Yeah, how many years later ChiefBell? lol

VampireArmy says... #2

Visions needs to be uncommon :t

May 8, 2015 1:51 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #3

Some years later. Some. To be fair, blue needs modern playable cantrips that fit the tricky sweet spot between 'awful' and 'completely busted'.

May 8, 2015 1:53 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #4

ChiefBell - I don't think Wizards has figured out how to make a card selection spell that isn't busted. Serum Visions is probably the closest to the middle of your scale, but even then it's too good for Standard it seems.

May 8, 2015 1:55 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #5

Scry 1, draw card.

Doesn't seem overly busted for 1 mana. Would be sorcery not instant I think.

May 8, 2015 1:58 p.m.

IndepenentMeta says... #6

If it comes out in the packs its in standard. Magic is played a little different from other card games cause you have 2 blocks to work with and anything that might come out on the side. So saying that it's too broken for standard is a bad statement just because it can't be in standard if it's not in the blocks.

May 8, 2015 2:01 p.m.

AngryBearTony says... #7

@ChiefBell - I would put that in any deck I had running without a second thought.

May 8, 2015 2:01 p.m.

IndepenentMeta says... #8

AngryBearTony is right I was just about to make that point but he beat me too it lol

May 8, 2015 2:02 p.m.

IndepenentMeta says... #9

What are some of the broken cards that are blue and in modern that you guys are talking about? The format was run by pod then splinter twin is taking over. I haven't seen any good top list with blue as a main threat in ages. If anything blue is falling behind

May 8, 2015 2:05 p.m.

Ugh hell no do you know how bad scrying before the draw is. Serum visions is far more superior

May 8, 2015 2:07 p.m.

Rayenous says... #11

So... further to ChiefBell's previous calculations, I have the Average Rare Slot Value sitting at $12.35
- This is using: [Avg(Rare) x 7/8] + [Avg(Mythic) x 1/8]

(Based on current prices on StarCityGames - because that is what my LGS uses, so it's relevant for me)

This is JUST the rare slot... it does not include value of uncommons, commons, or even the 'Premium' (foil) cards.

So, MSRP of $9.99 seems okay. - Especially if there are common and uncommon cards you need. - Of which there are a few I need.

I'm Glad I'm getting 3 (possibly 4) boxes for this set.

May 8, 2015 2:09 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #12

You have that grossly backwards meta. Scrying before draw lets you deicde if the card your about to draw is the one you want

May 8, 2015 2:09 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #13

Wow. I'm in stitches of laughter.

May 8, 2015 2:12 p.m.

WovenNebula says... #14

@Rayenous although it's nice to think we'd be averaging a little more than msrp but that's assuming static prices, which will not happen, It'd be more like 8 dollar avgerage. I wish it was more and I would of kept my pre-order but it is what it is.

May 8, 2015 2:18 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #15

That is also a calculation that I assume is not taking into account price drops on set release?

May 8, 2015 2:20 p.m.

square711 says... #16

Come on, we all know scrying before the draw sucks. Why the hell do you think Wizards banned Serum Visions and didn't do a thing about Preordain?

...wait

May 8, 2015 2:20 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #17

Would you rather scry1, draw1

Or

Draw1, scry2

May 8, 2015 2:22 p.m.

VexenX says... #18

Archetypes: This is what I personally got from looking at all the revealed cards for the set. I am likely wrong, and not using all the terms that seasoned MTG players use, but this is how I am seeing things. Please let me know what I can add to the list, remove, or edit.

: Elementals/Changelings

: Artifact/Sunburst

: Artifacts

: Control (Crazy Card draw)

: Equipment/Aura Aggro

: Counters/Proliferate

: Bloodthirst Aggro

: Spirits/Arcane

: Burn/Control

: Bigstuff/Burn???

: Token/Convoke

: Eldrazi/Token Sacrifice

: ??? I'm just saying this because of Viashino Slaughtermaster... He is the only three colored card in this set.. which is kind of confusing lol

I might of forced a few of them, but they all seem to work if you ask me. A lot of these two colored archetypes would work just fine with a third color, like are all tokens.

Two other cards that I am wondering about are Swans of Bryn Argoll (doesn't really fit in : Artifacts) and Noble Hierarch (is the a solid archetype, or is she just a money card/RampElf?)

This list is mainly to get all the jumbled mess in my brain written out. Plus I hope this helps some people. I plan on doing at least 6 drafts and 2 sealed evens, and I want to be as prepared as possible.

Thoughts?

May 8, 2015 2:22 p.m.

Scry 2 adds more options yes in that sense you have 2 cards to choose from. But knowing your next two draw could be potentionally better for turns ahead.

May 8, 2015 2:36 p.m.

Vampire we ve played games where the first scry didn't find anything then the draw was a dead draw IMO that situation sucks. It's that versus the mandatory draw and the scry 2 for the next turns. IMO that one is the better one. Although as I said before scrying 2 before the draw can add value

May 8, 2015 2:39 p.m.

Necrotesque says... #21

So no Serum Visions and we have Telling Time at common. Is this Wizards's way of saying they are going to ban Visions or am I just paranoid?

May 8, 2015 2:39 p.m.

Ugh if they do that imma throw a wizards empolyee off a bridge...

May 8, 2015 2:40 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #23

IndepenentMeta - Scrying at any point adds value, but scrying before you draw adds more because it ensures that more of your draws are good.

If you draw then scry - you can only change what you will draw next. If you scry then draw you can change what you are about to draw immediately. Immediate action is always favoured over later potential. Fixing future draws is worth very little - look at Index (never played)

May 8, 2015 2:42 p.m.

Rayenous says... #24

That is true... I'm not going to predict price drops, and I'm sure some (possibly many) can be expected.

I've completed the Uncommon calculations...

Average uncommon = $0.80
Average value of uncommons in a pack = $2.41

Average pack before commons and foils (and tokens) = $14.84

Even with an across-the-board 25% price drop (which seems high), it's still above MSRP.

I won't be doing foils and commons.

May 8, 2015 2:46 p.m.

There can be cards in the future that add that kinda value to the game but right now I just don't see those cards as fit. There are 60 cards in a topical agin deck and given that your half way in the game you have about 30-40. When you only scry one card you have a slight chance at getting what you need. And if you bottom that card your not really controlling what you draw. Although it has been prove that immediate action could be better. Planning for things ahead just so happens to have its own value. Like tapping your self out for a deathpact you draw a new hand or a very valueable 4 cards. If they re not dead draws you can reclaim whatever board presence you lost. Trust me I've gotten some pretty pro plays done like that.

May 8, 2015 2:47 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #26

Well the uncommons should plummet. The rares are really variable, and the mythics should stay roughly the same. Thats the theory.

May 8, 2015 2:47 p.m.

Man from what yu guys know bout magic economics would u guys happen to think its safe to assume tarmogoyf will go down to 20 a pop for the mm15 mythic or can I just keep dreaming lol?

May 8, 2015 2:49 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #28

I am unsure what you are saying because deathpact is not a magic card and I cannot think of a widely played card that draws you 4 or a whole new hand?

May 8, 2015 2:51 p.m.

cr14mson says... #29

was hoping for more Eldrazi grunts... :(

May 8, 2015 2:52 p.m.

roque says... #30

You have to add the value of drafting and having fun... its not all about the money ;)

May 8, 2015 2:52 p.m.

Rayenous says... #31

@VexenX

I think the is Elemental/Sunburst (which includes the other colors only incidentally).

This would make Viashino Slaughtermaster fall into that archetype.

(Though it also works in the aggro if you splash )

May 8, 2015 2:53 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #32

20 a pop?

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA

May 8, 2015 2:54 p.m.

Rayenous says... #33

I'm having a hard time seeing how the Eldrazi fit... aside from Wizards wanting them to be reprinted.

There's a little ramp, but not really enough to get them out reliably.

And they didn't include any way of 'cheating' them into play.

May 8, 2015 2:58 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #34

It's peculiar isn't it? They really don't seem overly castable.

And the whole Daybreak Coronet being almost uncastable thing too.

Weird

May 8, 2015 2:59 p.m.

NuBByThuMB says... #35

So now that the whole set is spoiled, we need to get it into the draft sim (: @yeaGO

May 8, 2015 2:59 p.m.

Rayenous says... #36

@roque - Unfortunately, the price is a little too prohibitive to be drafted more than once... and many places (like my LGS) have decided not to run a draft at all. - They took a poll, and there weren't enough people willing to pay the entry fee that would be needed to draft.

May 8, 2015 3 p.m.

square711 says... #37

Whoa, I hadn't seen the new Coronet art till now. Holy shit, that looks GORGEOUS. Shame the flavor text is so bland.

May 8, 2015 3:02 p.m.

Rayenous says... #38

Even more shame that while drafting it, you have to rely on Splinter Twin or Goblin War Paint to make it active...
those are the ONLY 2 other auras that aren't 'removal'.

May 8, 2015 3:12 p.m.

Damnable Pact sorry I call it deathpact cause it sounds kooler

May 8, 2015 3:15 p.m.

Lol? Yeah dude I knew that was asking for too much. Freaking goyf man you will always avoid me...

May 8, 2015 3:16 p.m.

Rayenous says... #41

Last Modern Masters, Goyf went UP in price.
Not sure if it will this time, but it certainly won't go down much, if any.

Rayenous says... #44

If anyone was wondering, the +20 cards from MM1 to MM2 is distributed as +1 Rare (from 53 to 54), +19 Uncommon (from 60 to 79).

Still 101 Commons and 15 Mythics.

May 8, 2015 3:41 p.m.

Rayenous says... #45

They need to hold back something of value for MM2017...!

May 8, 2015 3:42 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #46

Yeah sure. That's exactly their plan...

May 8, 2015 3:43 p.m.

dan8080 says... #47

I'd say RBs archetype is like a bloodthirst/elemental tribal. There's a couple there and a lord at uncommon to boot.

May 8, 2015 3:43 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #48

IM might be right if Tarmogoyf was printed in a regular set at rare with an unlimited print run. Otherwise, nope.

May 8, 2015 3:45 p.m.

UrbanAnathema says... #49

Goyfs have likely bottomed already. They have already dropped from peak since they were spoiled...the price cut is already baked in.

May 8, 2015 3:59 p.m.

Well, that's a lot of cards XD
