Have you seen the new borders (sorry for no link or anything...) they OUTRAGE me! If you don't like the new borders, please post here. I think they make it look more like a wannabee trading card game instead of the big-ass trading card game.

BLEATH says... #1

B..b..but I actually kinda dig the new card design. Change is good. (And so are their reasons for doing so.)

May 2, 2014 1:26 a.m.

Personally, I like the Beleren font, and I liked the old borders best.

I don't really care either way its all fine to me.

Rhinowarrior Maybe it could be called the Future? or maybe it could become the new modern and modern the new legacy and legacy the new vintage and vintage turns into I don't know Classic or Ancient?

I honestly prefer the original card frame, when 8th edition came out everybody thought the new design was ugly back then but years from now there will be people that prefer the m15 card frame over all, just like what happened to modern frames. It'll take time to adjust, but we will, I don't think the 8th edition are that bad anymore but I still prefer the original design.

Rhadamanthus says... #5

Planeswalker cards have been using something very similar to the M15 frame ever since they first showed up in Lorwyn, and everyone seems to be okay with that. It'll be fine.

mckin says... #6

  1. planeswalker frame
  2. the complaint it wont match your cards means you only play standard, so give it some time and theros will be the odd set out when Huey has this boarder.
  3. modern has shit tons of not boarder matching cards, timeshifted & old boarder judge foils, pimp your shit out!
  4. Legacy boarders already dont match.
  5. complaints are always the loudest which means if 10% of the forum complains, 90% dont think its that bad, or like it, so wizards is still in business.

i could care less, i hated 8th edition boarders and mirrodin, but now its whatever, i hated this boarder but not its whatever as i see more printed i care less, and just want spoilers

Only things I can't stand about it is, A) getting rid of flavor text and B) those sharp corners on a background of round edges, as a design major, this makes me cringe hard

May 2, 2014 11:28 a.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #8

wait when did they say there would be no more flavor text?

That is lame. :/

May 2, 2014 11:34 a.m.

gufymike says... #9

APPLE01DOJ In cards with designer credits, like Waste Not they are using the flavor text spots for that. It's not a mass removal of flavor text and the designer credit isn't something they will do often. Check amro's blog (I can't tumblr block at work) and the PAX East panel for more info.

The one major flaw in Wizards' plan to prevent counterfeiting is that all the cards that are worth counterfeiting don't have the new border. Tarmogoyf , BOB, fetch lands, original duals etc all have the regular border. The machines can still print those in large numbers with no problems.

May 2, 2014 12:15 p.m.

megawurmple says... #11

Don't know why I tried to link Dark Confidant as Bob, but yeah. That happened.

May 2, 2014 12:16 p.m.

EvenDryke says... #12

That's true, but there's not really anything they can do about that.

The idea is to protect the Tarmogoyf s and Underground Sea s of the future.

May 2, 2014 2:41 p.m.

Rhinowarrior says... #13

cards won't get that expensive ever again.

May 2, 2014 3:13 p.m.

EvenDryke says... #14

I don't know about that, if prices keep jumping every year we could see some pretty silly prices in a relatively short amount of time.

May 2, 2014 3:18 p.m.

Devonin says... #15

They look fine. They're different, but whatever. This happened last time too, and now the "horrible" ones nobody liked are the precious perfect ones that need to be protected.

May 2, 2014 3:36 p.m.

HarbingerJK says... #16

take a look at a planeswalker card, any planeswalker...it's essentially the same thing as the new border

May 2, 2014 5:31 p.m.

Mostly, the only thing I would want changed are the sharp edges near the bottom and the font, because they look like shit. The holofoil the power/toughness box change, the designer credit, the collector's info, and all that stuff are actually pretty cool. Sure, ChiefBell, it'll stop counterfeiting. Great. You do realize some people make proxy decks for fun? That's pretty sad for them. At my shop, people have binders full of proxies (not the ones that look exactly like the regular ones).

Also, how do you know so much about counterfeiting? I'm not trying to be accusatory, but it seems a bit shady...

KingSorin says... #18

I'm not a fan of the curving inwards, but this change is very minor overall and doesn't really bother me. They're also increasing the size of the art box which is good.

I really didn't like the 8th edition frames when they first came out, but got used to them. Now looking back in retrospect, the pre-8th edition frames now look kind of garish to me, funny. Anyway, the thing I like about the current 8th edition frames are that it's very clear and balanced and has an aesthetically pleasing crispness that the new frames seem to fall short of. But the only bugaboo I really don't like about these M15 frames are the black tabs on the bottom make the color frames on all non-black cards like a large inverted 'U', and this 'blackshifted' look almost gives the impression that they're B/x hybrid cards, but not quite.

Schuesseled says... #20

I'm failing to see the problem

May 2, 2014 8:49 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #21

SwaggyMcSwagglepants - Wizrds has no obligation to appease people who make proxy decks. If it is a proxy deck then there's no reason it has to be particularly faithful to the real thing. I've seen proxied power 9s that looked very similar but had fairly obvious differences if you looked closely. It's really no big deal. If you want to proxy then sure, do it but it doesn't have to look exactly like the real thing.

I know how printing presses work, along with manufacturing. It's an important aspect of the game because it helps you understand how booster packs and sorting impact play and your likelihood of pulling certain cards. It also helps you understand why counterfeits are hard to produce. It's just useful knowledge.

Ultimaodin says... #22

I for the most don't mind the new border. The only aspect that bothers me is the lack of any form of alignment to the power and toughness box. Otherwise I like it. It's not like it's the old terrible white border (that aesthetically still bothers me).

SwaggyMcSwagglepants - anybody in the print industry can pretty much tell you how it works. Also, I like the new font. A custom font is also REALLY hard to copy perfectly.Overall it sounds like your taking the whole thing way to extreme. Things change, welcome to world. The only true consistence is inconsistency.

ChiefBell says... #23

Also, I think it's wrong to say that cards won't get as expensive as Goyf and Sea again. Liliana is approaching that sort of money (and sometimes does when she spikes) and she was printed two sets ago. We just can't know for sure

May 2, 2014 9 p.m.

Now, the main thing bugging me is the corners at the bottom edge, Ultimaodin, now its really just that bottom corner edge, although the font is a little annoying. That triangular bit... its just terrible. The holofoil is pretty cool.

May 2, 2014 9:06 p.m.

Rhinowarrior says... #25

Liliana is not a current card. I am saying going forward. Wizards are too reserved. They won't make anything format warping.

May 3, 2014 12:37 a.m.

Devonin says... #26

I don't think I would characterise Goyf as "Format Warping" it is just an insanely efficient blue card.

May 3, 2014 12:42 a.m.

megawurmple says... #27

Devonin Wait a sec... Goyf is blue now? God that colour is OP.

May 3, 2014 5:25 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #28

My point was that they still regularly print cards that are absolutely insane. I referenced Liliana because it was very recent. In ravnica we have DRS who's since been banned. That guy could have got ridiculous but obviously he's not legal for modern play so that's going to dent the price.

The new borders matter because wizards absolutely will print cards that eventually go for thousands of dollars in the future. Obviously they don't come around often though.

Goyf isn't a green card at all. It fits in about any deck except for a green deck. The joke is that its blue because it has great interaction with decks that play loads of instants, sorceries, and creatures etc.

May 3, 2014 6:47 a.m.

Korombos says... #29

I miss the color-saturation of pre-modern frames. Using all that ink seemed to cause printing problems, however.

The most drastic change in my perception is the shifting up of the frame for the data block. I understand that this was done for reasons concerning the packaging process and such, but it is so clunky!

That oval at the bottom will affect beginners' perceptions of the game, too. It is way more obvious than the gold or orange rarity indicator, and will be like a "kill this first" flag.

I hope that the next time they tweak the design, it can be in a more elegant way.

Could the holofoil stamp be an attempt by Wizards to curtail forgeries?

May 4, 2014 10:38 p.m.

I think the "designed by the Magic company" credit is incredibly stupid & unnecessary, and I agree with Swaggy that they could just make the rarity symbol watermarked or whatever.. The rest of it seems pretty minimal to me..

Ohthenoises says... #34

Metroid_Hybrid It says "community" not "company". Waste Not is the latest community card.

All the same to me. It was a big hit when they changed way back, but then I got over it.
