Other Non-Basic Lands in Khans?

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Think this block will see more nonbasic lands besides the three-color taplands and fetches? I'd like to see some utility lands and flavorful lands, Seems like Theros was kind of lacking in that department.

So based on the world-building panel at PAX, here are some ideas:

Crocodile Pit

Land

Crocodile Pit enters the battlefield tapped.

: Add to your mana pool.

, , sacrifice a creature: Put a 3/2 blue Lizard creature token with swampwalk onto the battlefield.

Maw of the Fire Rim

Legendary Land

, pay 1 life: Add to your mana pool.

Morph- Reveal X red cards from your hand.

When Maw of the Fire Rim is turned face up, it deals X damage to target creature or player.

What, if any, other nonbasic lands do you see coming to KTK?

VampireArmy says... #2

You cray...fetches, Tricolor AND something else?

So I can definitely see a bunch of them in the block as a whole but I doubt they will be printed in the first set due to wedge lands and fetches. That being said, I really like your card designs although crocodile pit seems blue black not just blue and also a little overpowered IMO

Notice I said "block", not "set."

Also yeah, Crocodile Pit needs tweaking... Maybe pay instead?

Late night misread ftw. In that case i think some sort of morph land is possible...though they might just finish the fetch cycle and call it a block

Or could work for the Pit as well.

Here's another one:

Grinding Glacier

Land

: Add to your mana pool.

, : Target player puts the top two cards of his or her library in to his or her graveyard.

Facilitates mill and could help Sultai graveyard stuff. I would be pretty bummed if we didn't see at least a few utility lands in the block.

Ahh yes the good old 2 am misread. My bad

Ehhh it's partially my bad. KTK is the set abbreviation, but the set has the same name as the block so... It's understandable.

So we've heard from a few peoples (at the World Building Panel explicitly) that the Fetches are "very well suited to environment". Now that could be for fixing, but as they specifically look for Swamps etc. and not basic lands, could we see non basic lands with basic land types? Like that cycle of them from Shadowmoor? Utility lands that only tap for one colour, come in tapped but have a useful ability for their clan.

Very much like the Grinding Glacier by subrosian above. I could see a Temur temporary pump one (to make Ferocious easier), a haste giving Mardu one, a +1/+1 counter granting Abzan one, a self milling Sultai one and for Jeskai... well i'm sure they'd think of something :P Maybe instant and sorcery pseudo flashback to make Prowess more repeatable?

So, a cycle of utility lands with basic types? Maybe with ETB effects to work well with fetches?

Sandstorm Shelter

Land- Plains

(: Add to your mana pool.)

Sandstorm Shelter enters the battlefield tapped.

When Sandstorm Shelter enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on up to one creature you control.

Lakeside Shrine

Land- Island

(: Add to your mana pool.)

Lakeside Shrine enters the battlefield tapped.

When Lakeside Shrine enters the battlefield, exile the top card of your library. You may play cards exiled with Lakeside Shrine.

Fuming Bog

Land- Swamp

(: Add to your mana pool.)

Fuming Bog enters the battlefield tapped.

When Fuming Bog enters the battlefield, target player puts the top three cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard.

Warg-Run Canyon

Land- Mountain

(: Add to your mana pool.)

Warg-Run Canyon enters the battlefield tapped.

When Warg-Run Canyon enters the battlefield, target creature you control gains haste until end of turn. Because Smoldering Spires is already a thing.

Frosted Undergrowth

Land- Forest

(: Add to your mana pool.)

Frosted Undergrowth enters the battlefield tapped.

When Frosted Undergrowth enters the battlefield, target creature you control gets +1/+1 and gains trample until end of turn.

Last time we had Vivid lands, tricolor lands and mutavault in standard was... Well. pretty nice, actually.

This is what I'm hoping for:

After the second set, I'm hoping the third set will be wedges with the focus on the "right" color (since they said that the wonky color focus had a point but they couldn't explain it yet) and that they will complete the cycle of fetches.

Because of that, and the prediction that fate reforged will be mono colored, I'm hoping for mono fetches. They'd probably be uncommons, which would mean modern could finally be played requiring you to spend so much money on lands. In standard, they wouldn't be played more than the dual fetches.

I am more than just hoping for this, I'm praying for it.

A cycle of enemy color manlands would be a nice way of rounding out Modern and Standard. Specifically, a card like Celestial Colonnade or Creeping Tar Pit would be awesome.

Alas, I doubt Wat See will let us have nice things.

subrosian says... #14

Maybe we won't get that sort of thing until another land-focused set... Who knows? I'm just speculating because of the fetch lands, and because by the time I got into Magic, Innistrad and all of its cool lands were out of Standard. Never got to make a silly deck based on Alchemist's Refuge :P

black manland.

Abzan Kin Tree

Land

~ enters the battlefield tapped.

: Put three white Spirit creature tokens with flying and haste onto the battlefield. Exile them at the beginning of the next end step.

In times of war, the ancestors rise to fight with their kin.

September 6, 2014 8:17 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #17

Why would they have haste? If anything they'd be mardu to have haste

September 6, 2014 8:21 a.m.

hyperlocke says... #18

I know it's not in the colors but I didn't want them to stay on the battlefield, because when there isn't war, the ancestors rest. Maybe if it created only two tokens they could stay...

September 6, 2014 8:34 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #19

Hmm.....not sure. 3 mana (4 if you count the land tapping itself) for an upgraded Moorland Haunt without the need to exile things seems a little op

September 6, 2014 8:38 a.m.

With the Fetches being reprinted, i'm going to guess the ABUR will be in the same block.

September 6, 2014 9 a.m.

hyperlocke says... #21

Well, it is strong, but not OP, I think. I could be wrong, though. I just read the Planeswalker's Guide to Khans and wanted the Kin Tree to be a land. This was the first thing that came to my mind.

Like sylvannos said, I would really love some man lands for the other 5 colors. I just feel it wont happen because that would be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much mana fixing.

September 6, 2014 9:19 a.m.

abenz419 says... #23

I forget what article I read it in, but they did say that there would be tons of mana fixing. Whether that was referring to the fetches and tri lands, I don't know, but I'm expecting to see a little more than that.

September 6, 2014 9:50 a.m.

TheGamer says... #24

I see your point abenz419. But think about the temples, pains, confluencr.

September 6, 2014 9:54 a.m.

abenz419 says... #25

That's the thing, when I read the article I wasn't sure if he was referring to this set (block) or this Standard season. The article was on Khans of Tarkir, so I'm inclined to believe they were referring to the set but, like i said, it wasn't clear. It's possible they were talking about all the stuff already available, but when I read it my first thoughts were that there would be something like the signets, (Golgari Signet for example), because we already had the tri lands and the fetches spoiled and I wasn't sure how realistic it would be for another cycle of lands to be in the set.

Lhurgyof says... #26

If they print a morph land, I feel like they'd just print Zoetic Cavern .

Dalektable says... #27

If by non-basic you mean full art basics...which aren't normal basics...then yes. Mainly because I want it to happen, and it's not completely irrational to think so as fetches are returning.
