ChiefBell at least wait until the whole set is spoiled tomorrow. They might have some secrets in store.

I've actually been looking forward to the Uncommons/Commons... Mythics/Rares are nice and all, but either I have them (Karn Liberated, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn), or I've decided not to bother with them (Tarmogoyf, Mox Opal)... it's the Unocmmon cards that make/break decks that I need to see more of... (Remand, hopefully Serum Visions, etc.)
Heck... I know they're cheap, but even the bounce lands are nice as I plan on collecting all Modern Duals (Got Shocks during RTR, and just finished Fetches). - I probably have a playset of most, since they are in almost every Commander Deck Wizards releases, but this will ensure I will have them.

I'm probably gonna split a box with a friend or two. It's too much money at once I could spend on other things to buy by myself anyway.

@GoldGhost012 if you really needed to turn cash into Amazon, most places sells those gift cards, gas stations, grocery stores etc. At least here they do and in Illinois also.

Bull. Many, many format staples and/or insanely expensive cards at RARE???
and even more crazy ($10+) cards, like Remand printed as uncommons!! I'm buying as many packs as possible!

@JWiley129: Yeah, that's what I figured. I'm no Limited expert. But, if that's the justification for Comet Storm at mythic, there's just no reason to print it. A reprint is definitely not in the best interests of the Modern format, and it's taking up a Mythic slot which could have been used for a Constructed playable card, which is what the set is about.

Guys, you can't put too much value into packs. Crap cards exist for a many reasons. One of those reasons is that if the expected value of a pack is significantly above the msrp, no one will sell the pack at msrp. You still want it to be a draftable set. You still want people to buy more than one pack at a time. I for one am GLAD that there is a crap mythic. Enough packs are going to the GPs and what isn't there is ending up with speculators. I want to crack one or two as a treat.
I don't draft. I don't buy boxes. Mostly I sort bulk in my free time at the LGS and they let me keep some of the 2-3 dollar cards I want, and offer me discounts and store credit for big things. Magic: The Gathering is something that I do for myself. My friends are from other things. I'm the only one I regularly spend time with who plays. So when I crack a pack, it is usually for the fun of opening it and guessing what is inside. The rush of pulling something awesome, or the sensation of holding a fresh card that hasn't seen the light of day since it was printed and packaged. I buy a pack usually when I'm in a good mood, the weather is nice, I've had something to eat, and I figure "why the hell not? I deserve something fun". It isn't fun if I pay $15 a pack because the majority of the cards are worth $$$$. I don't buy packs for cards I plan on using. I buy them for the experience. And the experience is significantly more fun when there are flashy cards like Comet Storm alongside money cards like Mox Opal. Sure, the opal is a better card, but the comet storm is much more likely to see play from me. It can be slotted into hastily constructed decks that get taken apart hours later. Opal can't. Opal needs 3 other opals and then only works in a specific kind of deck that is no fun in casual. At the end of the day, Comet Storm is much more fun to play than a single Mox Opal. Magic is a card game, and fun is what matters.
Cards like Comet Storm make magic fun.

Estimated Value of a Booster based on TCGMid prices at this current moment:
Mythics
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn - $43.08
Kozilek, Butcher of Truth - $48.08
Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre - $36.40
Karn Liberated - $44.07
Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite - $32.39
Tezzeret the Seeker - $12.99
Comet Storm - $0.98!
Primeval Titan - $16.15
Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker - $24.59
Iona, Shield of Emeria - $28.34
Tarmogoyf - $190
Vendilion Clique - $64.99
Dark Confidant - $63
Bitterblossom - $43.61
Mox Opal - $44.95
Mythics Total = $693.62
Average Mythic Value = $46.42
Value Added to booster = $5.78
(to obtain this value I divide the average by 8 - this is in recognition of the fact that only one booster in 8 contains a mythic).
Rares (Oh god - this will take me ages!)
All Is Dust - $18.99
Surgical Extraction - $5.96
Mirror Entity - $1.56
Necroskitter - $5.64
All Suns' Dawn - $0.69!
Wildfire - $0.45!
Indomitable Archangel - $1.89
Splinter Twin - $24.51
Noble Hierarch - $50.33
Daybreak Coronet - $28.49
Hurkyl's Recall - $4.75
Goblin Guide - $18.95
Mirran Crusader - $3.64
Cryptic Command - $53.40
Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder - $0.29!
Leyline of Sanctity - $28.26
Profane Command - $0.57!
Horde of Notions - $0.74!
Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind - $4.59
Ghost Council of Orzhova - $1.58
Mystic Snake - $2.42
Shadowmage Infiltrator - $1.50
Apocalypse Hydra - $8.50
Wilt-Leaf Liege - $29.37
Nobilis of War - $0.45
Swans of Bryn Argoll - $1.89
Fulminator Mage - $37.03
Creakwood Liege - $10.06
Sunforger - $2.50
Etched Monstrosity - $0.87!
Spellskite - $23.70
Etched Champion - $4.68
Eye of Ugin - $13.20
Blinkmoth Nexus - $11.44
Rares Total = $402.89
Average Rare Value = $11.85
Value Added to booster = $10.37
(to obtain this value I divide the average by 1.125 - this is in recognition of the fact that 7 in 8 boosters contains a rare).
Total value of rares and mythics = $10.37+$5.78=$16.15
The MSRP is $10. So as it stands right now you should be making roughly $6 on average from the rare and mythic slot.
Now we should really factor in price decreases, however the mythic slot won't decrease by much at all. I'll multiple this one (the mythics) by 95% to represent a modest 5% decrease (5.78 x 0.95 = $5.49).
The rares are harder to factor in because no one can say exactly what they will do. I'll go for a small 20% hit to the price (10.37 x 0.8 = $8.30)
Total adjusted is $13.49
So even if we imagine a small price hit you should still be making money. This is also without the uncommons and commons too!
In fact at a current EV of $16.15 the price can decrease by 66% and you'll still be in pocked by 66 cents.

Nobilis of War kinda has me thinking that Boros Voltron is the real deal. Also, =1 confirmed!

Awesome analysis ChiefBell!
Given this you're still down on the set overall?

@Serendipitous_Hummingbird: That's a valid mindset, but it doesn't work for everyone. I, personally, would be all for Comet Storm if Modern Masters were unlimited print, $4 per pack (or even like $6 or $7). But it's not. Personally, I can probably only afford 1 pack of Modern Masters. If I open Comet Storm, I'll be hugely disappointed. I'll think, "If that had been a Goyf. I would have been able to afford to draft Modern Masters. If Wizards hadn't decided to print crap mythics in their premium set, this would have been a good day." That's the situation I'm in, and so for me, having crap mythics is terrible.
May 7, 2015 5:22 p.m.
Nope because european prices are more like $20 per pack.
May 7, 2015 5:23 p.m.
UrbanAnathema says... #21
Programmer_112 I just don't think that's a fair mindset. If you're gonna have a $180 Mythic...you'r gonna have to have a $1.50 Mythic...thats just kind of the nature of a TCG.

Runlue Narcissistic tendencies detected, Runlue has been caught referring to him/herself in the third person, I repeat Runlue is referring to him/herself in the third person.

Great, now ChiefBell has to redo the rare cash calculations.
Poor ChiefBell.
May 7, 2015 5:39 p.m.
Runlue that was going to happen regardless since the entire set will be spoiled tomorrow.

Rip Chief.
I'm debating between "this set is trash and half the cards aren't even played in modern" (Eldrazi titans and Elesh Norn, anyone?) and "this set is pretty great because I primarily play EDH".
May 7, 2015 5:45 p.m.
ThisIsBullshit - There IS Gifts Ungiven which runs Elesh Norn and Goryo's Vengeance which runs Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. So they are played, just not widely. And don't forget that big E is played in Legacy Show and Tell and Vintage Oath of Druids.

Who's willing to spare me 240? Anyone? I...need...a...box...
May 7, 2015 5:47 p.m.
Well, I'm pretty heavily swayed by the price of the cards. That being said, I don't give a poop about the price of the cards in this set. So I'm getting a box.
Also, has anyone forgotten about foils being a thing? A foil of that new, lush looking Kiki Jiki is just dying for me to get.
May 7, 2015 5:47 p.m.
AngryBearTony says... #34
Agree with ThisIsBullshit; this might be fun to draft or even do sealed (once!), and that's about it. But for kitchen table hijinks and EDH, this seems to be fantastic.
May 7, 2015 5:48 p.m.
In my box of MM13 I opened a Tarmogoyf and a foil Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker. However I traded both of them for a box of Theros. I feel much shame now.
May 7, 2015 5:49 p.m.
Chance of a rare foil is like 1 in 8. Chance of a particular rare foil is like 1 in 160 or something.

If only I was packing such goodies like Soulfire Grand Master(When it was 60$), Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker(When it was 50$), and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon these days...
May 7, 2015 5:50 p.m.
ChiefBell I BELIEVE IN MY ODDS.
Actually, I don't. I probably have the worst luck out of everyone here.
May 7, 2015 5:50 p.m.
Runlue - Sword of Fire and Ice, Sarkhan Vol, AEther Vial, Progenitus, Lightning Helix, Path to Exile, and that's basically it.
May 7, 2015 5:53 p.m.
oh, I just realized you meant the box of Theros. Like an Elspeth, Sun's Champion and a Stormbreath Dragon I think. It was over a year ago, I don't recall exactly.

JWiley129 oh I know that they're played in other formats. But this is "Modern" Masters, not legacy or vintage or magic in general.

Serendipitous_Hummingbird says... #47
If it needs a reprint it needs a reprint. End of story. And with cards that are extremely powerful, or have unusual abilities, it can be very hard to just slip those reprints into standard or a duel deck

DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE
VINTAGE MASTERS!
AN AMAZING EXCUSE TO BRING BACK THE LOTUS AND THE POWER 9!
May 7, 2015 6:10 p.m.
ThisIsBullshit - The way I see it, it's more about getting cards legal in Modern out in the world than getting cards that are all good in Modern.
