Strixhaven Commands??

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Posted on Feb. 18, 2021, 11:02 p.m. by Omniscience_is_life

This post is going to be discussing two things. Seems easier than making two separate threads about similar things.

  1. Witherbloom Command refers to "Mana Value"--is this cmc? Would be an Interesting update of wording.

  2. Lorehold Command draws cards... kind of. Still a bad card. Seems like WotC doesn't understand that when we say WR needs card advantage, we mean good card advantage :\

What do y'all think?

According to the pre-announcement announcement, Mana Value is the new way to write out Converted Mana Cost. It's a refined definition, and quicker to type and say. I'm cool with it.

As for Lorehold - eh, it's Boros. Something had to give. Although Scroll-Gun Dwarf deserves her own card!

Can anyone see anything else?

As for actually responding to the post, Show

"Mana value" is fine. "Converted Mana cost" is clunky, and CMC isn't self-explanatory.

Aw that was sweet of you to respond to the post, it was more just to get some discourse going :3

ALSO PLEEZ SKELETONS YES THERE ARE OVER 50 OF THEM WE NEED SUPPORT

Are we going to start saying "MV" instead of "CMC"? Like "Most Valuable"?

The following is a comprehensive list of current Skeleton support cards:

Death Baron (note creature type)

This will annoy me until Skeleton tribal gets the same treatment Vampires got in Zendikar, and Dinosaurs and Pirates got in Ixalan. I may or may not have once drafted a five page single-spaced essay on the state of Skeleton tribal...

Okay, I'll stop derailing the thread.

I'm disappointed the Boros command is not a valid target for Sunforger .

You could use Lorehold Command's first and last ability together for an MV (( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)) 5 Inspiration , that's actual card advantage (if still not very good)

I definitely think that the first cards from Strixhaven are quite excellent, and I see that this set shall focus on the five enemy-colored pairs, so I hope that that means that there shall be a set that focuses on the five allied-colored pairs in the near future. I dislike that two of the five commands are sorceries, rather than instants, but I suppose that WotC presumed that those cards would be too powerful as instants. Quandrix command shall be an excellent replacement for Aether Mutation in any deck of mine that contains that card, and the alternate artwork cards are amazing; I definitely plan to get a copy of the alternate art swords to plowshares for one of my decks.

Why is WotC shortening “shuffle you library” to simply “shuffle” and replacing “converted mana cost” with “mana value?” Are they really saving that many words? Why bother, after nearly thirty years of using the previous terminology? Do they realize that they shall need to change a very large amount of cards with this?

Who the hell thought it was a good idea to give Boros (an aggressive color combination) the most expensive mana cost among all these commands. It's like a repetition of the design of Force of Rage . As a primarily red player, I'm quite disappointed.

Coward_Token says... #12

Now that you don't have to explicitly shuffle your library, any kind of shuffle is within the rules

re: the Theme Booster image: I'm disproportionally annoyed that they didn't put Quandrix between Witherbloom and Prismari for color adjacency reasons (for similar reasons, the campus map should switched Witherbloom and Quandrix)

Looking at that map, on my creature type prediction list, I'm adding Dryad to and Orc? to . Something with blue skin, red hair, tusks, and pointy ears.

Overall, this is looking like a light-hearted, upbeat set. I'm not expecting Strixhavenland to be significantly threatened, by Nicol Bolas or Phyrexian or some other big scary bad guy.

Coward_Token says... #16

I'm going to be the contrarian and say that Phyrexia's existence will at least indirectly influence the set's plot, with Kasmina, Enigmatic Mentor being on the plane as a teacher and taking an ends-justifies-the-means stance against Phyrexia. Basing this on the fact that her card calls her a mentor and makes Wizard tokens ("her abilities were made to match her character as a small tease of things to come"), plus that she is apparently "preparing for a looming conflict that dwarfs the War of the Spark".

February 20, 2021 5:53 p.m.

legendofa says... #17

Coward_Token Good points. Plus, vorinclex was in Kaldheim, so Phyrexia will probably be in the background. I'm going to still say it's going to stay in the background, and this set's not going to be much darker than Kaladesh. For the last couple of sets, Kaldheim was dark, Zendikar was light, Ikoria was moderately dark, and Eldraine was fairly light. If Kasmina shows up, I predict she's still mentoring and recruiting, and this will not be the "dwarfs the War of the Spark" conflict set.

berryjon, I really hope that LoreHold is very different from the Boros guild, because red/white very badly needs to have its identity expanded from being combat-focused.

Maybe a focus on Lightning Helix -style burn/lifegain?

Coward_Token, I would like to see an instant version of Death Grasp , in either red/white or black/white.

I do like how Witherbloom command has a non-blue mill effect, since blue has by far the largest number of milling effects, meaning that any mill effect outside of it is always greatly appreciated.

Does anyone here hope that Strixhaven will finish the cycle of dual lands that started in Battle for Zendikar (i.e., Cinder Glade , Prairie Stream , etc.)?

March 16, 2021 8:45 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #24

It's not a bad guess, seeing as it's an enemy guild set

Coward_Token, technically, they are not guilds, but I understand what you mean.

DemonDragonJ says... #27

Coward_Token, I saw that, and I am very pleased by that announcement; I obviously am hoping that the cycle that is being finished is the cycle of "battlelands/tango lands," but there are several other cycles that are incomplete, thus far, as well.

Many players were predicting that Kasmina would appear in Strixhaven, and she has, but I definitely did not predict that Liliana would appear in this set, so I shall be very interested to see what role she plays in the story, and how much her personality has changed. I only hope that, if she does redeem herself, her redemption is a gradual process, and does not happen to quickly or too easily. She is now free of her contract, but what about the Chain Veil and the Raven Man? I hope that the writers have not forgotten about those plot lines.

I also really hope that planeswalkers with static abilities do not become a regular feature, since I would prefer that they remain a rarity, as planeswalkers are already quite powerful as they are.

March 22, 2021 8:11 p.m.

legendofa says... #29

Professor Onyx? Huh. Now I'm really curious.

Liliana seems to have settled down. I kind of hope she's got some plan, preferably one that doesn't involve zombies somehow.

Coward_Token says... #30

I'm guessing this will be Lili vs Kasmina with The Royal Scions caught up in between

Looking at Kasmina, Enigma Sage , is that a in the mana cost? I think so, but the art kind of gets in the way.

Omniscience_is_life regarding Skeletons:

MaRo has stated that the creature type is problematic basically because 'China'.

It seems that depicting bare bones is a big taboo in their culture and that's why they're very hesitant to make more. Note that Zombies, Demons, Undead, Mummies etc. are ok in general, as long as the art shows no (humanoid) bones.

Hard to show a skeleton without bones :/
