Profane Memento
1
Artifact

Whenever a creature card is put into an opponent's graveyard from anywhere, you gain 1 life.

"An angel's skull is left too plain by death. I made a few aesthetic modifications."
- Dominique, blood artist

At first, this look like any other Staff of the Mind Magus type of card...

After a bit of thought, and focusing on the "from anywhere", I'm thinking this may possibly be sideboard tech in Mill decks against aggro...??

Thoughts?

In standard even, there is Crypt Incursion which gains a lot more life, when you want it.

Crypt Incursion may gain you more life, but it cost 2 more than Profane Memento.

I was thinking the same thing... I like the passive ability of the Memento... T1, drop this and don't worry about it again. T2 you could be milling for 8-10, and gaining life.

It really comes down to whether this is enough life to hold off aggro, and whether or not you need to remove them from the graveyard... (does aggro generally have graveyard interactions to worry about?)

Is also black.

I'm playing this for mono blue control in the side, no doubt. Especially when everyone and their mother wants to play with Chief engineer.

I'll use it in my sideboard for my modern mill deck.

But then you're gaining life. Where does that actually leave you? Most of the time you'll still lose if you're going to lose - it will just take maybe 2 turns longer. Life gain is rarely worth it. Especially when there are better t1 plays.

The few modern Mill lists only have Hedron Crab as a T1 play... sometimes Thoughtsieze.

Having this as a T1 play, and gaining 1-2 extra turns will often make the difference of getting your opponents library down to 8-12 cards remaining or getting it to 0, and winning.

You said it yourself - Thoughtseize isn't uncommon. I wouldn't value this above that.

I would have to say it would depend on the deck you're playing against. Some decks aren't that bothered by had disruption. - For which I go back to my original statement... this could be a good sideboard option.

Ah sideboard. Perhaps. Although a T1 Thoughtseize is important to see what you're playing against and plan out the match - for some decks anyway. In game 2 it could be swapped out for this I guess....... Mill is probably a special case.
