Theory about Theros

So as I said in the spoiler section I feel as though the reason WOTC keeps printing really good stuff at really high CMC in theros is that they want to cater the whole freakin block to commander. Is it that unreasonable? I mean with the plethora of legendary creatures rivaled only by the Kamigawa block it really seems there will be only good reprints and planeswalkers for us people in modern unless one of the gods somehow fits into the style of deck your playing. Anyone else see that patten? Should I put down the tin foil hat?

If every block kept printing powerful cards, then we would have power creep and bad things would happen. Like Black Lotus being underpowered. Don't mistake high CMC with WOtC catering to Theros. Some cards just aren't made for you, it's something that everyone has to live with.

I don't necessarily agree. The legendary permanent count is more a result of the block's theme than anything else. Mythology-based sets are likely to have more legendary cards so they can more appropriately represent all of the gods and other significant figures.

Commander is also not a primary concern for the design team. Set design is largely oriented around Limited, and it takes into account the possible effects on Standard as well as Modern and Legacy. Commander, which isn't even run by WOTC, may also get a nod, but I don't think that it would influence set design as heavily as you seem to be implying.

Some cards are designed more for limited play than constructed, and a lot of the higher CMC cards are game winning bombs in limited.
