My land theory

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

First i think the releasing of the painlands had a purpose. The purpose was to allow fetches to be in the zendikar block.

With the way Wotc has been doing their policy involving lands, they want a full cycle every block. Here's how i think it'll work

Origins- enemy

Bfz1- allied

Bfz2- enemy (possible fetches here)

Set after - enemy

Set after allied.

This puts them almost on a schedule and over all makes sense to me.

What do you guys think?

JWiley129 says... #2

My only point, is that there usually aren't 5 rare land slots in a small set. That may change because 1.) This is return to Zendikar and 2.) the new block schedule makes 10 rare lands hard to fit.

But I definitely agree with BFZ having an allied set of lands.

For all we know they could reprint the refuges in bfz1

That would pretty much make sense

June 27, 2015 8:30 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #4

But the refuges were uncommon lands. they'd be pretty crappy as rare lands. E.g. Jwar Isle Refuge.

June 27, 2015 8:37 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #5

No i mean they would do refuges to allow room for fetches as rares in the other set.

Or i may have misread? I'm unsure haha

June 27, 2015 8:44 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #7

What I mean is that each set only gets a certain number of rares/mythics. E.g. In Theros block, Theros had 5 rare lands, BNG had 3, and JOU had 2. Five rare lands in a small set is a lot. Now there were the man-lands in Worldwake, so there can be an exception. But I wouldn't hold my breath until I see it.

All sets are relatively the same size now. No more big small and small.

What I really wish is that wizards would complete the Horizon Canopy cycle and also the River of Tears cycle.

Could you imagine how amazing a River of Tears cycle would be in standard with fetches? I can.

Wonder if they will ever complete those cycles.

square711 says... #10

They did complete the Graven Cairns cycle, so I think they're doing it for all the "weird lands" that were in Future Sight, sooner or later. Then again, River of Tears just makes so much sense in U/B (as someone said in the Modern discussion thread, "black for discard, blue for counterspells") I'm not too excited about seeing it in other colors. Horizon Canopy and Grove of the Burnwillows are a different story, though.

Or just make enemy-colored fastlands. Come on. My Orzhov decks need those.

June 27, 2015 11:06 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #11

I think that Grove of the Burnwillows is the least likely to be completed, with the Horizon Canopy cycle being second least likely. But that's just me.

:c RIP convo

JWiley129 says... #13

Rasta_Viking29 - Not really, here are the recent set sizes:

  • Theros - 249
  • Born of the Gods - 165
  • Journey into Nyx - 165
  • Khans of Tarkir - 269
  • Fate Reforged - 185
  • Dragons of Tarkir - 264
  • Battle for Zendikar - 274

So there is still quite a size difference.

Sorry, VampireArmy, but set size is relevant to rare land cycles.

From the Metamorphis article

"Starting with "Blood" block in September 2015, each block will have one large set that introduces the world and one small set that builds upon it."

So my theory of Allied - Enemy - Allied seems somewhat correct but something I hadn't considered originally

There's going to be 3 different blocks always legal in standard. Can't find the quote now for some reason.

June 27, 2015 11:53 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #15

VampireArmy - That's in the same article. Standard will end up rotating every 6 months, as blocks will stay legal for 18 months, so that leaves 3 blocks being Standard legal.

VampireArmy says... #16

I can revise my theory to this then.

Large set - Rare land

Small set - No land or non rare land

Fixing every other set?

June 27, 2015 11:58 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #17

It depends on how Development (which handles mana fixing in Standard) wants to split up the rare lands. If they want to do 5 rare lands in each set, they can do that. It could limit how they do the full 10 dual lands, like they did in Theros. But I feel like R&D is figuring/has figured out how mana fixing will work in the new block format.

I guess we'll have our answer in BFZ. I just like thinking about useless shit like this :)

All I'm saying is that there's going to be some pretty pissed off people if we don't see fetch reprints soon...

June 28, 2015 12:30 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #20

TheDevicer - We got the Allied fetches in Tarkir. That has to count for something. I for one, don't think the enemy fetches will be in BFZ.

June 28, 2015 12:41 a.m.

SimicPower says... #21

Why are people assuming enemy fetches won't be in BFZ? After Theros rotates there with be 5 allied lands and 5 enemy lands in standard, so I think either an allied cycle or enemy cycle makes sense. I think enemy fetches make the most sense like how shocklands saw a reprint in RTR.

June 28, 2015 1:56 a.m.

Hjaltrohir says... #22

And they desperately need a reprint...

June 28, 2015 2:01 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #23

The only way that's going to happen is if they either

A) decide to split up the printing (3 in the big - 2 in the small)

B) Decide to print 5 in the small set.

With the way they have the structure set, I can almost promise they won't be in BFZ1. Of course I couldn't know for sure but c'mon. double enemy lands? sounds too weird.

June 28, 2015 2:05 a.m.

SimicPower says... #24

It does sound a little odd, but it is not something they haven't done before. (I am thinking Sunpetal Grove cycle in M11 and Razorverge Thicket cycle in Scars)

My Theory for Origins land....

Non bold = already spoiled
Bold Italic = Theory

242 - Veteran's Sidearm
243 - Arcane Sanctum
244 - Battlefield Forge
245 - Caves of Koilos
246 - Crumbling Necropolis
247 - Jungle Shrine
248 - Llanowar Wastes
249 - Savage Lands
250 - Seaside Citadel
251 - Shivan Reef
252 - Yavimaya Coast

Fits into the current spoiled card numbers, and completes the Uncommon cycle of tri-lands.

June 29, 2015 8:53 a.m. Edited.

SimicPower says... #26

Hmm... Only Bant is a plane that we visit in Origins. On the other hand, all of those lands have somewhat generic names that might be able to be fit elsewhere. New art, I guess?

June 29, 2015 12:14 p.m.

jchudz says... #27

The ally bounce lands would also be able to squeeze in those slots as well.

243 Azorius Chancery

244Battlefield Forge

245 Caves of Koilos

246 Dimir Aqueduct

247 Gruul Turf

248 Llanowar Wastes

249 Rakdos Carnarium

250 Selesnya Sanctuary

251 Shivan Reef

252 Yavimaya Coast

June 29, 2015 11:28 p.m.

Rayenous says... #28

At this point, I would hope Wizards would have the good sense to finish a cycle before printing another half cycle. - Then again, we did just get the enemy pain lands, again, instead of the allied ones.

Named_Tawyny says... #29

Really tricky of Wizards, holding back "War Horn" to make us think there was room for a second cycle of 5 lands. =)

As long there's some enemy-colors manlands, I'm happy.
