Origins Planeswalker Ability Speculation

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Posted on June 3, 2015, 6:47 p.m. by CheeseBro

What do you guys think the unspoiled planeswalkers/legendary creatures (Gideon, Jace, Chandra, and Nissa) abilities will do?

My Guesses:

Chandra: Lots of Burn, ultimate maybe a la Pyromancer Ascension

Jace: Probably Mill/Draw, ultimate maybe a la Traumatize

Gideon: Probably weenie stuff like tokens, ultimate maybe like emblem: At the beginning of each end step, put 5 1/1 White soldier creature tokens onto the battlefield under your control.

Nissa: Either elves or Ramp, im not sure. Ultimate might be a la biorythm if elves and making lands 8/8's a la Liege of the Tangle if ramp.

If you could give your thoughts on what you want the planeswalker's abilities to do (not just the ultimate) that would be great.

Cant wait for Origins!

I think Gideon will be mono blue or u/b and will be a counterspell on a stick. I think origins will finally get the mono white Jace I've been coveting all these years. Chandra and Nissa will both be red and making a power grab for the ultimate as a red female walker.

Also your speculations happen to be largely generic. Your Jace and Nissa have always done what you predict, so congrats to the obvious. Your Chandra ultimate will never happen because Ascension already exists and requires a specific build to work.

I should apologize for sounding like a jerk.. buuut......

Chandras transform will probably be triggered by connecting in combat, or based on an opponent taking a certain amount of damage in a turn (4 or so?) and deal 2-3 damage to target creature or player when it trasforms.

There's a card that's been going around called Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh that flips to Chandra, Roaring Flame.

Regigigas23, I've read that that Chandra is fake.

Aww I was hoping it was real, that final ability was great.

On another note I was thinking of Jace's ability also. Since he wiped his own memory, maybe he could do that to opponents in a strong Fatespinner ultimate ability like "Choose untap step, main phase of combat step. Each opponent skips all of the chisen phases on their turns."

Nissa, Mother of Nature

Whenever an elf enters the battlefield under your control, exile Nissa, Mother of Nature and return it to the battlefield transformed. When Nissa leaves the battlefield, search your library for a basic land card and put it into play tapped.

+2: Tap a land target player controls, add one mana of any color to your mana pool.

0: Choose one: Search your library for a land card and put it into your hand, OR, search your library for up to two basic land cards, put one into play tapped and the other in your hand.

-5: Reveal X cards from the top of your library equal to the number of lands you control, you may put X nonland cards with converted mana cost X or less onto the battlefield.

3

This is something like what I hope for Nissa.

Note: if you consider this posted to the wrong forum, sorry, I felt it was relevant here.

That is quite overpowered. An additional land a turn at 0 and a -5 (maybe it should be -7) that lets you place permanents?

June 5, 2015 6:37 a.m.

Whoops, I thought I had fixed it to a -2

June 5, 2015 6:48 a.m.

And you're probably right.

Snapcaster Jace -

Flash

When Snapcaster Jace enters the battlefield, target instant or sorcery card in your graveyard gains flashback until end of turn. The flashback cost is equal to its mana cost. (You may cast that card from your graveyard for its flashback cost. Then exile it.)

Whenever you cast a spell from your graveyard, exile Snapcaster Jace, then return him to the battlefield transformed under it's owners control. Discard your hand and draw cards equal to the number discarded this way plus 1.

Jace, the Mind Reconstructor

+2: Each player draws a card.
-1: Draw two cards, then put a card from your hand on top of your library in any order.
-11: Exile all cards from target player's library, then that player shuffles his or her hand into his or her library.

Starting Loyalty: 6

Okay... all that's a little silly and over powered.
But if they make Jace's transform ability as easy to activate as Lilliana's, it will either be something like what I used, or the same as Delver of Secrets  Flip.

Jace creature proboaly will be like Delver of Secrets  Flip, not Snapcaster Mage. Also, his ultimate wont be Jace, the Mind Sculptor. Otherwise, sounds right.

You know I really wish the black plains walker worked against every single jund/abzan discard deck instead of helping them out.

Luckily I'm playing dimir atm so i'll speculate on jace:

Normal Side

Name: Jace the Mindmaster
Cost:
Creature - Human Wizard

Text: Whenever you draw three cards in one turn or an opponent draws two cards in one turn exile Jace the Mindmaster, then return him to the battlefield under his owners control. If you do, look at the top 3 cards of your library and put one of them into your hand.

Power/Toughness = 1/2 or 2/3. I think should be a 1/2. Why? Because Chandra is gonna be going after him in the Volcanic Fallout. Heh heh heh. Also his function as a creature is to stop people from using cards like Ponder, Serum Visions, Gitaxian Probe and others because if an opponent uses those cards then the person with Jace gets a free card from the top 3 and gets to X-Form Jace.

Planeswalker Side

+2: Each player draws a card
-2: Draw a card for each card in target players hand
-8: You get an emblem with "Whenever an opponent draws a card, you may draw a card"
Starting Loyalty = 2

Jace is the ultimate Planeswalker when it comes to mental acuity. If you have an idea then Jace can have it to. I mean he's a walker strong enough that Ral Zarek had to keep yelling at him "Stay out of my head!" I believe these abilities really point out what he excels at, which is unlimited creativity and the ability to match anyone in terms of wits. (Well except for Niv Mizzet maybe. Maybe?)

Hm you know what? As is the card is nearly useless in modern. Mainly because it'll be crushed by either or decks with Delver of Secrets  Flip and Lightning Bolt.

There is one thing we could do. For this card, which is powerful and flavorful yet fails to the meta in modern and probably legacy. We could give him Flash. Against non Delver decks this would be wicked strong, but then, his abilities are quite useless unless the opponent is using can-trips anyways right? Since there are no more costed cantrips, like ever gonna happen again, I think this lil guy would be fine in standard as well.
