not sure if any of you saw this, but i think it could potentially lead to a clue as to what athreos does and how much he costs.

1.open the enclosed article

2.scroll to the first decklist

3.notice it includes athreos even though it isnt linked

4.brainstorm possibilities for what effect and mana cost you would put into that deck, noting that it was created by someone who does magic for a living.

Actually I was wondering about that. Too little information to really make a leap of what it could be. That being said, he has a full set in the deck... a full set of a legendary creature. That seems either extreamly telling to the over all strategy, or its a red herring.

Or it's an incredibly good win condition. Very rarely do you want to run 4 of a Legendary creature.

Likely that Athreos gains life and is 4 cmc, because there are only 2 other 4 drops in Gavin's deck. Probably something like:

Athreos, God of Passage 2WB

Legendary Enchantment Creature-God

Indestructible

As long as your devotion to white and black is less than seven, Athreos isn't a creature.

Whenever an enchantment or creature is put into a graveyard, each opponent loses one life and you gain that much life.

I think there are two big clues as to what he might do

  1. it's an aggro deck

  2. many of the other cards including the color-sharing coinsmith have drain effects

by this logic, I think that he might be the curve topper at five(no other five drops, but fours, threes, ones, and crap loads of twos) and that his effect, much like Obzedat, Ghost Council will be to drain your opponent whenever something happens (maybe when a creature dies) which is something both very orzhov-y but also very like the lore about athreos and him/it being the ferryman of the dead. Maybe 'whenever a creature enters the graveyard from play put a 1/1 zombie enchantment creature token onto the battlefield and gain 1 life' ?

Though that'd be really quite powerful.

DarkHero yeah but we only know the name, art, and color identity. Nothing about the power/toughness or any of the abilities. On a side note, it would be hilarious if they made a colorless God with no abilities and no power or toughness, just this card never leaves the battlefield under any condition.

I have a theory that Athreos is EITHER going to do some sort of Reanimate shenanigans or do something when a creature dies. It's got to be one or the other, but I have no idea which.

I'd love for him to have some kind of Debtors' Knell Effect:

Athreos, God of Passage 2WB

Legendary Enchantment Creature-God

Indestructible

As long as your devotion to white and black is less than seven, Athreos isn't a creature.

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may return a creature at random from your graveyard to the battlefield. It is an enchantment in addition to it's other types.

4/7

Then again, life drain is fun:

"Whenever a creature is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you may gain 1 life.

Whenever you gain life, you may pay WB. If you do, each opponent loses that much life."
