This card seems very interesting to say the least. You need a target for it to burn your opponent (right?), but it also doesn't need to actually counter the spell if it kills the opponent. A decent 1-2 of?

Also, that's Temur art. I love midrange-focused counterspells.

I would still play Dissolve and Dissipate over it in most cases

This card looks really good. Jeskai control needs to be a thing.

Don't think you'd play this as a 5-6th counterspell? I mean, granted, trying to burn the opponent out is not what standard control decks have been doing for the past...long time.

I mean, it is an option. My thing is do we really want to dump all the mana into it. Maybe it could be a 1-2 of as a counter-finisher but I feel like by the time control would need it we should already have a finisher on board. But I could see it being in lists, my initial opinion though still rests with the other counters

It might also just be fairly outclassed by Keranos, God of Storms . Both potentially deal damage, both cost quite a but to play, but Keranos also means a bit of card advantage. It probably won't be a staple.

i see it in a Temur midrange deck with it in it as a surprise finisher, get some damage through with your dudes then out of nowhere counter

@Spootyone With Keranos, God of Storms handing out free lightning bolts (or cards), it might be viable.

I wonder if it could be sided against control in a tempo prowess deck strategy. I feel like leaving 3 mana for a Dissipate or Hero's Downfall is common enough (and easy enough to read) . . . and this let's you swing with your board, watch them try to kill your stuff (or counter your instant speed buffs i.e. Titan's Strength ), and then buff/burn/counter all at once.

I don't play standard (EDH only really - where this is terribad outside of infinite mana combos), but prowess/tempo was my first thought as a useful place for this. Also feel free to correct me if I'm using tempo wrong here (I dithered between that and midrange, but I'm 90% sure I'm right now).

There are some people, who just want to play Izzet Counterburn.

I'm not one of those guys, but I'm so happy for them.

I love this spell. I get that it isn't the most efficient spell in the game, but I like it in a removal heavy deck. I know this is a wedge based set and all, but....Grixis!!!!!

I can dig it.

September 4, 2014 8:39 p.m.

Inefficient, totally. But I love it anyway because it does something no even if the counter fails.

I like the flavor and the art, but the value is not there to warrant use in most formats. I predict a junk rare that I'll probably start collecting.

I'm planning on a temur deck and I feel like I should put it in as a 1-2 of just to punish someone for wanting to try to play a mid/late game board wipe.

I think Nylea would be the most popular God for a RUG creatures deck, Xenagod second, with Keranos at third by a lot.
