Planeswalkers in DoT

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Posted on March 4, 2015, 4:27 a.m. by bennybubbles

First of all, I'm not completely sure if this is the right area to ask this question, but I couldn't think of where else to ask it.

There have been lots of people saying that wizards have said there will be 5 planeswalkers in the Tarkir block, leaving 2 for DoT. I was just wondering if this is true and if so, could someone link where this was posted?

Thanks.

So far, every single block since planeswalkers were printed, there have been 5 planeswalkers in each block.

lorwyn had 5 in lorwyn
shards of alara had 4 in shards, and 1 in conflux
zendikar block was 3,1,1
scars block was 3,1,1
innistrad block was 2,1,2
RTR block was 2,2,1
Theros was 3,1,1
Khans is 2 and 1 so far, so logically, there will be 2 in DTK.

Wizards spoiled the packaging for DTK on the site (source), and there are two humans on the wrappers. One is distinctly narset, whom has been speculated for a while, and hinted to have a spark. the other is unsure, but I suspect it's another Sarkhan. We won't know obviously till there's a spoiler I guess....

I believe it comes from the fact that for a while now all blocks have had 5 walkers

obviously, wizards doesn't have to stick to this rule if they don't want to (see M13 and M15), but 7 blocks in a row and 4/6 core sets seems like that's how they want planeswalkers to be printed.

the guy certainly bears a striking resemblance to the PAX pin that wizards had this year calles Sarkhan Unbroken i think. The girl is definitly wearing blue and white so would suggest she is from Ojutai, so Narset is a safe bet i thinkd

I know about the packaging, I asked it because my mates don't think Sarkhan will be a planeswalker again, but I brought up the packaging and they brushed it off, and then I said about the 5 per block thing and they asked me to confirm it, since none of them have been playing for more than 2 years and the only format most of them play is standard, they don't know many of the old cards

And so because of that, they don't know about the 5 per block thing

I don't think the 5 walkers per block is a rule, just a trend. It's pretty safe to assume that trend will continue, but it's not unthinkable that Wizards change it either.

Every Block, and every core-set, since Planeswalkers were introduced has has 5 Planeswalkers, with 2 exceptions.

M13 had 6 due to the inclusion of Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, and M15 had 6 with the inclusion of Garruk, Apex Predator. - These 2 multicolour Planeswalkers were 'special cases' due to story line.

Note: If you search on Gatherer for "Innistrad Block" and "Planeswalkers", it will result in six, due to Garruk Relentless  Flip being counted as 2)

I see no specific reason, at this point, why we should expect a greater or lower number of Planeswalkers in this Block.

Mark Rosewater has stated that with the up-coming changes in Block sizes and Standard Rotation they will continue aiming for 10 Planeswalkers per year. - Currently 5 in Core-Set, 5 in Block. - Divided over 2x 2-set blocks per year, that will still remain at 5 Planeswalkers per Block.

So, it is a "Rule"... No, but rarely is anything ever a "Rule" with Wizards. - It has, however, been stated by many people in design and development that they like the 5 per block ration, and that it has worked well for them so far.

If they do not do 5 Planeswalkers in this Block, it would likely be to, in some way, accommodate for "Magic Origins". - With the story focused on the Planeswalkers it is not impossible that they want to include more in this final core-set... though I still doubt it.

I personally think we will see Narset as a Walker in line with Ojutai's colours, and we will see the new Sarkhan although what colours he will be is a mystery, he is even uniquely positioned to be the first walker (dont thin he will be but maybe....)

I thought that we could see another Nahiri, the Lithomancer as a planeswalker, because if you look at Sorin, Solemn Visitor's history, you see he came to find Ugin, the Spirit Dragon to help containing the Eldrazis that showed up on various other planes. You also learn that he did it with Ugin and Nahiri. He foud out Ugin was dead, but Nahiri disapeared about 100 years ago. Since the went back in time in FRF, I thought it would be logical to now see a Nahiri comeback, and it would allow for a super nice story/lore and we could see the eldrazis back (YAY, more broken stuff)! If I am wrong, I at least expect this to come soon, as I would have liked it to get back some big eldrazis. Who wouldn't like to see a new eldrazi like this one?:

I know there is a community discussion but I wasn't sure how much it qualified for that since it was more a history question than speculation about new cards
