New blue cards designed not to combo off

Hi, I just wanted to state that it sucks that wizards keep throwing blue cards at us that won't combo off rightfully. They designed Origins so it would not properly combo with Tarkir in standart.

Taken a look at the new Jace, -3 cast shit from your grave. Why is that bad? Because stuff like Temporal Trespass exiles itsself and Narset Transcendent only rebounds cards cast from your hand. See what I mean? Instead of giving us the opportunity for self-mill and delve for 2 extra turns or playing blue-white rebound, where 1 sorcery or instant would hit the stack 4 times with Jace + Narset, wizards keeps the combos low. That sucks! They should not look at previous sets or sets currently beeing in standart when designing new cards!

I don't suppose you're aware that set design is a largely exclusive process that places the primary emphasis on Limited and only makes secondary considerations regarding other formats.

So basically you want them to break Magic? Go play Vintage.

Set creations take place years in advance. They were probably still designing Origins when Theros was being released.

To be fair, designing in advance is not a reason that designs would or would not account for other sets. If you shift the entire production schedule forward, then you still know what else has been designed.

They're playing it very safe this time around. There's no way they're gonna repeat a mistake like Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time again, especially not even a year after Khans came out. Also, what Epochalyptik said about set design.

Oh, and I almost forgot: Both of these cards are blue. Coincidence? I think not.

Honestly Dig and Cruise are not a mistake or a product of oversight. They are both solid and balanced in Limited and Standard. Mission achieved. They don't design cards for Modern or Legacy and shouldn't for reasons like this. It didn't work out in those formats and it's not a big deal because they can just ban problem cards and play what already works.

Epochalyptik is mostly right. They design sets with Limited and Standard in mind. Remember that Liliana of the Veil was almost in M15, but she was too powerful for what WotC wanted in Standard and so she was cut. Because of this Siege Rhino was changed to what it is now from a 3/4 with trample and the Obstinate Baloth discard clause.

Also, combo has not been a part of Standard for some time now. And no, Jeskai Ascendancy does not count. The last combo deck I think was big in Standard was Deceiver Exarch + Splinter Twin in Zendikar + Scars Standard. Now, I wasn't playing during that time, so I may be incorrect. So complaining about "lack of combo" is falling on deaf ears.

If you want combo, play modern. Or Legacy. Or vintage. Standard isn't necessarily the place that wizards want combo's dominate, since they pretty much own the other 3 notable constructed formats. Plus, there are still plenty of okayish combos in the set. Jeskai Ascendancy for example. They built it knowing full well that Elvish Mystic, Rattleclaw Mystic, Dragon Mantle, Briber's Purse, Retraction Helix, Defiant Strike, etcetera would be in the format. They exist, they just don't dominate standard for a reason.
