Official Spoiler Thread.

Have at it.

Pretty good set.

Some disappointments with cards that probably could have been modern playable but ended up not - but that's the way things go sometimes. The new BG manland in particular is just bad.

But overall, that aside, the sets pretty nice.

You could already make big Veteran Warleaders with Sigil of Valor. Stoneforge Masterwork is for Warrior decks since the rotation absolutely annihilated that deck. Secure the Wastes becomes Secure the Win.

i think a fair amount of people right now are looking at each eldrazi creature spoiled to see if there is going to be one that makes the B/x eldrazi decks even better than they already are, since its going to come in oath if anywhere. kozilek's return is a definite addition in one version, but im thinking another creature is whats needed, and endbringer or more likely kozilek itself might go into it

Brolamog_the_Infinite_Higher - I don't know, with a few exceptions, KTK seems of a rather neutral powerlevel, whilst BFZ just seems like its cards are generally unplayable.

Compare Karns to Innistrad, Return to Ravnica, Scars of Mirrodin, and Zendikar. Does Karns really seem that powerfull then?

Nah, I think BFZ just plain out sucks.

Yes I knew the oaths were a cycle. Oath of nissa looks fun for superfriends. The fumarole is just bad

One mana Anticipate that fixes mana should be playable. Could be really good.

UR manland is pretty good. Seems like a good tool for crontrol and other threat light decks to close games out.

January 1, 2016 11:24 a.m.

TheNextRedDude says... #9

Note you can switch the P/T multiple times a turn, so the land is always out of bolt range.

January 1, 2016 11:33 a.m.

Yeah the UR manland will see modern play in Twin and possibly even delver, although I doubt the latter.

If damage still stacked though, that thing would be pretty insane.

January 1, 2016 11:44 a.m. Edited.

mtgThaen says... #11

Yep. Too bad damage mo longer goes on the stack...

January 1, 2016 11:49 a.m.

mtgThaen says... #12

Quick question: if someone bolts the manland, then I switch P/T, will it hit for one or four?

January 1, 2016 11:57 a.m.

It makes sense though, because if I cut off your head you don't get a chance to punch me.

January 1, 2016 11:58 a.m.

smackjack says... #14

I like the UR land. Cost one too much for it to be amazing, but its good.

January 1, 2016 noon

Ashockfan says... #15

I'm pretty sure the damage stays on, right? So if you attack with the 1/4 and he bolts, switching to the 4/1 will immediately kill the manland

Also, I really like the manland, great design.

Is there any sort of combo with it? Are there any cards that do something every time an ability is activated? Cuz then we could go infinite with this even through any removal since u can just activate again infinitely in response to the removal.

Really interested if there's a combo to be found here.

January 1, 2016 12:03 p.m.

mtgThaen says... #16

That would make sense.

January 1, 2016 12:06 p.m.

JANKYARD_DOG says... #17

TL:DR. Think General Tazri would make for a good Commander for an ally based deck? Given his identity is all 5 colors you have access to every ally in existance and can fetch any you need provided you have the mana.

January 1, 2016 12:20 p.m.

From LSV's article on the manland: Power/toughness switching is complicated, and I anticipate this leading to more than a few judge calls. If your opponent has one of these and tries to make it a 4/1, you should cast your burn spell in response. No matter how many times they switch, eventually your spell will resolve, and this will switch back into a 4/1, at which point it dies. Knowing that timing is important, and should cover most of the cases where this could be tricky.

Tazri is female, but I think she's way better than Karona, False God, so that's a start. As for how competitive she would be, I'd say Tier 2-3, probably towards the 3 end.

January 1, 2016 12:33 p.m.

Ashockfan I was thinking the exact same thing. There is a combo that works with hearthstone, where if you have something giving a creature a passive buff, (like Legion's Initiative would give the fumarole +1/+0) and then if you switched its power and toughness, the buffed stat would stay, and then the bonus would apply again, (2/4 fumarole switch into 4/2, gets buff, becomes 5/2, switches again, becomes 2/5, gets buff, becomes 3/5). If this applies to Magic, then you can go infinite with fumarole.

January 1, 2016 12:33 p.m.

Nightdragon779 um... ew. no. bad Hearthstone player. :P

Seriously though, that's absolutely not the case in Magic. It just gets the static buff, though it would apply whether it's a 1/4 or a 4/1.

January 1, 2016 1:08 p.m.

Nobody else excited for Oath of Nissa? At one mana the effect is really strong, I'm preordering it for sure.

January 1, 2016 1:19 p.m.

Yeah it's great.

January 1, 2016 1:21 p.m.

I don't run enough Superfriends-oriented decks to really have it merit a spot in any of them. I mean, my Intet EDH deck has 5 'Walkers in it, and even then I'd be hard-pressed to find a place where I could make a cut.

January 1, 2016 1:23 p.m.

...What does Ceaseless Searblades have anything to do with our current topic of conversation? Unless there's just something painfully obvious here that I'm missing, which is possible, considering I am the Derp Master himself.

January 1, 2016 1:34 p.m.

sergiodelrio says... #28

Going infinite with the new man land? Or am I derping right now? xD

January 1, 2016 1:36 p.m.

CuteSnail says... #29

I'm missing it as well.

January 1, 2016 1:36 p.m.

Phaetion says... #30

Activate Fumarole's P/T switching ability an infinite number of times, and make Ceaseless Searblades Infinite/4.

WEEEE! A new Modern deck! /sarcasm.

January 1, 2016 1:37 p.m.

mtgThaen says... #31

Too bad the oath enchantments aren't tribal enchantments. "Legendary Tribal Enchantment - Planeswalker" so Jace's could be useful by itself and so that Call the Gatewatch could have more utility.

January 1, 2016 1:45 p.m.

Ashockfan says... #32

Nice boys we found the combo! (Lol jk it's bad, unless it can go in some kind of already existing deck that can give it trample)

January 1, 2016 1:47 p.m.

sergiodelrio never even heard of that card, but it works. Now we can add a Ceaseless Searblades and a wandering fumarole to our splinter twin decks. 2 infinite combos in one deck. Fuck

January 1, 2016 1:49 p.m.

Ashockfan ok twin decks splash for Kessig Wolf Run, happy?

January 1, 2016 1:50 p.m.

sergiodelrio says... #35

Well Ashockfan, you can always Fling it!

January 1, 2016 1:51 p.m.

Ashockfan says... #36

Lol I might actually brew this. I was thinking about Kessig Wolf Run as the most common trample giver, but didn't know twin decks played it.

January 1, 2016 1:57 p.m.

Or you can Aqueous Form it, there are a lot of ways to kill someone once you have a creature with infinite power

January 1, 2016 1:57 p.m.

TobyG says... #38

Considering that Mardu is the best at super friends, I think oath of Chandra and oath of Gideon will be much more relevant.

January 1, 2016 2:06 p.m.

Chandrian says... #39

just go Temur Battle Rage if you want trample with that combo.

January 1, 2016 2:25 p.m.

Kroto says... #40

I'm guessing Chandra's oath will do x damage and Gideon's oath gives +x/+x where x is the number of planeswalkers under your control.

January 1, 2016 2:31 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #41

In commander, bant seems to be the best for superfriends.

January 1, 2016 2:33 p.m.

Ashockfan says... #42

Well battle rage the double strike is pointless because he's has infinite power. And I'm sure there's easier trample givers, such as kessig wolf run

January 1, 2016 2:41 p.m.

NarejED says... #43

Plenty of cheap global trample spells like Nylea, God of the Hunt.

January 1, 2016 2:44 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #44

Kessig is probably the best card for it since it doesn't waste a slot since its a land.

January 1, 2016 3:48 p.m.

Ashockfan says... #45

Yea that's my thought process as well

January 1, 2016 4:12 p.m.

Ok I'm thinking a Scapeshift deck that uses this combo, it can grab both the Kessig Wolf Run and the fumarole for 4 mana (along with the valakut combo).

January 1, 2016 4:16 p.m.

beakedbard says... #47

So if the Oaths are a set will there be a black one as well and who the hell is that supposed to be? Nixilis? Liliana? Sorin? The first seems impossible because he's one of the antagonists of the storyline and wants to destroy Zendikar. The second is possible but highly unlikely because she said she didn't want to get involved in this. The third also seems impossible because he's meant to be searching for Nahiri. I can't think of any other black planeswalker that could do it and there's no black planeswalker in the oath picture.

tl;dr

Will there be a black oath or not?

January 1, 2016 4:53 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #48

It would be pretty cool to have an "Oath of Nixilis." I could see him swearing revenge on the Gatewatch/Zendikar/anything really if they manage to foil his plan for the plane's destruction.

Maybe discard when enters the battlefield and then "At the beginning of your upkeep, you may destroy up to X target creatures, where X is the number of planeswalkers you control."

January 1, 2016 4:58 p.m.

beakedbard says... #49

That's an interesting point the Oath doesn't have to be to help Zendikar or stop the Eldrazi.

January 1, 2016 5:01 p.m.

Kjartan says... #50

I think Nixi should trigger for Planeswlkers you don't control, as the other walkers are his enemies.
