Opinions on Brawl

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

For those of you that haven't seen, here is the link to the article.

I feel as though it is a neat idea, however far too niche to actually work. I strictly play edh, and this seems to be edh lite like tiny leaders. But unlike tiny leaders, I do not have the cards to make a deck for this because I don't play standard and most of the cards I would have to get to play this would be literal garbage to me after they would rotate. So I think this caters strictly toward standard players who also play edh or would like to get started playing edh. What are your opinions?

It would have been a million times better if it was modern, rather than standard.

The problem is it was 8th edition-current it would be even more competition with Commander and it would less popular.

PSA: New Brawl Banlist

Mothership" The Future of Brawl

Only Sorcerous Spyglass, Smuggler's Copter, and Baral, Chief of Compliance are banned, all other cards banned in standard are unbanned in Brawl.

I know my LGS does 1v1 Brawl tournaments, so this will help the format, and I look forward to non-combo use of Felidar Guardian.

I feel like it's healthy for the EDH format. I started playing just as RTR rotated out, so I have a much of crap bulk sitting around. The release of Brawl, imo, will have people learning about EDH and learning more about the tons of synergy out there. Brawl will also trigger both more Legendaries, Planeswalkers, and good cards for all formats. This will expand the amount of competitively viable cards for EDH players to use.

I am not, however, going to play Brawl because I feel it's just a way for WOTC to sell more packs because of the increasing misrust they are gathering due to the terrible sets they have been continuously releasing.

It's good that they had Richard Garfield, papa almighty, to get onto the Dominaria dev team and I look forward to the sets that I hope he'll be making with WOTC.

Really happy with the bans/unbans and the direction they are taking the format, also that those changes were managed by their Play Design team. The article is a good read and speaks well to Wizards' investment going forward. I'm glad they realise the potential of the format, and also understand how it caters to different players.

Now to finally get to play some cat tribal in standard with all 1617 cats across green and white (honourable mention to Windgrace Acolyte!).

The best move that WotC can make to promote Brawl is to release "Brawl Packs" with fixed cards to fix up the lame mana-base that is in Standard, which currently limits creativity and enjoyment in the format. The five Scry Lands from the Theros block in a booster pack for ten bucks, all stamped with a "B" for Brawl is what I'm talking about.

the problem is that every deck will quickly become rotated out. Its too expensive to keep building decks that dont stick around.

Perhaps they could make a modern format brawl called Melee?

Add planeswalkers as commanders in EDH?

I would want Mario for my commander in a card-mashing fest like "MTG Melee".

Or maybe Link.

Or maybe Charmander.

He would be my "Char-Commander".

Though... making a new format called "melee" would just give SiebenLore one more thing to mispronounce.

The best solution I have heard proposed for brawl would be a thing called “set identy”. Essentially, you can use your brawl decks for as long as you want, but you can only use the cards that were out during the standard rotation, either from first release or just before it rotates out.

Pros: This would solve the problems for both an extended format and a rotating format; the biggest turn off for extended players in a rotating format is that they won’t be able to play with their cards forever. This would allow that, but still gives a limited card pool that standard is known for.

Cons: After the set rotates out, old decks will live on in stagnation. There would be no more room for creativity in deck building for that old deck using Saheeli Rai after it rotates. You would never be able to add new cards from new expansions, only the set amount of cards. Instead of having a standard EDH format, we would have a block constructed format and we all see how well that did.

Furthermore, I think that trying to create a format that balances out the style of deck building of extended and rotating is inherently impossible. If brawl was extende, then in five years it will be another EDH but with 60 cards, just like frontier will be another modern when we return to return to ravnica, assuming the shocklands get reprinted. We would see the rise of baby-Jace decks in frontier, only eternal in nature.

If brawl remains rotating, it will always have a high fatality rate on players after rotation. People get turned off at not being able to play their cards, that is why i started in modern. All decks will also go through a transitory period when they lose two sets of cards, but only get one back for a few months.

I personally cannot speak about gameplay, as I have never played the format, but i do enjoy the idea of a less expensive EDH where I don’t have to commit the controversy of playing with proxy decks. I also think that brawl was greatly shaken up by the separate banlist, and that we will see if it dies come rotation.

Non-rotating singleton formats exist, it's not like there are not options if players prefer that. Brawl was created because there wasn't a standard friendly singleton format. Plenty of us enjoy rotation and see it as a positive part of playing constructed.

I think Brawl justifies its existence on its own terms, but I'm sure it will also provide plenty of on-ramping to the likes of EDH and Canadian Highlander.

Additionally, I think thanks to the way they changed FNM sanctioned Magic a year or two ago, you can propose 'Extended Brawl' as your format of choice at your LGS, if that's your thing.

I don't know if links are allowed, however over at Affinity for Commander we've just uploaded a podcast all centered around Brawl and our experiences playing it :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l87dOQWSu60&t=1221s

If you try to lock Brawl into a "set identity" style format you will run into the issue of stronger sets beating up on weaker sets. This will constrain deck building options in a negative way, which I am not sure that is very healthy for the format.

I am more interested to see how this format influences upcoming sets. From the Mothership article posted a few comments above it, sounds like Wizards is all in on Brawl and plan to include Brawl cards in future sets. Will the new "type" (for a lack of a better word) of cards take up spots that were reserved for limited? Standard? Reprints? One could make the argument that cards which are clearly designed for EDH are also for Brawl and vice versa, but the article specifically mentions cards for Brawl. I am just curious to see how this impacts new sets.

I think it will impact limited more than Standard. Most “good in Commander” cards printed in recent Standard sets have seen very little Standard play.
