.

September 8, 2014 9:49 a.m.

Obviously the best way to make up for his drawback is.... TWO DURDLE TURTLES!!

(Insert maniacal laughter)

Just have them attacking on alternating turns... for a mere ten mana investment, only one would fall to a wrath effect...and you would trigger the Ascendancy each turn... Nothing I say is making this any better is it?

I think I am going to build a Durdle Turtle deck and run it at FNM see how many people I can beat based on them laughing too hard to play anymore.

September 8, 2014 9:58 a.m.

sylvannos Durdle Turtle is the perfect name for this card.

September 8, 2014 10:11 a.m.

weisemanjohn says... #35

I think you are on to something with double durtle turtle

September 8, 2014 10:13 a.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #36

Durdle Turtle all day, erry day.

September 8, 2014 10:57 a.m.

jr92_2000 says... #37

Yeah, this seems like the strangest watermark choice so far. This card feels Temur, but I could have bought Abzan too. Sultai, though?

September 8, 2014 11:15 a.m.

weisemanjohn says... #38

The turtle is not temur because its never around to trigger ferocious

September 8, 2014 11:23 a.m.

angelus10 says... #39

I know some people will say it's not that strong standard but I disagree. It gives you time (for example) for a field wipe. Combine this and phytotitan selesnya fun. We just got a 5 drop field wipe. Selesnya will be running some type of ramp so combine it for shenanigans.

September 8, 2014 11:35 a.m.

Pidgeot says... #40

this card is awesome, but it should be temur :( it synergizes much better in temur, and doesn't even have any vague similarity to any sultai cards, so why i ask, WHY!!!!!? :'(

Devonin says... #41

This is nearly as awesome a flavour grand slam as Eye Gouge was. Love love love whoever came up with this card.

The Durdle Turtle is officially my first Khans of Tarkir Pre-order. Playset for $2.50 on ebay.

Some will say I paid too much, to which I will respond by turning my back and walking away.... then coming back later to punch them in the face.

Hakuna matata B!#ches!
