It is a bit slow for most purposes but in a Bant control deck or a commander deck including Blue and Green that is a great interaction. Best possible way to use the Cornucopia IMO.

Just sharing, coz my friend and I were talking about the spoilers earlier. Without ramps / elves, etc, the earliest you can drop it is turn 3; which will produce 1 mana of any color. 1 mana. it's ok, but not too enticing. ok, what if you 'Vorel' it to double it? interesting....

BUT would you really want to play an artifact, or a 3-drop creature instead?

Also, do we have any Drain Life -like cards in Standard that requires specific color of mana to be used? otherwise, it will just be another Nykthos - prized for the volume of mana it can produce, but not the color

C'mon! let's break this card! lol

Good for EDH. Unplayable in standard. T3 play Astral Cornucopia, T4 Vorel of the Hull Clade , t5 double counters with Vorel and then die... not a winning strategy. Accelerate it 1 turn with a Elvish Mystic and it is still not appealing.

At its worst I can see it as a Darksteel Ingot without Indestructible a set back in a set with all the enchantment artifact balance like Revoke Existence or Unravel the Aether but that would hit an ingot anyways. The point of it having a weakness then is pretty much moot. So like everyone is pointing out, this is going to be good.

Rasta_Viking29: optimal order would be Vorel of the Hull Clade T3, Astral Cornucopia T4, Double the counters and tap allowing a second 3 drop. Elvish Mystic would allow T3 to be on curve with T4 9 mana. The thing is that this is still a bit slow IMO.

So Vorel is an exponential proliferator?

January 23, 2014 1:02 p.m.

Gidgetimer says... #10

yes, it reads "for each counter" so it doubles counters.

January 23, 2014 1:05 p.m.

So Vorel + New Planeswalker = Krakens...

@Three-Left-Feet Vorel of the Hull Clade can't target planeswalkers.

Read Vorel of the Hull Clade again. Artifact, creature, or land. Doesnt say planeswalker.

That's what I get for trying to think right after work, sorry fellas

Now then, you're in a casual game and you play Liquimetal Coating ...VOREL ALL THE THINGS!

This has the potential to be broken. Simic midrange?

January 23, 2014 5:32 p.m.

So you're using Astral Cornucopia and Vorel of the Hull Clade so you're likely to also use Prophet of Kruphix , Sylvan Caryatid and Mana Bloom but where do you go from here in a STD blue/green deck? I could see Astral Cornucopia doing all sorts if cool stuff in Modern right now though.

@solkanarswampking: I guess you can make a pretty big Mistcutter Hydra , but I don't think it's plausible enough for competitive standard. But you can believe I'll play it in mono green EDH all day long. Any mono color EDH for that matter, I just happen to want to build mono green right now.

If would be much better if you could produce mana of more than one color with Astral Cornucopia . Then it would be truly broken.

will a Cipher'ed Hidden Strings be able to untap it twice for mana?

tap for mana -> untap permanent -> tap for mana -> untap permanent -> tap for mana

also tagging Epochalyptik for rules clarification

January 25, 2014 7:39 a.m.

Gidgetimer says... #21

No need to tag him, there are plenty of people who know the rules just as well.

Mana abilities have the following 2 differences from normal activated abilities:

605.3a A player may activate an activated mana ability whenever he or she has priority, whenever he or she is casting a spell or activating an ability that requires a mana payment, or whenever a rule or effect asks for a mana payment, even if its in the middle of casting or resolving a spell or activating or resolving an ability.

605.3b An activated mana ability doesnt go on the stack, so it cant be targeted, countered, or other wise responded to. Rather, it resolves immediately after it is activated.

Since it is in the middle of an ability resolving and nothing is asking for a mana payment you cannot tap the Cornucopia in the middle of Hidden Strings resolving. Therefore; no, you cant untap it twice with the same Hidden Strings

daniferrito says... #22

Plus, it reads "another" target permanent, so you wouldnt even be able to target it twice.

ljs54321 says... #23

acbooster: If you're in a casual game, why not just use Gilder Bairn instead of Liquimetal Coating . It can target any permanent, and there are plenty of ways to get it tapped. You can tap Astral Cornucopia for mana, use Hidden Strings to untap it and to tap Gilder Bairn and use the mana from Cornucopia to activate Bairn and double counters.
