Snappy

I personally hate it. And no flavor text. Opinions?

Holy shit... that's a cool promo though.

I seriously hope they don't think this will fill demand. Snapcaster could be reprinted every third set until the heat death of the universe and it would probably never drop below $20.

The art doesn't scream "Snapcaster Mage" to me, but I'm fine with this being a RPTQ promo. Plus it seems like each year we're getting high level promos for RPTQ participation, which I'm all for. Collectors don't have to be butthurt about the promo possibly lowering the price of the originals, and a highly sought after card has an alternative print run.

Egann - The goal of these type of promos is not to reduce the price, but reward players who perform well.

Snapcaster Mage is a player card and this version doesn't have the player's likeness on it? That's weird.

Epochalyptik says... #8

I'm not a fan of the artwork. It doesn't say anything about the card itself; it just seems like someone's generic OC.

@Egann: The purpose of promo cards is not to fill demand. It's to generate attention, encourage signups, and offer players another way to customize their decks.

torridus - All invitational cards after the original printing use new artwork. Something about not being able to use their likeness after the first time. See Dark Confidant and Dark Confidant

JWiley129 But Liliana of the Veil and Liliana of the Veil? Or can they just not change walker art?

JWiley129 says... #11

FAMOUSWATERMELON - Snapcaster Mage is an Invitational card, meaning it was designed by a pro player who won the Magic Invitational (now a defunct tournament). Liliana of the Veil is not and so isn't held to that same policy.

As much as I love promos, I think I'll skip this one unless the foiling looks especially amazing. :/

reminds me of the old "Bolt Snappy Bolt" people love to do with the red swirls around him as if he Teleported there and is picking up the fallen spell mid combat. I love it!

glad it's getting a half-reprint, but why that art? It is horribad! also, is it have a mythic symbol?

gnarlicide says... #17

is this a "top 8" card or a participant card?

October 18, 2015 7:50 p.m.

Promo cards do not have a rarity. They're promos with the WPN shooting star logo.

This card appears to be an attendance prize for RPTQ BFZ, but remember that you need to win an PPTQ in order to qualify for entry into a RPTQ.

Seen that it was designed by a player, I can understand the red swirls of energy. But the green mountain and just the general color combination feels very out of place.

October 18, 2015 8:01 p.m.

I like the art itself, its just when I think Snapcaster Mage I dont think of that image
If the art was used for something like a red or green creature I think it would get a better reception

October 18, 2015 8:07 p.m.

The actual card information was designed by a player, and the original art was that player's likeness. This new art doesn't have anything to do with that player, I don't think.

JWiley129 says... #22

Epochalyptik is correct. Tiago Chan designed Snapcaster Mage, Bob Maher designed Dark Confidant, Jon Finkel designed Shadowmage Infiltrator, among others. All original printings used their likeness, but all subsequent ones used new art.

I can't believe this is the art they chose for a promo Snapcaster Mage it doesn't even look very blue to me. This card looks like a 1R 1/2 with prowess

October 18, 2015 10:18 p.m.

I actually like the art. I'll gladly take it off your hands :)

Hate the art as well...

What do you think this does to a potential reprint in upcoming sets (my guess is modern masters 2017 if anything). Hurt or help the chances?

Since it's an RPTQ, this will circulate a lot of copies, similar to Griselbrand and Liliana of the Veil. It really depends on the demand, which is based on the art. I know many, like myself, would rather play the original nonfoil, than have some cheap ass art on the new M15 frame just because "it's foil." This is the most unblue art they could have chosen. I'm appalled.

October 19, 2015 10:45 a.m.

well snappy isn't really a blue card. Maro himself said it would have been red had not it been a player designed card.

The mountain in the background looks like it's from Mirage:

Mountain

...and the actual wizard looks a bit like Femeref Enchantress with the bracers and hair.

Really reminds me of Mirage block in general. I think they really missed an opportunity here to do a card based on Teferi, Kaervek, or any of the other characters from the Mirage War.
