The color purple

I was just reading this article about how WotC thought about introducing a 6th color to the pie chart for Planar Chaos. It's an interesting read and almost makes me want to see a 6th color put into play. But at the same time their ideas seem very limited and doesn't really contribute to the game at all. They chose the color purple and they had a couple ideas for the basic land (cave or city). Does anyone here think this would be cool? A part of me thinks this is something worth exploring more but at the same time I think it might throw off the balance of the color pie.

I actually don't like this idea. Most will probably say they shouldn't change it since it's always been 5. I could care less about that argument (although it shouldn't be ignored).
Personally, I think they shouldn't change it because it would weaken the game. There's absolutely no reason to add a 6th color, especially if it just contains what all the other colors do or regurgitates old mechanics. In time, their necessity to keep it relevant could weaken all colors.
Each current color has a general, specific play-style. The ONLY way to add a 6th color would be to give it its own play-style, completely separate from what other colors have to offer. Unfortunately, this would have to include additional rules and mechanics to make it work. This would require an enormous amount of changes.

@trentfaris242 that's basically what I was thinking. They had no real original ideas on how to make it contribute to the game. It was basically blue but with direct damage and enchantment removal...which could always be added to blue with the restriction of only a card or two

Plus the color purple would have barely any support for many blocks. There would be no reason to play purple over other colors since there would be so few cards. It wouldn't be easy to splash either without fetches or shocks even if there was an amazing card in purple.

I agree. All in all, it's a bad idea. I'd rather they just print more hybrids.

@InconspicuousPotato that was another thing they considered. Sorry if you read this in the article but they thought to make booster packs 16 cards instead of 15 to add a basic land for purple to get the mana out there and then guarantee at least one purple common to get the cards out there

a lot of effort to get the cards out there lol it would be cool though if they made it for some kind of other format like conspiracy

Oh my god, that's like inventing a new number between 2 and 3. Could you even imagine what the hell would be going on?

I'd imagine that's what people thought when they first came up with the concept of 0...except that was a bit more relevant/practical lol

Maybe Wizards could create another game similar to MTG and play with 6 or 7 colors.

Lets call that number between 2 and 3 Zef @TexasDice. So 1 plus Zef would be umm... penguin?

I think it could work only as a fun secondary subtheme for one set/block only sort of like the futureshifted card frame as a one time thing.

I would love to see a temporary sixth color just for a single block and rules stating that it is only legal in block constructed. I like the idea of an alternate reality where the color has existed from the beginning but by meshing other colors into it doesn't feel natural. If they want to re-explore it then that is fine but they should figure out what it can do by itself that no other color can. It would also be cool to see new or uncommon creature types find their way into the color as well. Just thinking about it for a few min I came up with the potential purpose of the color could be to warp reality itself. They keep going on about how it is an alternate reality why not run into that head on instead of trying to figure out a way to explain why it is warped in the first place. It could turn creatures into other creatures and cause spells to have other effects. Make the color mess with your opponent's mind in a way blue could never do. I think that this would be more interesting then just saying "it was there all along", make it mean something too.

Purple could play like the one hippo commander feldergrif something-or-other, and have no intention to win but to make your opponent win faster

@TexasDice There's already an infinite amount of numbers between 2 and 3.

They could try and make a colour-combo block, like having cards that give benefits for 2 coloured decks (izzet = somehow make purple, boros = somehow make orange, etc), apart from that i dont really see how they will fit in a 6th colour and playstyle, without either making it completely obsolete, or breaking an older mechanic.

They could add another ten colours, wouldn't.really change anything.
balance between the colour pies doesn't exist.
"goyf is the best blue card"
They break their.colour pie all the time, unless they ban all the exceptions to their pie chart, it doesn't amount to much.

To be honest, snow mana (e.g. Boreal Centaur ) is actually the closest they've come to a 6th color and I think that that is the closest, Magic should get to a 6th color.
People were even speculating that the snow theme might be coming back in the Khans of Tarkir block since it seemed Mongolia inspired.

for them to make "purple" work they would create a new eternal format and then make "purple" illegal in the older formats this would mean modern vintage legacy players all miss out of this new "for the time being it's for standard only until we create modern mark 2"

I second EddCrawley's idea. I want a new un-set and full art lands!
Dalektable says... #2
I pretty much agree with all of your above sentiments. I think It sounds like a pretty cool Idea, especially since purple is my favorite color and "cave" as a basic land sounds awesome, but I think It could throw the balance of the game a bit.
