Most Wanted Reprints for Standard?

So this topic is probably discussed reasonably often, but I'm wondering which older cards everyone thinks would make a good fit in today's Standard? I'm thinking of the metagame, but of course feel free to share any reprints you want for financial purposes (Liliana of the Veil ? Zendikar fetches?)

My personal most-wanted reprint is actually Mystic Snake . I think it's at a decent power level for Standard right now, and it would fit beautifully into my UG tempo deck. Mystic Snake + Quickling could be hilarious. Also, the last set it was printed in was Time Spiral... And Fate Reforged is a time travel themed set... So... M-maybe??? :D

I would also really like a Jace Beleren reprint, maybe in M16. Just seems like a very reasonable planeswalker and a good fit for Standard right now. Anyway, what are your thoughts?

alright 95% chance. theres no way he doesnt show up especially with cards referencing him, the time travel element and all that. only question is if we go back to before his spark ignited and we get him in creature form or not.

@shinobigarth

They are time travelling back to a point just before Nicol Bolas killed Ugin (in order to save Ugin).

Nicol was a PW at that point... as such, we should not see the creature form of Nicol Bolas.

What I don't know, timeline wise, is if they are going back to a point pre or post mending... (Though i'm assuming pre-mending.) - If it is pre-mending, Ugin and Nicol will be much more powerful than we would currently expect from a PW. - I'm sure there won't be uber-powerful PW cards.... but lore wise, they should be more powerful.

well Bolas mentions having killed Ugin a thousand years before to Sarkhan right after he was guarding the Eye of Ugin from Chandra and Jace. i looked at the timeline and if thats true then Bolas killed him roughly 700 years before the Mending.

so...they should be more powerful but they wouldn't do that for the cards. although Bolas's card is pretty powerful already. I'm sure they'll figure something out though.

shinobigarth - Probably Bolas read Sarkhan's mind and lied about the exact year or some stuff like that, even because, Ugin, Sorin and Nahiri, all met post-mending at Zendikar...

Eduardogbg no they didn't. they locked the eldrazi away a looong time ago. Doug Beyer has stated the eldrazi were locked away 6000 years before the "current events" which is basically the last several blocks worth of story.

Is there any evidence to suggest the Eldrazi were put away pre-mending?

November 14, 2014 9:14 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #7

seeing as how they were put away around the year -2000 AR (verified by Beyer who is a Wizards employee) and the mending happened around 4300 AR its safe to say they were put away very pre-mending.

So my understanding is we have a number of pre-mending walkers in our current canon (ie: Lili, Sorin, and Bolas.)

Timelines is where I draw the line I think...too much thinking...

Bolas and Sorin are the oldest walkers that are still alive. Sorin's birth year is said to have been around -2400 AR. so i guess he was at least 400 when they locked the eldrazi away but thats just a rough estimate based on when Beyer says it happened and when he's thought to have been born.

so besides them, we have Karn, Ugin (if you count him as being in current canon) and Teferi, as for the walkers that are known to still be around currently that were alive before the mending. and then Nahiri, the lithomancer, if she is still around which they just made an EDH card for her but that doesnt mean anything. quite a lot of the walkers don't have a birthdate listed so who knows if thats all.

Something occurred to me MindAblaze!.

If they go back in time to right before Bolas kills Ugin and defeat/kill Bolas would that prevent the events of Alara involving Ajani and his brother? (That was the event that sparked Ajani) Would that prevent Tezzeret from helping the phyrexians on Mirrodin?

Imagine the ripple effect if they go back in time and kill Bolas...

Yeah, it's crazy really. The entire multiverse would look different. Even if Bolas doesn't die every decision he may make with the knowledge that Ugin is still alive could potentially be different.

its pretty safe to say they won't be killing Bolas, he's far too powerful. perhaps what might happen is, they go back trying to find Ugin but can't because they just don't know where he is geographically, so knowing they're running out of time they do some sort of spell that makes all dragons on Tarkir time travel forward to current time in order to get Ugin back the quick and easy way and by doing so thats why all the other dragons come back, so Sarkhan's happy about that and hence we get dragon cards printed.

Cosi's Trickster, or at least a functional reprint, could be really cool to see between now and M16, especially if we get the ZEN fetches

I was thinking that due to the repercussions of Ugin still being alive, WotC will still kill Ugin, but he will pass on his knowledge of colorless magic to Sarkhan, allowing him to team up with Sorin to go fight the Eldrazi.

It kind of makes sense, as once Sarkhan knows Bolas's plan, he's gonna be all "We'll I'm gonna try and fuck that up!"

I've also been the thinking of the likelihood of a colourless Ugin, and I'm wondering if it won't happen, due to the fact that he could be played in every single deck.

shinobigarth says... #16

how about Sarkhan and Ugin merging their beings together right before Bolas kills him (so he thinks that he did) and have a shared consciousness inside Sarkhan's body, leading to a new Sarkhan card where his ultimate reflects Ugin taking control and going into "scary dragon creature mode at the beginning of each combat"?

COUNTERSPELL!!!!!!!!! the original one. Because standard needs more counterspells.

November 21, 2014 11:27 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #20

yeah because 17 counters with 2 sets still to go just isn't enough. those poor blue players.

Doom Blade. I want them back!!!!!!

Shadow of Doubt and Smother. Also Mana Leak and Serum Visions would be nice.

Can you tell I play U/B control???

Actually Sun Droplet is my best Idea for a reprint against aggro. The lifegain would be great.

I miss Doom Blade too. It might not be super effective in the current meta though
