So I just noticed this spoiler today, but Sandsteppe Mastodon looks pretty OP. And I'm not just talking standard, more EDH, considering I'm an EDH player. But Sandsteppe Mastodon and Deadeye Navigator...

I was just thinking with something like Palinchron, all creatures become infinite

The problem Steven_Fuckin_Hyde is that at some point your Mastodon will be the creature with the lowest toughness, so it's nowhere near infinite.

Yeah but its when it enters the battlefield, meaning he can target himself right? Or does the text say other creatures?
December 23, 2014 4:39 p.m.
No, the Mastodon can target itself, but the problem is if you blink it the counters will go away and you'll just be blinking the Mastodon to put 5 counters on it over and over again, without it getting any bigger.

I was thinking more of a massive team pump than an infinite thing.

It would do that VampireArmy, but again it stops once all your creatures have >5 toughness. It will make them quite large, no doubt, but there are better ways imo.

Yeah. That's true. I'm just throwing ideas around. I actually would love to build a top tier animar but that would be another thread haha

i would MUCH rather use Rune Scarred like mentioned above than the Mastodon with a recurring blinking ability like Navigator

Navigator gets pretty broken sometimes, there's definitely more intimidating things to do with it. It's not a bad Idea though especially with Animar like someone said above.

Honestly I could see people use that as a non-infinite combo and the second a creature less than toughness five comes in it'd be useful to have it bounce. But it's still not a great creature despite the ability.

They are trying to push the Abzan=+1/+1 Counters so hard, since it didnt really take off as they wanted it to. I hope this card means we will see more like it, giving the Abzan Counters stratagy the boost it needs. Its like Slivers to me, but strictly worse. It needs this boost, BAD.
December 23, 2014 6:45 p.m.
Yeah but here's the issue: they're just making the +1/+1 counters too slow or too much mana to get. I'm hoping to see cheaper bolster cards and maybe a card that makes outlast (which, if it was at instant speed, would be way better) actually worth using.

@Oww99, none of the cards in FRF are because of any reaction to KTK - the cards for FRF were finalised before Khans was released.

the abilities in this set for each clan are meant to complement their KTK versions. so expect Mardu to have some new ability related to attacking, Jeskai to have something related to casting certain types of spells perhaps (like bigger bonuses for instants and sorcs?), etc

5 new mechanics for a small set seems a bit much to me. Plus with Morph being the keystone to the entire Block, we know Morph is going to be in FRF. Plus with Hybrid mana coming back, that's 2 mechanics we know of along with Bolster. That's 3 mechanics already. I wouldn't expect another mechanic for each clan, but I would expect a few new ones.

why should Abzan get a new mechanic and none of the other clans?
December 23, 2014 11:17 p.m.
I can see Mardu having a mechanic that happens whenever target creature attacks, the mechanic for Sultai will probably be similar to dredge or flashback, the mechanic for Temur is probably going to make it easier to play big creatures, Jeskai will probably be focused on instant and sorceries being played quickly. But here's a question: will these mechanics affect dragons in any way, like Crux of Fate did?

Yay Bolster makes Bushi Tenderfoot semi decent.

I think there are usually much worse things to do with Deadeye Navigator especially at 7 mana, such as Rune-Scarred Demon
