With Modern Horizons... on the Horizon, what cards would you like to see printed into Modern for the first time? What new cards would you like to see?

I love burn so it would make my heart soar to see Chain Lightning , Fireblast or Price of Progress become modern legal. I imagine that Fireblast has a next to 0 chance of being in the set while the other two seem likely. Chain Lightning might not be in the set but I am confident that Price of Progress will be. Such a lovely card and a wonderful weapon for mono red burn decks. It would give burn specific strategies some serious gas but wouldn't break the 0 mana rule or be another cheap spell for Phoenix and Delver decks.

As for original cards I would like to see a land at common that has the ability to tap, sacrifice and pay 1 life to fetch a basic land.

A card like that would dramatically change the price point for players playing modern and legacy decks that are a single color.

That basic land fetch would be amazing. I would love that. (Or even a land that fetches an Island/Plains, but the fetched card must enter tapped.)

Price of Progress seems more likely than not, as well.

I think my ideal budget fetch would be

Tap: add a colorless Tap: sacrifice, search your library for a mountain (one for each type)

So you could still fetch for duels but less efficient than a normal fetch.

As far as other cards I'd love counter spell (which we should get) and some kind of new card advantage. I'd love to be able to play U delver

Give me Elvish Aberration damn’t! Also I always thought they should have a cycle of Beast Within with other colors.

- turn the creature into a 3/1 haste

- turn the creature into a 2/2 flyer.

- turn the creature into a 2/2 vigilance

- turn into a creature 1/1 deathtouch

Just for an idea

Shardless Agent would be cool because Simic is underplayed in Modern. Also cool would be Fire / Ice , and Dack Fayden is long overdue to be in Modern.

And while it’s really my own sick fantasy, I think it’d be dope if we got Grindstone . The Painter's Servant deck seems really weak in Legacy. Would a version without Pyroblast still be too good for Modern? Maybe

The chance for Price of Progress is nearly 0% if you ask me.

Likelihood of this being the set for Oubliette to get in?

I don´t think that Oubliette will be in the set. Looks too white nowadays for me. :-)

I also don't see Shardless Agent . Playtested it in Humans and I think it could give the deck too much of a power boost.

Anyone knows when official spoiler season begins?

Oh crap, forgot Shardless Agent was human. Guess that also rules out Mother of Runes -unless something like Cavern of Souls gets banned, 5c Humans is just always going to be too good.

Oh, I almost forgot! We might see Vindicate as well

I thought the whole point of Modern Horizons is create new cards for Modern that would otherwise be too problematic for Standard; not to just “Format-shift” several Legacy staples to turn Modern into “Legacy-lite”..

I am not sure I have any predictions for what will be in the set--there are, after all, thousands of cards that might be reprinted. I have a couple ideas of what we will not see though.

I do not expect them to shift many (if any) Legacy staples into Modern. My guess is that a lot of the reprints will be cards with unique, interesting effects, but that do not see play in competitive Legacy. I expect keeping Modern as a "turn 4 format" will be a primary goal of their reprints, so we shouldn't expect to see things like hyper-efficient burn cards that make a turn-3 victory relatively easy.

I think we can also reasonably expect cards will not be reprinted which break the colour pie or were based on an older view of the colour pie.

I do not expect we will see shroud, fear, or intimidate return, as they've largely been replaced with new keywords. Phasing and banding both could be really neat in Modern, but I'm not going to hold my breath--Wizards has made their dislike for the complexity of these two mechanics pretty clear. Of all the depreciated mechanics, I think Regenerate stands the best chance of being reprinted/having new cards--it's already a modern-legal mechanic, and has slightly different implications than "Indestructible until end of turn", the mechanic that replaced it.

I'm really excited for spoiler season for this set, particularly given how disappointing I found War of the Spark. I'm really hoping MaRo publishes an article explaining R&D's process for making and playtesting Modern Horizons, since it's much more ambitious than making a Standard-legal set.

I personaly would love to see a Astral Slide reprint along with the original cycle lands, but my hopes arn't too high. Who knows? Maybe they'll make a creature version like they did with Cabal Therapy .

I think bringing some classic UG Madness cards into Modern could maybe make that archetype somewhat of a thing. Those are mostly the kinds of reprints I'd like to see: ones that introduce totally new archetypes or at least archetypes that are no longer played in any format.

As for new cards, I think support for Myr tribal and Samurai would be neat, although I am very confident we won't see those in any form (and if we ever do, it'd probably be in a Commander product). However, I don't think more Ninja for Modern would be impossible, so that's something I'm REALLY hoping we get.

I really wish we could get a german Hymn to Tourach , but I don't believe it. :-(

Chasmolinker says... #16

Based on the way they did Cabal Therapist . I think we'll be getting creature shifted Legacy spells where the power level could warp Modern. For instance a blue creature with a one time activated ability that mimics Daze . Or a white creature with a one-shot Swords to Plowshares ability.

In the ideal world I would like to see Three Visits put into modern horizons, but would absolutely settle for Nature's Lore . The reason I would like to see that would be for Scapeshift decks. Wizards isn’t interested in printing efficient ramp in standard anymore. We get things like Nissa's Triumph or Hour of Promise . Either they are high costed and into play, or just get put into hand at low costed and the land is always tapped. I want efficient ramp into play untapped.

The only reprint that I'm fully expecting from Horizons is Containment Priest , what with all the Phoenix and Dredge decks going around. Other than that a new 1 mana 1/1 faerie rogue with flying would make my day, though there's a small chance that they'd print a creature with those exact traits... One can only hope.

April 29, 2019 11:48 p.m.

Eledain says... #19

Containment Priest would be a nice addition to the format and I think it will be in the set.

I really do hope for some new funny cards.

What do you guys think about Recruiter of the Guard and Imperial Recruiter or the Monarch cards like Palace Jailer ?

Sanctum Prelate would also be great.

Eledain

About your recruiter idea, counter company says hello.

April 30, 2019 9:56 a.m.

Standstill is a slower blue card I’d like to see put into modern.

If anything comes out of this set I don’t want any cards that just slot into tier 1-2ish decks (Maybe 3). This is the time to get some powerful cards that can’t be in standard into some lower powered decks or create new ones entirely. Burn, Scapeshift, Tron, etc don’t need anymore toys for the time being.

WAIT

Okay so we know modern horizons goes straight to... well, modern, but what about Frontier? Is she frontier-legal as well?

April 30, 2019 2:49 p.m.

@ZendikariWol That is an excellent question..

Unfortunately, I think they may not be Frontier-legal, on the grounds that it isn’t a “Standard-legal set”.. But then again, Modern has always had the same stipulation as well..

It’s hard to say..

I want to see Karoo lands printed at common.

May 1, 2019 10:33 p.m.

Chasmolinker says... #25

I want to see powered-down fetches. Either slow fetches (ALL 10) or some other variant (Enemy or all 10).

Also, some more color shifted stuff like Porphyry Nodes / Drop of Honey and Calciderm / Blastoderm .

May 2, 2019 9:51 a.m.

I thought we would never see color shifted cards in mass again till I found this.

Modern Horizons was originally dubbed as "Timespiral / Planar Chaos 2" in concept due to set complexity. Mark Rosewater has called it a a "love letter" to the Time Spiral block. It won't be an entry level set and has more than ten mechanics

Eledain says... #27

What do you think about:

Slow land is slow

~ enters the battlefield tapped.

T: Sac ~. Search your library for any one land card and put it onto the battlefield tapped.

Is it too op to search any land if you play two turns off curve there for?

Some colorshifted cards would be great. I'm a fan of cards like Mana Tithe or Piracy Charm . Such cards can really caught opponents off guard.

Everyone Else: “Yes”

Amulet of Vigor: “No” :)

May 2, 2019 5:14 p.m.

Chasmolinker says... #29

That would be Crop Rotation . Which i would love to see in modern.

May 2, 2019 5:43 p.m.

Chasmolinker says... #30

That would make legacy depths decks even faster.... or at least MORE consistent. And Lands would have a new toy as well. Search up any land by cracking a land seems overpowered. Tapped or not

DemonDragonJ says... #31

Reflecting Pool is not eligible to be reprinted in this set, because it is already legal in modern, which is very unfortunate, since it is much more expensive than it should be, so I would like to see lands such as Meteor Crater , Temple of the False God or Homeward Path reprinted in this set; WotC likely will want to keep Ancient Tomb only for EDH, legacy, and vintage.

May 4, 2019 12:59 a.m.

Homeward Path Would be sweet for my Dubious Challenge build maybe as a one of. Jeez two game ending fatties?? That's the kind of stuff we need in modern.
