Shrapnel Blast

At first I thought "hey a throwback card". But looking at it again I'm starting to think this might see some play (if artifacts with some red can take off, which im not so sure about) but if it does think about the possibilities

Player 1: Ok im at 11 life

Player 2: Poke for 1

P1: ok ill take it

P2: oh and here are 2 Shrapnel blast

P1: what?

P2: game 2?

Or am I delusional and it wont make any impact at all like it did before?

They have reprinted ornithopter and a few other things. It could take off. Probably needs a bit more support though. Let's see what khans brings!

I'm with ChiefBell here. I was hoping for more out of the U/R artifact theme in M15, and I'm not sure that they did that enough for a good Standard deck to form. Shrapnel Blast is a very powerful card, but it'll need more than Ornithopter and Darksteel Citadel to be printed for it to take off in my opinion.

I'd like for Khans to expand on this theme, but I'm not holding my breath.

Compare it to the other 5 damage burn spell which is at twice the cost, it's very good.

Yes but it necessitates that you two for zero yourself, and that you actually play artifacts.

Lightning Axe is the closet comparable thing in my opinion. obviously the power is there. lets think about it this way.

t1:Temple of Epiphany , Ornithopter
t2: Darksteel Citadel , Ensoul Artifact , swing for 5.t3: Darksteel Citadel , swing for another 5.
t4: Mountain , Shrapnel Blast x2 for the win.
that is actually a pretty reasonable play, too.

I was actually thinking of Lava Axe , but Lightning Axe is comparable too, in the sense that it is a 2 for 1

Not really reasonable though is it.

It depends on a good opening hand, no blockers, no killspells and the opponent sort of sitting there scratching his head while you win.

It's very possible but it's not entirely reasonable. Remember that standard is a removal and counterspell heavy format.

CommanderOfBolas - if you have 4 copies of a card in your deck you have less than a 50% chance of one appearing in your opening hand. Therefore depending on both a temple AND ornithopter is not fantastic.

That said. I like the idea of monored artifacts.

A Hammer of Purphoros can be used as a late-game mana sink to give artifacts to sac. And it's a nice slap to the face if they try to remove Scuttling Doom Engine .

well blockers shouldn't be a big deal if the artifact attacking (Ornithopter in this case) has flying. there aren't any flyers right now that come down turn 2 , so one hit is reasonable. 2 hits is possible on the play. granted, you make some good points, but my point is the idea is there, and it can be very effective.

Scuttling Doom Engine and Shrapnel Blast

Ouch

Swing with it until the opponent tries to answer to it, then 11 damage to the face.

Good but really too expensive, you want to keep mana open so you can blast in response to any shenanigans and it loses heavily to countermagic.

Even with the concoke guy out, i'd say scuttling doom engine decks are far too much of a glass cannon.

@ducttapedeckbox using the Hammer of Purphoros as a sac engine takes the main advantage of Shrapnel Blast - it's low cost - and pretty much eliminates it.

I'm not saying it's a win con, but if it's a long game and you have extra lands, it's not a bad option.

I get that. But at 3RR + Sac a land, I'd probably prefer Fated Conflagration (which also helps with topdecking at that game stage) or Lava Axe if I'm going to the dome.

(Or, now that I think about it, Lightning Strike and keep the 3/3 hasty golem.)
