So apparently this is a thing. The new Basic Land seems to be a backwards Phyrexian symbol, where the land can produce * or 1, instead of the Phyrexian symbol on the spell for 1 color or 2 life. This looks highly interesting to me.

I'm totally hyped for the colorless/star basic lands, but a bit let down by the new Kozilek. Not really going to be played anywhere besides standard and he(?) has pretty "meh" abilities for a 10-drop. Sure, you draw some cards, but I'm not going to feel menaced by a 12/12 with some evasion. The countering ability is interesting but way too linear.

FAMOUSWATERMELON Are you talking about Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger? Because that's a "spoiled" Kozilek at 10 CMC for a 12/12 body that refills your hand......pretty OP.

DrFunk27 I'm not impressed. It has no protection from removal, and it's pretty much a vanilla 12/12 with a bit of evasion once you get past the cast trigger. The counterspell will almost never happen, especially in Standard.
I like the flavor text though :)

FAMOUSWATERMELON I'm not overly impressed either, but I think it's pretty powerful. What removal are you talking about? When this gets released there will be little to no removal in the set, outside of Ruinous Path. lol

Hold up, though. Isn't this technically 8 mana and 2... I dunno, colorless Phyrexian mana? Because if it works the same way as Phyrexian mana, you could pay 8 mana and 4 life for this instead of 10. And I'll be honest; it looks much better at 8 mana instead of 10.

KillDatBUG I don't think that's the Phyrexian mana sign. I think it's more likely it's a new Colorless Basic land. It would be cool though if it were phyrexian mana, but I don't understand why they would bring that back in this block.

Just a few observations a couple and friends and I had:
-The new mana symbol and basic land seem like a block mechanic, not a small set mechanic. Why wasn't Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger done like this?
-Kozilek both reloading your hand and including discarding a card to counter a spell seems like a two-card thing, not a two-in-one package. The card is too blue to be colorless.

Yeah, I think that's is the "required Colorless Mana" bit is the weird triangle thing.
Also Karn, Silver Golem and Kozilek, Butcher of Truth are now easily EDH playable. YAY.

The counter will often happen, out of 7 cards you have lots of ways to control the game with Kozilek.

vishnarg I don't think so. Remember, you'll be playing ramp, which means a rather large array of CMC. It'll probably happen once or twice, but not more than that. And in Tron (in modern), you'll have a lot of high costing spells that will be pretty useless.

I think the way it works is that Wastes produces colorless mana only. And the symbol means "you can't use colored mana to pay for this cost."

Just brainstorming this. WHAT IF instead of creating a new color, this land actually made ANY color out of the 5 pre-existing?
My reasoning is, if this new color is really a new color, and is not a symbol for an alternate mana cost such as 1 colorless or the new symbol, literally every card that is made with the new symbol will be unplayable in every format, because you are required to play the new Wastes. There would be no way to fetch for it, etc. Seems like a complete waste if it's just a new color and not the symbol for alternate mana costs like Phyrexian mana.

So, making any color is clearly broken. However, I expect that there will be a land cycle like "Island - Taps for U or Weird Eldrazi Mana Thingy" so that they're fetchable and make colors.
Also, I think that Kozilek seems pretty real. Colorless K at 004 makes sense, and he has the same fake-full-art thing that Newlamog has. I'm no expert, but it does have a lot of attention to detail.

? Why not make the land just add ? Like I said before, there has to be something else because Wizards doesn't like to over complicate things if they don't need to.

But of course, if they're using it as payment for specific spells, they NEEDED to make it basic. It wouldn't do to be only allowed to run four wastes in your deck. Not with multiple mana symbols for spells.
