Potential of Prophetic Flamespeaker

I think it's pretty great and easily breakable. (Titan's Strength , Madcap Skills , etc.)

Thoughts?

I wasn't overly impressed with this when I first looked at it... Two-Headed Cerberus , with Trample, and a possible card advantage that lasts one turn only... Good card, but not "mythic" worthy...

Then I realized that if it gets through for the first strike damage, you get a card before the regular damage... so a pump spell, like Titan's Strength can make the second hit more powerful.

Combine with Scry, and you can set-up your top-deck cards, and create some powerful interactions.

The only real downfall is the one power... you will almost always need a pump before getting any advantage, leaving yourself open to being 2-for-1'd. Of course, this is negated completely by the card advantage if you get through even once.

Madcap Skills seems to be the best option to give it extra evasion.

Being a 1/3 means it's not supposed to be an aggressive creature, but a source of card advantage similar to Chandra, Pyromaster . If you get this guy and Chandra on the field at the same time, you could see up to 4 cards per turn with no additional mana investment. That's arguably better than any kind of card draw that blue has right now.

Ya know, aside from Sphinx's Revelation .

I think that this guy will be a staple in mono red burn decks, but he doesn't really have a place elsewhere. Maybe in white weenie with a red splash for this and some pump spells, but that's about it.

I do like the interaction that he provides wherein you can draw a pump spell to make his second hit bigger.

In a U/R deck, use it with Aqueous Form for evasion, and to set-up your top deck.

@ ThatBlueMage - For an investment of 7 mana (Chandra + Flamespeaker), you "draw" 3 cards, which is one card less than an equal investment in Sphinx's Revelation . Next turn, though, you have now seen 6 extra cards for the same 7 mana you spent the turn before. Turn after that? 9 cards.

Yes, this is assuming neither are removed, but it isn't completely outside the realm of possibility.

It would be a lot better and useful if it had 'You may play cards exiled with Prophetic Flamespeaker ' instead of it's current last sentence.

Does a creature with double strike also hit the player twice if its not blocked?

That would mean you can exile 2 cards per turn

That's correct.

Great card advantage for any red-heavy deck. One of my personal favourites to come out of Journey to Nyx so far.

I tihnk he works best in some sort of weenie and boost strategy with stuff like Titan's Strength and Madcap Skills .

Even sticking a Dragon Mantle on him might be a good idea. Spending the mana reduces your options for playing his exiled cards but it makes him much scarier for the enemy to block since you can tap out to boost him up and kill whatever they blocked with..

Another thing - note how the effect says that you may PLAY the exiled card this turn...

This means that if you happen to exile LANDS with this guy, you can put them onto the battlefield whether or not you already did so that turn. This guy can mana ramp if you have the fortune of exiling lands with him.

It could be good in W/R burn, giving players more steam to throw at their opponent

ckb41692 - unless an effect says otherwise, you can only play 1 land per turn.

The only way red can "ramp" is through rituals like Seething Song .

I dunno.. I think Chandra's Phoenix is better.. and chandra herself already does that for you and can get her phoenix back.

I don't really see it getting any play. At 3 mana, it's a bit too slow for RDW or Burn strategies. Also, it requires some sort of evasion and/or pump to be really effective, which as said above invites 2-for-1's.

Double strike and trample make for a decent "evasion" strategy already. A few pumps and it can be a house.

If you exile something with a bloodrush ability with this are you have to activate it? dont you have to discard for that

examples: Rubblebelt Maaka Ghor-Clan Rampager

meecht says... #19

Since the cards never go to your hand, they can not be discarded to activate Bloodrush.

Indeed not, I like this guy in combination with Thassa, God of the Sea . Not only are you scrying each turn to fix what he draws, you can pay IU to make him unblockable so you don't need to pitch cards to pump him, two damage and 2 card advantage is adequate.

Why not run him in green red pump ramp.

April 27, 2014 5:09 p.m.

Schuesseled says... #24

Well i don't think you need to ramp, but pumping him with bloodrush is very viable. Ghor-Clan Rampager or Wasteland Viper in your hand, your opponent is in for a shock.

April 27, 2014 5:14 p.m.

Thassa, God of the Sea 's scrying happens before you draw your card for the turn, so that doesn't really set up for Prophetic Flamespeaker , unless I am mistaken.

This dude is pretty much plays like a 2/3 trample if you don't buff him. You also get the added bonus of making weenie decks have bad blocks against him with the first-strike 1 damage, but your opponent needs a 2/3 to wall this dude, or a 3/3 to beat him. This isn't too hard to do, but whack a Dragon Mantle on this guy like demouse said, and you can just make your opponent's life a nightmare. 2 more options each turn plus a 1/3 trample double strike fire breather is pretty strong. You essentially get double fire breathing due to double strike, and you can do it every turn.

No one wants to block him when he has +1/+2 and deathtouch, and it doesn't even matter if they do.
