May 4, 2015 10:55 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #5

New spoiler, from mtg japan!

I'm a little sad it's at mythic, but I'm ok with that.

May 4, 2015 11:07 p.m.

ah, faerie's are always a good investment

May 4, 2015 11:09 p.m.

Mythic?? C'mon wizards :(

May 4, 2015 11:09 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #10

Oooh, very interesting. Strong card gets strong rarity.

May 4, 2015 11:12 p.m.

Fair enough. But that'll probably just make its price jump again. And it's already expensive enough...

May 4, 2015 11:13 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #12

so like was bolt confirmed?

May 4, 2015 11:16 p.m.

Looks awesome so far, but I'm wondering about a few of the rarities. Why is Bitterblossom at mythic? Limited I suppose?

Also, if buy a box and open 25 copies of Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder, I swear...

May 4, 2015 11:16 p.m.

I'm not happy AT ALL with bitterblossom being mythic, but it does make a lot of sense

May 4, 2015 11:19 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #15

Yes, Bolt was confirmed.

Yes, Bitterblossom's rarity is because of Limited. All the cards' rarities are because of Limited.

May 4, 2015 11:20 p.m.

dan8080 says... #16

What's the source on bolt. Not doubting just curious.

May 4, 2015 11:26 p.m.

dan8080 says... #21

Wooo it's official fulminate Mage!!! I'll take 10. I actually hope I get 2 in my box.

May 5, 2015 12:40 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #22

I'm excited for Fulminator Mage mostly for my Tiny Leaders deck, but it will be a useful reprint for Modern definitely!

May 5, 2015 1:05 a.m.

dezzo says... #23

i got annoyed when rares that cost less than the pack price started appearing.

more reasons to never buy packs.

May 5, 2015 2:25 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #24

then don't complain dezzo. Not every card in the set can be a Modern playable, otherwise the boxes would be $500+ and boosters $30+.

They are trying to create a limited environment that is fun and engaging, so rares like Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder have to be included.

May 5, 2015 2:28 a.m.

SimicPower says... #25

dezzo: If all rares were more than the price of a pack, then no one would sell the packs for that price. (Less than $.50 rares do make me kind of mad though)

GoldGhost012: Well Tarmogoyf is pretty bad in limited. Vendilion Clique is good but not mythic good.

May 5, 2015 2:39 a.m.

Hjaltrohir says... #26

SimicPower Tarmo is insane in limited because even 3/4 for 2 is super good and it really isn't that hard to get 4/5 etc. The reason it is mythic is its $200 price. Printing it at rare would seriously annoy all the collectors and people who have spent 800 on a playset.

Clique is super solid in limited, 3/1 flash flying? Seems good. I do agree it isn't mythic quality but same reason as with Tarmo, it is too expensive and good in constructed to print as a rare.

May 5, 2015 3 a.m.

all is dust demoted to rare? Love it!

May 5, 2015 6:37 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #28

THAT I did not expect!

May 5, 2015 6:41 a.m.

smackjack says... #29

Apocalypse Hydra confirmed at rare, and Iona, Shield of Emeria as mythic

May 5, 2015 6:47 a.m.

Where was apocalypse hydra confrimed?

May 5, 2015 7:04 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #31

Apocalypse Hydra was spoiled here

May 5, 2015 7:16 a.m.

Seems official :)

May 5, 2015 7:47 a.m.

Dorotheus says... #34

The only thing that impresses me so far is that Lightning Bolt is going to be an uncommon. I could estimate that Serum Visions will be too and that Path to Exile could be part of that as a cycle, next to Inquisition of Kozilek. Makes perfect sense.

May 5, 2015 7:52 a.m.

Boza says... #35

We have Cryptic Command and Profane Command confirmed as the only two commands AT RARE:

https://twitter.com/mtgaaron/status/595369331384459264

I am super excited by this. This and Clique are so far the only cards I really want from this.

May 5, 2015 8:01 a.m.

squire1 says... #36

So mechanically we have1. phyrexian mana2. metalcraft3. annihilator

If the assumption is that they continue with these, what might we get. I am thinking Gitaxian Probe, Dispatch, Artisan of Kozilek

Rayenous says... #38

Cool.... Hurkyl's Recall is a SB card that needed a reprint. - Many others still needed as well. (Leyline of Sanctity first and foremost)

May 5, 2015 8:57 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #39

A lot of these cards are pretty poor rares. But many of these cards are good. It is a very mixed bag at the moment. I am glad with the volume of modern playable cards seeing reprints - certainly almost all of them are usable, however I am concerned about the values of some cards. All in all, from what I've seen so far, I think this is a very good set for someone that wants to go into modern and has no particular expectations or prior wishes. For collectors it is not a good investment - but boosters never are.

For those that already play modern and aren't collectors. Eh. Some reprints here are fantastic (Fulminator Mage and Spellskite). Really, really good. The insistence of goyf at mythic and clique too is less impressive. However we can hope that if this becomes a two-yearly thing and they continue to print these cards over and over things will certainly get better.

This overall structure isn't going to get wizards any prizes for aggressively reprinting and it's not going to attract plaudits. However, it's solid, it's workable and it's far from bad.

May 5, 2015 9:16 a.m.

Boza says... #40

Knowing almost all the key cards, I think this set is very good. I am glad i preordered a box, the last one was fun to draft, if a bit too stale and this one seems to have some more variance going for it.

Some key reprints like Leyline of Sanctity are so far sorely missed though, this set is about what I expected in terms of value.

SimicPower says... #41

awesomeguy37: The problem with Goyf in limited is that if you cast it turn two it is going to likely be 0/1 or 1/2. If you want the 4/5 or 5/6 Goyf, you have to wait until late game, when your opponent will also have big creatures. And then it still just dies to doom blade. Goyf isn't terrible though, just not first-pickable imo. (Though for some strange reason I feel if I opened a pack with Goyf in it I would first pick it. Hmm...)

May 5, 2015 10:13 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #42

Goyf is really not a good draft pick really. You can't guarantee that you'll play with the variety of permanents needed to make him useful. A 2/3 for 2 is passable but with lightning bolt in the draft I really don't see him being a powerhouse.

May 5, 2015 10:16 a.m.

xcn says... #43

And yet you'll first pick it because you may as well open up a booster and see Benjamin Franklin's face in it.

May 5, 2015 10:19 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #44

xcn - It depends on the context. If you're at your local FNM doing a MM draft? then yes you'll probably take the Tarmogoyf. But if you're at Day 2 of a GP? Then you'll probably pass it because there are better things to be doing Pack 1 Pick 1.

May 5, 2015 10:21 a.m.

kintighd says... #45

My store allows you to switch a pack out. That way if you open an pack and have a goyf in it, you can just pay the money to replace it with another pack. I like that because it encourages good deck building, instead of trying to draft for money cards.

May 5, 2015 10:24 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #46

kintighd - that's really really good.

May 5, 2015 10:34 a.m.

Rayenous says... #47

@kintighd - Not only does that encourage good deck building, but it also increases sales for the store. - Win-win situation...

...except for those who can't afford to buy extra packs, and have a disadvantage over those who get to pay for second changes in their draft.

I would hope that it's limited to 1 'swap-out' per draft... or at least to 1 per pack of the draft... otherwise people with money just win by opening all the packs they want until they have the best first-pick of each pack.
